ACE sent cease and desist letters to members who publicly dared to suggest that the wife beating meth head human trafficker who built and operated a slide that injured many and decapitated a kid might be a less than great person. Not even joking. Given that ACE relocated to Texas I'm sure they consider it important to keep up the relationship of doing events in return for free PR. I've never been and am interested to go now with the hope that nothing is changed too significantly from the older concrete attractions. I can ride Proslide and Whitewater West stuff anywhere these days, so I don't so much care about that. Any product they make that's not crap will have 100 iterations in no time.

Schlitterbahn KC isn't even in the same state as Worlds of Fun and WOF's lodging options are basically 30 themed trailers; no rational reason to try and build a sports park to extend visits. I would guess they'd be more interested in possibly selling off the land and eliminating a competitor assuming there's a deal to be struck over the debt it holds (which is sizeable) and then dispersing the water slides across the chain.

Lake Compounce Discussion Thread
DirkFunk replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Kennywood sold out because the family didn't want to run it and this Spanish firm had a bunch of money fronted to it by european banks. Now they're loaded with debt and are having a difficult time servicing it, leading to nothing but hideous choices by people who clearly have no idea what they're doing. Lake Compounce sucks now. I was 10 minutes away from it this past Memorial Day weekend and felt there's no reason for me to have gone. I'm not going to wait an hour for Boulder Dash because they aren't competent enough to run two trains and can't find maintenance staff or aren't given money to buy OEM parts like everyone else (including SeaWorld, who is in even worse financial shape). -
Rye Playland Discussion Thread
DirkFunk replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
The saga continues because there's a significant number of people with money who don't want Rye to exist. If Standard doesn't believe they breached the terms of the contract, then why shouldn't they sue to prevent a unilateral attempt by a politician to do enormous financial damage to them? -

Well, they love the playscape. Different park, different audience. -

Step 1: Forbidden Frontier Step 2: ??? Step 3: PROFIT Literally the case, except the playscape is like 1/10th of the project budget. But look, people are willing to cut some parks slack for anything they do, whether it was Dinosaurs Alive or Starlight Spectacular or this. -
Cedar Point (CP) Discussion Thread
DirkFunk replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
If they only spent $60K on this thing then they're getting screwed on coasters. The support structure for this playscape is insanely robust. I mean, if you saw the supports on a truck bed heading into the park you'd assume a new B&M was on the way. Whatever it is that it cost, they bought a playscape. That's what it is. Well, they want to bring in people or at the very least get longer stays, which seems counterintuitive to building an attraction that no one knows how to market. The park already has plenty of challenges with having to assemble a work force; not sure how creating an attraction that is all people helps that out. -
Cedar Point (CP) Discussion Thread
DirkFunk replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Gemini rules and it going away would be a travesty. They aren't going to replace it with anything that has more capacity and if they build something less wild than SV at this point people will complain (though invariably they have to). How have crowds been this year, especially Memorial Day and after? Soft? Busy? I still 100% don't buy that their new for 2019 attraction they aren't sure how to market was a good move and am totally looking for confirmation of my bias against it. Good to hear though that the $50-60K they spent on a playscape is getting usage when their personnel costs for the actors will be multiples of that. -
That's not the replacement for Air Race. Super Air Race is the replacement for Air Race. There's a picture of it on Antonio Zamperla Spa from 5/6: it's already been packed and is headed to NY. There's still all the stuff going in with the log flume too. They're putting in serious work there. I wonder if it has anything to do with Legoland?

Kings Island (KI) Discussion Thread
DirkFunk replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
This is so silly of an argument. Cedar Fair already has two other parks with paired B&M coasters of 200/300 ft with a clear history of success in drawing guests. There's no reason to assume that the people going to Kings Island are going to be concerned with this because they're extra smart. I mean, if that was true, why are they living in Dayton/Cinci/Northern Kentucky to begin with? I kid, I kid. (Maybe.) Also: Yeah, it isn't going to be as intense as I305. I'm gonna go on record and say that's a conscious decision from everyone in part because I305 isn't a popular attraction with the general public and doesn't even have universal appeal among enthusiasts. -
Canada's Wonderland Discussion Thread
DirkFunk replied to BDG's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
The way the 407 works is that you get billed by mail afterwards. There's an agreement in place to pull your plate number and get your home address that way with states. It's not cheap (driving from the start to CW is probably like $15/20 CAD) but there's also almost never traffic. It's actually a super Singaporean way to do things. -
Help with Canadian coaster trip.
DirkFunk replied to thrillrider's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Oh s#it, it's thrillrider. You're gonna drive from Winnipeg to Vancouver overnight, aren't you? Wait, this isn't suicidal. Are you OK? What's your body temperature? Might as well do Fantasy Island and the wood coaster there while you're at it. It's good at Indiana Beach, FWIW. I'll echo the sentiment about Centreville being cool and also maybe you could stop at the CN Tower while you're downtown? Honestly? Skip it. Either go visit Ottawa and see a museum or see stuff in Montreal. Get there at opening. Go directly to the Wild Mouse themed to bobsleds. Then Le Monstre, the corkscrew (Super Manege), Boomerang, then Dragon. That order SPECIFICALLY. If Le Monstre is closed, do either of the crappy steel coasters first that are close to one another and maybe it'll open in the meantime. After Dragon, do Ednor and then Goliath and you're basically done. If - and this is a big if - everything opens close to on time, you can be done with every coaster in 3-4 hours. I cannot make promises here. The flat rides are just like the other ones Six Flags has and nothing is run specifically well. The kebab place in the back of the park by Goliath is pretty good. I would recommend, if possible, making the whole day here in Lake George (along with Great Escape). Lots of cool old mini golf. Lots of arcades. Rando kiddie park with the old Magic Forest. Boat trips. It's very nice! Sure. Yes, but at La Ronde you have to do something something. It used to be getting slips at Guest Services, now I have no idea. You should be prepared to go there at some point in your day. A little, but it's Quebec. French is the official language. Expect everything to be in French first, English second. People mentioned Marineland and I'd suggest you do Fantasy Island instead. The big coaster is better. Maybe not as weird, but better. On the upside, Marineland's owner is dead, so either it'll close soon or improve. One of the two. I had a great time last year. I don't know how. I may be the only person who ever has. Western NY tends to be pricey. I had good luck with the Lockport Inn and Suites and it is still 4 1/2 circle rated on Tripadvisor. -
Cedar Point (CP) Discussion Thread
DirkFunk replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I would usually ride it in the first hour if it was open and I was down that way simply because it wouldn't have a long line. Why would I wait more than 15 minutes for Wicked Twister? "DERP! DONTCHA SEE THATS WHY IT ISNT OPEN NOW?" Yes, imaginary heckler, you're right, rides when a park first opens have shorter lines due to the fact that it was closed before it opened and had no guests. That in turn is why everyone on here is always advised if they are planning to go to a park to go at opening. Wicked Twister probably costs a bunch of money to launch half full trains, so they think by not running it in the first hour, they can save a few thousand dollars a year in personnel, maintenance, and elecrical costs. I guess I can go jerk off in a bathroom stall while I wait for Melt to open at 11AM instead of riding anything once the gates open and guests are let loose. -

OK, at least two of these haven't opened with the park in...years? Yeah, this is super cost cutty. Why not open half of it? I know it needs a lot of people... Really? lololololol Windseeker has turned out to be quite the ironic name, no? -

I'm really excited right now for that new for 2024 attraction at Kennywood, Steel Curtain. -
It's never going anywhere and it's never going to get better. WYSIWYG. Timbers is about as good as it's gonna ever be now with the trick track removed and the helix trimmed to the point that it does little but kill more time for the crew to circle jerk in the station before they officially stack trains. I've made my peace with it. You can go do so many other rad things in that part of the world - or even just go on a suicide run across Michigan to the northern parks like Arzo's and Cedar Valley (the latter of which is much more charming than MiAdv) - that I would never tell people to not go. In fact, people should go. They should see what total mediocrity resembles so that they don't confuse something actually good with it.
-
Right, they'd need to invest in transfer track and another train. And probably pay people more than dirt nothing wage (or just openly appeal to ex-felons) to get enough people on the platform to make it worth their while. Fred's experience is pretty much par for course for me over the last decade. I've not seen another Cedar Fair park let operators leave the booth while the ride was on to check lapbars by themselves, but at Michigan's Adventure, all things are apparently possible.
-
So is CP. And you won't find me there until June this year because of that. I'm pretty hard on CP for their poor staffing and actively tell people not to go opening weekend around htere. I count 22 (Dry side), three of which are coasters. (According to the website) I took a look - wasn't 22 (adults can't fit on Hampton Motorcycles) but it was higher than I expected given Cedar Fair's usually militant attitude on height restrictions. Cedar Point's actually managed to put in edible things (burritos, mac and cheese, cheese on a stick, the Dragon's Inn provalone sticks). Same with Kings Island and definitely true with Canada's Wonderland. Mchigan's Adventure, we agree, isn't in league with them as a facility. It's in league with Adventureland in Iowa or Kentucky Kingdom. Those parks are way better than Michigan's Adventure food wise even if they're totally midpack. Darien Lake has a full service restaurant. Michigan's Adventure has a busted ass Coasters. Knoebels exists in this world; Michigan's Adventure buys a propane grill from Home Depot and slaps it into the beer garden so the person working register can make hot dogs to order (if you have 45 minute to kill). It's bad. Pointing out other bad things doesn't make Michigan's Adventure less bad. It just further highlights that Cedar Point rents out space to food trucks (that have great food) while Michigan's Adventure...doesn't. The Corkscrew station was a meme before memes existed. I'm not joking either. "SAVE THE STATION". You want to know who has live entertainment? Coney Island Cincinnati. Idlewild. Lake Compounce has multiple show venues. Donley's Wild West Town has live entertainment, for god sakes. That park is for sale in a catalog for $7 million. "Cluttered with trees" is a little strong. Kiddieland and the area around Wolverine Wildcat is still concrete paradise. It isn't even just that the park isn't "good": it isn't even very interesting. It is only interesting to me in so much as it maximizes bad design aesthetic and unimaginative ride selection. It's less of a functioning fun park and more of a case study in how mediocre you can make a product in this industry and still draw a crowd when you have demographics and a lack of competition.

No, it sucks because it sucks. As a kids park it blows because it's poorly staffed and they have like, what, three rides that adults and children under 48" can ride together (two of which are coasters)? As a thrill park it sucks because the coaster are, with the notable exception of one, garbage. As a water park, what have they gotten new in the last 7-8 years, some used kiddie slides from Geauga? The food sucks. The buildings are all cinder block construction with (maybe) some paint on them as decoration. The food sucks. The arcade games are perpetually broken. I can't tell you the shows suck because there aren't any. There's not even a stage to do one with. The food SUCKS. There's no lights so the park can never run at night. It took 20 years for the trees to grow back after they were all knocked down in a tornado, during which time they never bothered to open any indoor venues or put up any shade structures. My wife will not go to Michigan's Adventure. She has traversed the world, seen the good and the bad and everything in between, and she will not even bother to go in spite of it being a) the closest park to us b) literally free to enter and park. She will deny that it is her home park to anyone that asks. The number of major parks I wouldn't trade Michigan's Adventure for can be counted on one hand. Darien Lake? Absolutely, you can have Timbers. Six Flags America? In a heart beat! Valleyfair? Unfair; You guys have more than 2-3 things I want to reride. It's in the dregs next to Magic Springs and Elitch Gardens; parks that have exceptional likelihood to be closed and parted out.
-
Mad Mouse is indeed the first thing to do, followed by Wolverine Wildcat. I'd just knock out Timbers after them, then move to doing the other two adult coasters (Corkscrew and Timberhawk) before heading back to the junior rides. Ultimately, it's a rush to do everything that isn't Shivering Timbers so that you can reride Shivering Timbers. The rest of the park is crap. Anything "cheap" there is going to be garbage because it's peak season on the Lake Michigan Shore. You can go do luge at Muskegon State Park 10 minutes away, hit the beach, do the dune rides, go have amazing beer, et al instead of spending time at Michigan's Adventure, the most soulless amusement park in North America. But I don't control your decision making.
