The parks that you can get to quite easily via train/bus around Tokyo that I would reccomend are:

Tokyo Disney Resort

Yomiuriland

Toshimaen

La Qua (Tokyo Dome City)

Tobu Zoo

Tokyo Summerland

Sega Joypolis (fun little nighttime spot!)

There are a few other smaller parks, but with nothing really significant.

You can check out our Japan trip here, and please be sure to check the travel guide for some help getting around the parks in Tokyo: http://www.themeparkreview.com/japan2004/japan.htm

BTW, I personally think Tokyo Disneyland is the best of all the Magic Kingdoms. Even if you've done WDW, and it IS similar to that one (it's nothing like Disneyland) I'd reccomend it, at leat for a day.

Well, Robb beat me to this one!

Unless you are a carousel fan, I really can't recommend Toshimaen. All of the rides there are off-the-shelf except for the old TOGO coaster. The carousel there, however is amazing! It's from the late 1800's and was made in Germany. It has three rings, each travelling at different speeds. The two outer rings have jumpers and more, while the inner ring is like a large, old, victorian era divan and spins at an insane speed.

Hanayashiki is smaller, closer to downtown and has a more eclectic ride collection. It also has an even older TOGO (Japan's first coaster) that's actually a bit better. Plus, that park is about 2 minutes walk from Senso-ji, the largest temple in Tokyo.

Between Elissa and myself, we can give you all the info you need on getting around as well as the parks themselves.

^ See I really liked Toshimaen. Not sure why or what it was about the place, but there was a certain quirkyness about it that I really liked! And also the trip to the Toys R Us right next door was a blast! I wish it was warmer when we were there so we could have tried out the water park. And they had McDonalds, so that was a plus!

Hey, don't forget about me! I wrote the entire "Japan Trip Planning Guide!!!" (With Elissa's help of course!)

That's funny. I find Toshimaen souless. Maybe it's that they named EVERY ride in the park with the generic catalog name? (Except Cyclone, which isn't even a Cyclone clone!)

I've been three times, and I have yet to find a redeeming feature of that park. Yes, there's the Toys r Us, but that's not really a part of the park, as it is outside the gate.

The Japanese coaster guide is indeed awe inspiring in it's completeness.

While we are on the subject of Japan, Robb, I bought you Japanese curry! I'll mail it to you Monday.

I really liked Toshimaen too. Ok, they are lacking a couple of coasters, but as a fan of Schwarzkopf, I of course loved the Shuttleloop (in fact it's the best Schwarzkopf shuttleloop I have tried and then it even has a water-effect during launch). Plus the waterpark was Awesome - well worth half a day in itself.
