  1. Do "we" know yet if this is going to be a "tracked" ride or if it is going to be some sort of film? I know that the robo-arm is supposedly going to be a component, but other than that...
  2. ^^^Now that you say that...I see it. Funny thing that I noticed is that in the two VERY quick views of the ride operators- they didn't look like carnies, AND they were wearing uniforms! The ones in the 2nd video looked as though they could be Six Flags ride ops- which granted isn't saying much
  3. Man, I think I may have mentioned this on TPR before, but I still remember going to Canada's Wonderland the year their rapids ride opened. It was such a huge deal back then that it was the "run to" ride when the park opened in the morning. My family joined in on the run- and good thing too as it had a 90 minute wait already when we got off! If you ever happen to go to Canada's Wonderland- take note of the loooong pathway leading to the station from the midway and then imagine it completely full with the line wrapping around and continuing down the pathway. When I was dating a Canadian back in 2004 and had a Season Pass I don't think I ever saw more than a 15 minute wait!
  4. ^^^^The Coney Island Cyclone has a steel support structure too...and that's almost 83 years old. Again its the track style, not the support structure that determines the type.
  5. CP was classifying Gemini as a wood coaster at times well into the 1990's. They stopped round the time that the internet had its first big burst. Information = power I guess (or something like that). Even if this is going to be a steel coaster, it is not going to be a "tubular rail" coaster as probably like 95% of steel coasters are. Maybe we need to start classifying by rail shape? Wood, Tubular, Steel Rail, Box, Dan, etc.
  6. That park sign in the first of your pictures...PLEASE tell me that has been preserved! It is such a classic- I LOVE it!
  7. While I can't say that I want this project to fail for Six Flags, I do totally agree that it would be bad news for Kings Island to try this on SoB. Let's hope Cedar Fair doesn't want to go this route on their rides. SoB was never that great of a ride. Please just demolish that ride. Hopefully Texas Giant is one that still has some life left in it, though. Why would Cedar Fair do anything with SoB when they've had the world's largest pile of crap stinking up the tip of Cedar Point for a lot longer than SoB has even been around?
  8. August 14th is the end of summer? When I was kid my family would drive all the way down to WDW once every 4 or 5 years and all but the last year (1990) we stayed at Ft. Wilderness; stayed at Disney Villas in '90...anyways- We would also visit about two weeks before school started in Buffalo, NY which would have put us into late August. It was great- the lines were manageable, the seasonal entertainment such as fireworks and light parades were still running. A few years ago my parents took my sister and her kids down there are that time and it was a mess! Only one park per day was opened late and that made it packed. It is really too bad that Disney has forgotten the wonderful world of late summer- not quite into the shoulder season- still "festive"
  9. I heard they are going to turn it into an AquaTrax!
  10. There were five I could have voted for! If anyone reads the posts before voting- be sure to watch the marcelous43245 for a few moments. I think if that one doesn't win something its because not enough people watched it long enough the see the "ending."
  11. I am confused as to why this topic is on the front page twice (one of top of the other).
  12. ^I think he was trying to make it look like a grade school letter to the park ^^That is exactly the point I was trying to make with this quote, which I think Sea World might have actually used in the past: "We only conserve what we love, we only love what we understand, we only understand what we know, we only know what we are taught.” Baba Dioum, Senegalese Ecologist
  13. I wondered whether or not you called her KidTums or even KT. I can't beleive how much she still looks like my niece. Seeing her Season Pass reminds me of when my niece went to CP she got a T-shirt that said "I survived the Horsey Ride at Cedar Point-" or it might have been Kennywood. Do all of the major parks have their own discussion threads? I should probably know that by now since I've been around almost five years...
  14. I was watching the closing of the Olympics last night and saw a commercial for Clash of the Titans and at one point they said something about a Kraken and I was like "That's not a Kraken! They need to go to Sea World to see what a Kraken looks like," and my roommate is just staring at me. Off Topic- but WHY did NBC decide to cut away from the closing ceremonies for the preview of a new show? The new show wasn't live, but the ceremony was- ugh. It makes me miss living in Buffalo where we could watch Canadian TV :{
  15. I was surprised at the "Q" question- would have been higher if Quantum Loop was still with us.
  16. 14 out of 20- I was shocked I got the speling one right!
  17. ^I am actually not so much "into" rankings actually. I go more on the advice of professionals in my field (including my professors). Proximity to BGT or any other major theme park would be a tie breaker at best, still I don't know if I would want to spend the next five years living some place that I don't like. For example, being an "Urban Guy," I think that Gainesville would drive me crazy- but I can't be sure. Unfortunately I cannot afford to personally visit every school that offers my program, so yes I am soliciting for information on faraway schools. I mentioned its proximity to BGT to keep it topical. My point with Harvard and your last comment is simply this: Your statement certainly applies to many of the fields Harvard covers, but not all of them. Professionals in each field are knowledgeable as to which schools are presently the leaders in their fields. At times it takes awhile for things to shift. Portland State's incoming Masters students in my field have an average GPA of over 3.7 and if that trend continues they will rise quickly in prominence. My comment about Harvard being an "easy grader" was taken from a book written by a former upper level executive of ETS, the company which produces the GRE and other similar tests.
  18. ^&^^ Are you basing your statements on the school's reputation or actual documented facts? Sure a degree from Harvard would look great on your resume, even better than many other schools- in some programs, but not all. Its just like having Gucci stamped on the back of your jeans may make your butt look better. When in actuality it just means that you had the dough to pay for the name versus getting the same quality at a cheaper price. There are only 71 schools in the country offering the umbrella program of my degree. If you list out every division and every concentration you are going to get a different list for each. In overall Urban Planning, Harvard ranks 7th; however, in Urban Research it isn't in the Top 10, but Cleveland State University is 2nd. Which is part of the reason we have nationally known professors in our school- including Norm Krumholz, named one of the Top 50 Planners of all time. In Transportation Planning Portland State (OR) and UCLA rank high. Within the respective fields, professionals know who the top schools are. These ratings are based upon lists compiled by agencies which only rank Urban Studies programs and are compiled by people working in those fields. Other agencies such as the APA choose not to rank programs but only list schools which they feel qualify to be listed. ^^^To some extent reputation is important for the field of academia I am going into; however because it is so specialized there are only a small pool of schools open to me and as such it doesn't really matter which one I go to. Again, Harvard isn't one of those schools, so their reputation in other fields is useless to me.
  19. ^That's funny because my major doesn't come up as existing on that site and furthermore most articles I have read say that one of the main reasons for the GRE, G-MAT, L-SAT, and other such tests is because some schools "such as Harvard" are easier on grading to boost their figures.
  20. ^&^^ They are both listed in Princeton Review's Top 366 Schools and while that is a large number keep in mind that is out of over 4,000 schools in the US alone. In my field, the interesting thing about UF is that their "Specializations" or "Concentrations" are in pairs or trios. What would be two or three different Specializations at other schools are lumped together into one at UF meaning you cannot go as in depth on any single topic. Granted for some there is an advantage to that method. I'll admit my #1 choice is still UIC (and yes I know how to get to SFGAm without a car already) but at this point of winter in the north its hard not to think how wonderful it would be to go to school somewhere warm. I also need to be prepared with more than one option and as I said in my field and specialization there are not that many schools to choose from.
  21. I feel sorry for the other whales. If the trainers stop spending as much time with them, they will think that they did something wrong. Its like with my dog Millie (picture on the left)- usually she comes when I call her name. I usually only have to use the "Come" command if she is bad. If I use "Come" when she is not being bad she thinks that she is and will drop her ears and lower her head.
  22. ^^OSU was so unbelievably "uptight" with me when I called them to gain more information about their version of my intended degree. When I went to visit U of IL- Chicago they had members of the faculty and staff meet me with me and answered all sorts of questions and showed me around the section of campus where most of my classes would be. I tried to set this up with the Department at OSU and they were like "Oh, we don't do that here." Cleveland State University (CSU) has had "Open Enrollment" in the past where there were no admissions requirements at all and even now is fairly easy to get into for undergrad, yet several of our departments are nationally ranked. Our Masters of Public Administration program (in the same school as my major) is ranked 2nd in the country. In my field it is "Highly Recommended" that you take undergrad and grad school in different Regions. I know other fields are like that too. The problem is, all universities look the same online BTW- Many schools are "getting harder to get into" as national enrollment is up significantly. This was forecast even before the current economic situation, although the actual increase has been higher. If I were going along my originally scheduled path of going into Urban Planning- Transportation, then USF would be a great choice as they are one of the few schools to have a full Transportation Design Center. Since I have decided to go for my Ph. D. and remain in the college-field for my career I now have to re-evaluate ll of my previous choices to determine if they will work as research schools- especially considering the somewhat unique focus of my research.
  23. ^You are comparing the nation's 9th largest institute of higher learning and also "one of the nation's top 63 public research universities" with a corporate training program that tells people how to efficiently fry wafer thin meat patties? Ray "I know someone is going to ask 'which is which,' so there I beat you to it" Izard
  24. ^^ UCF doesn't have my major (Urban Studies or Human Geography) which is actually fairly rare. ^I would not pick a school solely based upon its theme park proximity- its just as I was saying, I am going to have to live in the city I go to school in for five years or more so I am looking at many facets of city life- I was just surprised to find a school next to a theme park. I am a non-traditional student so wherever I go for school that is where I would live- I'm way beyond going back home to mom and dad's during summer vacation Elissa- remember when NSYNC was on The Simpsons?
