  1. It's technical on January 6th and is also frequently called "Epiphany". The song "The 12 Days of Christmas" refer to the twelve days from Christmas Day leading to Epiphany (with Christmas Day being the 1st Day of Christmas and January 5th being the 12th Day of Christmas). Most Christan churches will transfer Epiphany to whatever Sunday falls between January 2nd and January 8th, so for Disney to run theirs from the 2nd to the 6th is technically correct (within tradition). Overall, it's a convenient way for Disney to extend their Christmas event beyond New Years... And that's your religious history lesson for today...
  2. In the not too distant past, Six Flags America always announced their new attractions in February/March of the year the attraction opened. Claimed they got more press during that time (as it's usually a slow time of year, especially for theme park news) and it was better for selling season passes. Wonder if Busch Gardens is going to wait that long...
  3. As much as I'd like to see a new custom coaster at Six Flags America, I still don't think they need another coaster anytime soon. I'd be perfectly happy if the next five years brought a Justice League: Battle for Metropolis clone, a Sky Screamer, a ProSlide Hydromagnetic slide, a spiffy new set/show for the Wild West stunt show arena, and maybe another new flat or two...
  4. There's a lot of protected wetland around Mind Eraser/Renegade Rapids. From what I've heard, the park has taken some heat from the county from oil/grease run-off from Mind Eraser and chlorinated water run-off from Renegade Rapids. With the protected wetlands in that area, any construction between/around Mind Eraser/Renegade Rapids is really hampered/prohibited. A path between Apocalypse and Roar would be much more likely.
  5. REALLY coming along quickly! Unfortunately, I'm told the ride will not open until the outdoor attractions typically reopen (early April). They are running a contest to name the new ride. The winning name will get a ride on the first official train as well as 4 all day ride passes. https://www.facebook.com/AdventureParkUSA/app_573103316156284
  6. I searched for a pre-existing thread for Adventure Park, but couldn't find one. If one exists, please feel free to merge this post. If you don't already know about Adventure Park USA, let me provide a little background. The park opened just outside of Frederick, MD quite modestly primarily as an arcade/mini-golf/go carts location. They also had a pretty nice laser tag venue, bumper boats, and a small indoor ropes course. In 2007, they refurbished and relocated a Schwarzkopf Wildcat from Williams Grove (the coaster had been at about three other parks before then including Busch Gardens WIlliamsburg in the late 70's). About the same time, they started looking into building a modest water park (to be built in phases with a wave pool, lazy river, and a slide tower or two). The water park didn't happen back then, but they did add a really nice Christmas light drive through attraction for the holidays. Fast forward to 2014 and the park has since added several flats (mostly kiddie flats), a paintball attraction, and just announced that they will be adding a second coaster. The coaster seems to be Old Town's former Zamperla Windstorm. With the opening of this second coaster, this small, little road side attraction will soon have two coasters and the talks of building a water park have resurfaced! Not saying this place will ever be more than a brief hour or two stop while you're passing through the area, but with their recent additions, they seem to be turning more heads!
  7. Ironically, from what I've been told, the park picked up many of the shade structures SFNO had after that park closed. I'm pretty sure that if you look here (http://binged.it/1xo6M3I) those yellow pieces you see in the field are the supports for the shade structures. Here's an image of the shade structures for reference (http://www.sfno.com/albums/thenandnow/abc.jpg). They have been on the SFA property for years. It's a shame that none have ever been used. The park could really benefit from the extra shade.
  8. A point that is reiterated by each parks' Halloween events. Just the names of the events show how the two chains have completely different objectives (Halloween Horror Nights v. Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween). It's like when a rated G movie and a rated R movie come out on the same weekend. Do you think the studios really care about such competition? Probably not because the core demographic going to each will overlap very little. Sure, you will always have people that will see both, but that demographic is the minority. In my opinion, the same hold true for Disney and Universal. Universal caters to the teens and young adults with just enough for the younger kids to keep them satisfied if they decide to visit. Disney caters to the families and the "family experience" (meaning rides that the entire family can ride together) and includes just enough thrill rides to keep the teens and young adults satisfied that may visit. Not to mention that the Magic Kingdom pulls in more guests per year than the two Orlando Universal parks combined and Disney's least attended Orlando park (Hollywood Studios) pulls in more guests per year that Universal's most attended Orlando Park (IOA). While I've been to all six of the U.S. Disney parks several times, my wife has never been to any of them. We're planning her first for next spring. She asked me what to expect... I told her, "when you go to Disney, don't expect to ride the most thrilling or heart stopping attractions you've ever been on... instead, expect to ride some of the most fun and memorable attractions you've ever been on." I'd be really surprised if Disney went in any other direction than that.
  9. I did a similar trip a few years ago, but it was spread out over two weeks. That's a LOT of driving for one week. I might suggest giving yourself a full day for Dollywood and a half day for Kentucky Kingdom and Holiday World. If you're just planning on hitting the coasters, you can get to Kentucky Kingdom when they open and on the three-ish coasters within an hour or two then head off to Holiday World. Remember that Holiday World is Central time, so if you leave Kentucky Kingdom by noon, it's a 75 min drive to Holiday World and you turn the clock back an hour when you cross into Central Time, so you would get to Holiday World at 12:15 local time.... plenty enough time to hit the coasters AND the waterpark.
  10. I could see them following in Cedar Point's/Carowinds footsteps and building a new coaster that refreshes the front of the park with a new entrance. The image here is just a thought and is more of a hyper layout. I could see the removal (or re-purposing) of the Action FX theater as a station location for the new coaster. To the best of my recollection, they have only been using half of the theater and, even at that, it rarely has a line. The park has a HUGE plaza in the front of the park which could be utilized and a nice stretch of turf that extends out into the parking lot. I think a track that encircles this entrance plaza and extends out into the parking lot could have a huge impact when coming into the park. The layout could be adjusted for a wing-rider type B&M by replacing some of the turns with cobra rolls and in-lines and such. Just an idea...
  11. Hopefully they'll have some sort of computerized dispatch system/variable lift speed to sync up the trains. Otherwise, I'm sure you'll have perfect syncing for the commercial and media day, but after that... well... hopefully that won't be an issue...
  12. Maybe it was originally supposed to go to SFA, but then Six Flags decided to save on shipping costs when it started looking like this would be a slower year? (Australia to Mexico is about 2/3rds the distance of Australia to Maryland)
  13. I don't think you know what "literally" means. Literally. http://theoatmeal.com/comics/literally Actually, Webster's Dictionary changed that within the past year or so... "literally" literally no longer means literally".. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/literally
  14. It's Boo Berry. Well, more specifically, the way he looked on the original 1972 boxes of the cereal. 1972 was also the year the original plans for SFGAdv were conceived (though I think I'm reading too much into that as a clue...)
  15. Looks like Six Flags America will have some sort of new attraction for Fright Fest this year. They have boarded up the old Cyclone queue house (the queue from the scrambler that sat where French Quarter Flyers is now) and there are signs on it seeming to indicate that it will be used for Fright Fess. Seems a little small for a maze, but maybe something like the old Zambora show? https://www.facebook.com/sfafans/photos/a.10151345547629854.490552.310053629853/10152571997529854/?type=1&theater
  16. Maybe S&S sold their original prototype track and are simply going to make a few modifications to make it full circuit (or even just leave it as a shuttle). It wouldn't be the first time that has happened. They sold their original Thrust Air Coaster to Kings Dominion which became Hypersonic (with a few modifications of course).
  17. 4.5 hours later and everyone is on the ground. They site the long delay because everyone needed to be individually harnessed before they could release the restraints on each car (which makes sense) and the firetruck/bucket needed to be repositioned for every car.
  18. Three coasters in four years would be quite out of the norm for SFA... at least out of the norm for what they have done in the past 10 years.
  19. Posted Yet? All the videos and pics here... http://www.holidayworld.com/thunderbird/
  20. Superman was due for a paint job about three years ago and back then we were certain they would do a Bizarro re-theme... and it got repainted... to the same colors it was originally... given the poor reaction SFNE's coaster had for the Bizarro make-over, I would hope they wouldn't do the same to SFA's ride. New trains would be nice, maybe trains with with pull down restraints like Skyrush (or whatever the latest, most comfortable version of those restraints are).
  21. ^While this ride appears to be one of the best dark rides around, as a coaster, I'd say it's not much more exciting than your typical Arrow Mine Train (at best). To me, this is much more a dark ride with some coaster like elements (like Black Diamond at Knoebels) rather than a coaster with some dark ride like elements (like Verbolten at Busch Gardens). But, then again, that's just my opinion on the matter.
  22. They don't need a new coaster anytime soon. They need a dark ride and a log flume and some inverting flats and a re-modeled Looney Tunes Movie Town and a new water slide or two all before they need a new coaster (IMHO at least)...
  23. That's actually the park motto... "Six Flags America: Not as Terrible as You'd Expect"
