NEWS: Volcano a death machine

Recommended Posts

The coaster has 2 launch systems. My guess is that it launched from the one right out side of the station (one pictured in other posts) traveled around a banked curve over ground traveled back into volcano to next launch. The launch failed or didnt give complete power, the train started to go up the mountain slowed then rolled back hitting first set of brakes too fast brakes broke apart causing debris. Second set of brakes engaged and worked leaving them out side of moutain which is im guessing 15-20 feet off ground (not sure never really paid attention cause its going too fast). Why the PR said remained upright im sure is because of the banked curve that they did not go all the way back to. I have season passes so ill try to go and take pictures sometime soon. Maybe it will be open and ill try to take a video.

You can't really see the back of the ride where the second launch is (where the incident occured) from anywhere in the park. There used to be a slightly better view, but now with a huge privacy fence in front of the area leading to Flight of Fear (where the big arch sign used to be), you can't even see the side of the mountain. I was there last Friday and the ride operator at the entrance of Volcano was telling people it would be down for at least a week. We even tried to look from Anaconda's lift, but still couldn't see anything. They had the immediate area in front of Volcano blocked off too (lagoon area, gift shop, etc) so we couldn't get a close shot of the station or 1st launch area either. Hopefully they'll get everything fixed and running soon.

It had a malfunction, 2 trains were damaged (fins & chasis), they are fixing them, supposed to open soon. I really would not expect to see a press release about it or anything. It is just one of those things that happens with mechanical devices and happens alot more than the press even knows about.

Article here says it was reopened yesterday at 1pm

timesdispatch

A broken bolt was what caused a roller coaster to stall on its tracks on June 23, Paramount's Kings Dominion a park spokeswoman said yesterday.

Park officials reopened the Volcano ride yesterday at 1 p.m. for the first time since the incident.

The ride had remained closed while park maintenance workers and Hanover County's assistant chief building official, Brian Gentilini, investigated and repaired the roller coaster, said park spokeswoman Susie Storey.

Gentilini, who also represents Volcano's maker - Intamin AG of Zurich, Switzerland - visited the park again Saturday night for a final assessment of the ride and OK'd its reopening, Storey said.

Gentilini could not be reached for comment yesterday.

Storey said the broken track bolt caused one of the coaster's cars to brake, stranding passengers 12 feet above ground for two hours.

One rider, a Utah man whose identity was not released, was hospitalized at VCU Medical Center and released on June 28. Park officials said he was treated for a cut above his eye.

Park officials shut down the ride and isolated the damaged bolt as the cause of the malfunction, Storey said.

"There was nothing wrong with the ride itself," she said. "We tested and retested it. It's one of those unexpected things that just happen."

She said the park's rides undergo annual inspection and certification by the county's building inspector's office, as well as daily, weekly and monthly checkups by park staff members.

"All rides have multiple layers of safety systems," Storey said. "For Volcano, we're going to keep an eye on the replacement schedule on all the bolts, just to help prevent anything in the future."

Yesterday, parkgoers lined up for a trip around Volcano, causing at least a 90-minute wait throughout the afternoon, Storey said.

Volcano has drawn more than 5 million riders since it opened in 1998, Storey said.
