Alton Towers Discussion Thread
Ultimate replied to Ed's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
The break run and lift hill in the middle actually act as a block section - without it, the dueling effect wouldn't be possible and also capacity would be seriously effected. And there is no way it could make 14 inversions with just one lift. Of course the ride would have been better without it, but it really is mandatory for what they are trying to do. And I'm sure if a launch was feasible, they would have done one. But I highly doubt it could have worked in the area they had. -
SUPRISE! It's a ROLLER COASTER!
Ultimate replied to GrapesLie's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I suspect someone simply didn't want it so they dumped it there That would explain why the train isn't present (sold for parts) or other mechanical parts. I attempted to find one like it on RCDB but I can't. It's a larger ride than most of these oval kiddie coasters. This is a cool document, however it doesn't help much here. http://www.personal.psu.edu/faculty/v/a/vac3/kiddie.html -

Is there a reason why this is the FOURTH ride to be painted white with green supports? -

I'm so excited now! Here's hoping this is final confirmation that it will be open for my school trip on the 24th! And if it turns out to be crap, I'll still have a great time photographing this wacky ride -

This must be the best entrance to a park ever! I'll admit, I thought the gaps and that weird support at the back would ruin it, but you don't notice them at all -

How does Boomerang not count? I've been reading this thread for a while, and your continuous negativity is simply tedious. A Boomerang is a roller coaster. With inversions. That goes backwards. That alone is exciting enough for me. Yes, some people say they are rough and/or uncomfortable, but it's a new attraction for your park that many, many people will enjoy and remember. If you like Boomerangs (and I know people that do), be glad that your park has one. If you don't, remember that it's an effective attraction on the cheap, that surely shows the park is due a large investment in the not-to-distant future. Just wanted to add my opinion -

Did this actually happen? I've never been sure if this is a true story or just a running joke, can you help me out? -
Lazy Engineering?

I wouldn't say Arrow were lazy as such, they just didn't have the design software that modern rides take for granted. I'm pretty sure Arrow coasters were drawn up on paper and g-force calculations were made, but I'm sure they didn't quite know how it was going to ride until testing day. As for Ultimate (a great ride, hence my user name), the people designing it had never built a roller coaster before. It cost only £5,000,000 (and was originally budgeted for £1,000,000!), so those numbers probably speak for themselves as to why they didn't hire someone like Arrow or Dinn to do it. There's a rather interesting article on it if you want to read more: http://www.rollercoaster.wikia.com/wiki/Ultimate/ About momentum calculations, I think you're looking at a block brake. Ultimate was at one point going to run four trains. Now, they usually put out the next train when the other one has past that block, so it would probably be necessary if a train valleyed in the valley -

Maybe they realized what happened with Thirteen and decided to keep the world first simple this time. And so far, I think they've pulled it off. -
Roughest element on a roller coaster
Ultimate replied to MNCoasterlover's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
A very similar topic already exists: http://themeparkreview.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=65017&hilit=worst+coaster+element&start=0 You should probably just reply to that one. -

I think these cars look great! A reason as to why use OTSR's is that the general public often feels unsafe in them (Show a photograph of Iron Shark to your friends and family and you'll see what I mean). I've heard this is also the reason why Merlin don't buy their parks wooden roller coasters. -

I think this is the difference: Flat Spin = Entered with no banking Corkscrew = Entered with banking -

Eejanaika dosn't even invert it's riders 14 times. I only counted about five inversions when I watched the POV. -

I doubt they would be large enough for any practical use. I'm surprised they arn't solid concrete. Are they made out of steel, or plastic?
