  1. There are still permanent magnets there that will induce eddy currents in the brake fins, slowing the cars down. I believe that when the brakes are "off", they work like LIM motors to "push" the train along the brake run at a constant speed. This is what I gather from the Velocity Brakes website. It's a bit like how iSpeed and Maverick's motors double as safety brakes. When not being used to propel the car they act as brakes.
  2. What he is saying, is it takes input to turn off the brakes. They are always on unless something inputs the energy to turn them off. That way if there is a power failure the brakes will be in an Off position and the train will stop.
  3. Because these trains are still similar to those that ran on wood coasters in the past and Gerstlauer doesn't have a great record there. I prefer to wait and judge the cars on how they run and not how they look Um they have polyurethane wheels that are made for the track. They will feel just about the same as riding every other STEEL coaster in the world. The trains cant make the ride rough. And you know this from experience?
  4. Those wheels look pretty big, I don't think they are gonna fit between the bolts on the track...
  5. Off topic but pretty cool I think, have you guys seen this video of Xcelerator overspeed testing? I remember watching one on the late ACN years ago, which also showed Sandor Kernacs test riding the ride. This one has several clips of the ride doing 100+ mph: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhGFEI0juf4&feature=related I wouldn't want to be on that ride when its going that fast...but the launch must be insane! And yea, I never rode Ghostrider in it's prime. Last time I rode it (a few years ago) I came off it with a bloody nose....so yea. Not one of my favorites.
  6. My only actual "breakdown" was on Millennium Force. The train stopped about 20ft from the crest of the lift, so we sat there in the hot sun at 290ft in the air for about 20 minutes before they finally let the train advance. Great ride though, and we got to go on Maverick line-free on a day when the line was about 3 hours
  7. Mine is available on the Nolimits Exchange Thanks for hosting this challenge, AJ! Pretty stoked that I won. I'm posting another coaster on the aforementioned website in a few minutes if you guys want to check it out. It's another woodie with a more classic feel to it, all designed in Newton using constant radii instead of specifying forces. I'm sure that using the HSAK and AHG would be a better choice but I don't have the tools anymore and wanted to see if I could do it in Newton. I'll be uploading it with the name "Yeti".
  8. I'm a little curious as to why there are so many gaps in the track. Just fuck ups from the RMC guys or is it due to the wood structure shifting?
  9. Ever ridden Maverick? It kicks the ass of any B&M I've ever ridden, roll or no roll. I admire that B&M has never made a mistake, but you really can't compare that to an innovative company like Intamin. If you actually come out with something new, ie, more than just a new kind of train, there are bound to be issues. And I've yet to ride an Intamin that is "silly and pointless", but those words are exactly what I would use to describe Silver Bullet. Talk about a ride with serious potential but is ruined by forcelessness and lack of any thrills whatsoever. Kinda says a lot when the Intamin a few hundred yards away from it is just a tophat and a few turns, yet its the best ride in the park. Those inversions have all been done before, all they are doing is swapping trains. If B&M manage to overcome the roughness that plagues ALL other "wing" type trains (X2, Furius Baco, Eejanaika, etc) I will be impressed. And it wouldn't surprise me if they could do it. Just look at how they improved on the Flyer concept.
  10. Hey, I submitted my design a few days ago, can you confirm that you got it successfully?
  11. How do you plan on supporting the seats? The connection between them and the cars looks pretty weak in your diagram. Personally, I would put the seats closer to the car, so that there is less force placed on the axle the seats spin on.
  12. [sarcasm]After seeing that POV it is very obvious that this ride will suck [/sarcasm]
  13. I can't see how they would do a pull-through, and it seems pretty unnecessary for this coaster. I'd think that the "windows" on the train would prevent people from putting their arms out sideways.
  14. This, exactly. Obviously when I said cookie cutter I didn't mean it's a clone...that would be stupid. Clones aren't all bad either...I'd ride Scream and B:TR before Silver Bullet and Hydra any day of the week. I'm not bashing B&M at all, hell, Tatsu is one of my favorite rides hands down. It's also creative, forceful, and uses the terrain extremely well. This ride on the other hand looks completely forceless and floaty, and it wouldn't surprise me at all if it turned out that way. B&M is probably playing it safe with this one to test out the train design. Because thats what B&M does: plays it safe until another company does it right, then learn from their mistakes.
  15. Have you ever ridden X2? I'd say the did a pretty damn good job. Just saying, I don't know why this is being classified as a "prototype" when multiple companies have made versions of it since 2002
