verticalzero Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 This helps temp get rid of the "Red Ring Of Death" error which occurs on the 360 when they over-heat or parts fail: Hope it works for everyone. texashorns82492 Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 I don't think letting it cool for a half hour will put all the fried parts back together
odene497 Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 Ours is inside a cabinet type thing, and for a while we had no idea what was going on, it would get so hot and the whole inside of the cabinet was burning hot. But I guess it was just because it was closed up inside, we now keep the doors open and it's fine.
texashorns82492 Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 My brother just keeps his out right by the TV. No problems.
Carnage Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 Don't bother with the towel trick. If you get the red rings of death, just send the console back to MS to be replaced. I just got mine back the other day. Sure it sucks to be without a system for a month, but at least you should get a working one back.
man Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 dont do the towel trick all it does is temporarley repair it and also screws it up more and more every time you do it so after a while it will only start the splash screen and get like 2 seconds through it
Vekoma Fan Boy Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 For stupid people who dont own 360's like me, what are the Red Rings of Death? And how the hell does cooking your console fix it?
IceDragon Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 For stupid people who dont own 360's like me, what are the Red Rings of Death? And how the hell does cooking your console fix it? I don't have one either, but it's when the console overheats or something... Putting towels around it will only fry the circuitry even faster... They got a new one to replace the old one.
Real Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 I have one of those aftermarket coolers attached to the back and Ive never had this problem. Mine was also a floor model for a store which Im sure got quite a bit of continued use. I also have mine sitting in a cherry wood cabinet so the air flow is ok but not great. I really think these coolers work which is just accelerating the airflow using two, loud, but fast fans to circulate the air. Other than the fact that the connection for the power cord doesnt lock in, its worth the 20 bucks or so if it extends the life of my box. Worst red lights Ive had was because I didnt fully attach my HD when I put it back on from a friends house.
verticalzero Posted August 13, 2007 Author Posted August 13, 2007 I only posted this just to make everyone aware, some people try this when they get the RROD appear on their console and it fixes their machine for a few months. Does it really take a whole month for Microsoft to send back another 360, I would not be happy with that. What about your game saves and things on the HDD..? Hope everyone makes a back-up of their stuff before sending it away. I'll only buy a 360 when the price has come down, in the UK the machine costs £217 pre-owned and £279 for a new one with a HDD. I would buy this fan to help cool the 360: Xbox 360 Glow Stand with Fan.. --------------------------------------------- I have a PS3 and I bought a USB Cooling Fan & Stand by Powerplay, this sits ontop of the PS3 and has 3 fans to blow cool air into the machine, you can feel the air coming out of the side vents. I'll post some pic's of the fans later today PS3 stand and fan Xbox 360 fan and stand How the fan and stand looks when on the PS3

Also the towel trick just gets the dust out or something which makes it work for a few seconds but really kills it. You might as well send it into MS and get it repaired.

You then send the console back to MS in that box, 10-14 business days you get a refurb console. You don't send the hard drive with the console itself, so your game saves remain inact. The flaw in the 360 is related to the clamp that holds the heat sink onto the CPU and GPU. That clamp fails, which pops the heat sinks off, thus killing the console. No amount of cooling is going to get the console to work at that point.
verticalzero Posted August 15, 2007 Author Posted August 15, 2007 I've posted some pic's on page 1 of some "fans" which you can buy for your 360 and PS3 in order to try to keep them cool for long periods. If I bought a 360 today, I would stick a 12" desk fan near the machine vents. I'll play the games with headphones.
