  1. let's start day 2 of the lightning round with a great article that appeared in LIFE magazine. Anyone out there remember that periodical? It was a much larger format than a typical magazine which made the scanning of this somewhat difficult. I do love that the Tidal Wave at Marriott's Great America is listed as a top 10 coaster. And the photo of the old Mr. Twister with the Wild Cat intertwined with it is just beautiful. I am surprised that Colossus was not photo featured in this article. That coaster got all the media love back in the late 70's I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this picture...it is maybe one of the all time best coaster photos! and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this ride!
  2. I can squeeze in one more update before the clock strikes midnight bringing the total of 5 updates on the first day of Random Update Lightning Round. Since we just did Fantasyland how about the next one... FRONTIERLAND
  3. WOW! 4 updates in one day...It's is going to be a GREAT week in the attic! FANTASYLAND I love these old storybook based parks!
  4. BAMM...another update! Warner Bros. Movie World, Australia
  5. How's this for another LIGHTNING fast update!!! KOBE PORTOPIALAND the park is no longer in existence.
  6. Random Update LIGHTNING Round! Today I am kicking off a week of what I am calling the "Random Update LIGHTNING Round" For those of you that are readers of this thread you know that when I do a post I usually stick to a specific theme, whether it is a old press announcement or brochures from a certain year. Well I have a ton of stuff that does not really fall under one specific theme so I have decided to gather all those loose ends and post them here...randomly. All posts are now in high resolution so you will be able to read all the great details! You never know what far off and distant park, old photo, or even brochures for long gone parks are going to show up. And there will be at least one new post a day and possibly up to FIVE posts in one day. So make sure you are checking back to see what's new. So now without further delay...Let the LIGHTNING ROUND begin. Oh and don't forget to post your comments about all these random things. Enjoy- Shane Lets start if off with this full page add that Disney ran when Big Thunder Mountain opened. Big Thunder Mountain Strikes!
  7. Yes, Kings Dominion removed the plexi-glass shield as did Kings Island...but that proved to be a fatal mistake.
  8. The reasons I did not like the Intamin flight trainers: - the rotation of the ride was SLOW so there was no thrill to the spin. - the rotation of the cabin was slow so there was a lot of UNCOMFORTABLE hanging from the restraints. No use of gravity to hold you in your seat. - the plexi-glass shield prevented any wind hitting your face so not only was the ride slow but without the wind it made it seem even slower...and it got stuffy inside. Although some people my disagree with my comment that the rides sucked I think the verdict from the jury and the parks is in...a unanimous "SUCKED" and they have all since been removed and Intamin does not even offer the ride anymore.
  9. ha ha...Mack rides require more room than my park has and I bet one ride from them cost more than my entire park. Those rides are for the big boys, I am still in my infancy.
  10. I am confused too. Is this a stand up or floorless???????
  11. ^ I bet that is exactly what they are thinking
  12. test Hooray! Looks like I'll be able to bring you higher resolution photos, brochures and maps in the future! Thanks Robb! Hooray! Looks like I'll be able to bring you higher resolution photos, brochures and maps in the future! Thanks Robb!
  13. MACK Ride Catalog 2010 Here is a ride catalog I picked up at the IAAPA show. It is from one of my FAVORITE ride manufacturers...MACK. Not only are their rides amazing to ride but they are also beautiful to look at. I hope we see more of this company in the states soon! It looks like the Sea World parks have discovered the greatness of these rides now the other parks need to get on board. Mack also owns the incredible Europa-Park. It you have not been to this park yet I recommend you book your flight now! Shane PS- get ready for the "Random Update Lightning Round!"
  14. and while I was looking through my files to pull up info on the Flight Trainer, I came across this old gem. This was my winning entry to one of TPR's Photoshop Contest. As I read over it again I still found myself chuckling...great comedy never gets old! Here is an entry for the "Best of Shane's Amusement Attic"
  15. This latest post seemed to generate some interest in that awful creation, Flight Trainer. So I have posted this little bonus (it has been posted earlier before in this thread but, for those that are new, here it is again). A look back at Intamin's marketing of the Flight Trainer. Intamin's flier for the new ride. Here the ride is dubbed "Flying Trainer" Here the ride is featured on the cover of the ride catalog This looks like the prototype ride set up at Intamin's factory. They list Kings Dominion and Marriott's Santa Clara as ride locations. Somebody at Intamin must not have got the memo that Marriott was out of the theme park biz.
  16. Wasn't there also an Intamin Flight Trainer at Rye Playland? And the original announcement of the Las Vegas Stratosphere included a Flight Trainer on the top of the tower instead of the S&S tower.
  17. I am a big proponent of making things right and one of the biggest mistakes that should be made right is to rebuild Opryland. Well check out this: http://www.wsmv.com/entertainment/22337886/detail.html Could Opryland Theme Park Return? Gaylord Spokesperson Does Not Deny Rumor NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- For everyone who misses the Opryland theme park, there is news that might cheer you up. There is talk that Gaylord Entertainment expanding its business, especially since Nashville's new convention center just received approval. According to the City Paper, a theme park might be part of the plan. A spokesperson for Gaylord on Monday did not deny the possibility. Gaylord closed the Opryland theme park in 1997 and built the Opry Mills shopping center in its place. Let's hope that this rumor soon becomes a reality. It would be the best news of 2011!
  18. GREAT AMERICA 1988-1991 Well the 90's were very good to this park. It was finally taking a turn for the better after struggling under the ownership of the city of Santa Clara. KECO (Kings Entertainment CO, which would soon become Paramount Parks) had just purchased the park and all the assets in 1989, land not included, and had begun to heavily invest in the park. It seemed for a couple of years they closely followed the other Great America park in Gurnee. First they followed the Gurnee park with a stand up coaster then they followed with the inverted coaster. Things were looking good for this park...until the Cedar Fair era. I don't know what is going to happen to this park now. If I was a gambling man I would be that this park is on it's last leg, soon to go the way of Geauga Lake and AstroWorld. Sad as that may be, let's look back on happier times. Shane's Amusement Attic is proud to present Great America in the 90's! Enjoy! First we do the build up to the 90's. Here is the park in 88 1989: I might have rethought this addition since the ride SUCKED! park map and information 1988 Hooray for the Tidal Wave!
  19. I remember when they used to try to name a ride to fit into it's themed area. Now they come up with a name and to hell where it ends up in the park. Knott's has "jumped the shark"
  20. R.D.- A couple of attic readers have asked me about this program and I wish I had it in my collection. Unfortunately I do not which is too bad cause I sure would love to see some POV from the Turn of the Century. Speaking of Great America, there will be an update posted soon from 1991 at the CA park.
  21. I couldn't have said it better! Did I miss something?????
  22. Bell's Amusement Park Here is a quick look at Bell's Amusement Park in Tulsa, OK...well it was in Tulsa, OK. Now it has entered into Amusement Park Limbo with AstroWorld's Greezed Lightnin. Will theses two ever see the light of day again. They say they will be back but that has yet to be seen.
  23. Controversial coaster = Drachen Fire...discuss
  24. MAGIC SPRINGS Here is one more update before the end of the year. Not a real exciting one as this park has never been a park that has excited me. It remains one of the only parks in the US that I have not visited, but since Ed Hart has been in the news lately with his proposed, new Kentucky Kingdom I thought it would be interesting to take a look at his latest project. When I heard Ed had taken over Magic Springs I really had high hopes for this park, especially after seeing what he did for Kentucky Kingdom. But it never got too exciting...a used mine ride here and a SLC there...yawn. One thing that always baffled me about this park was their Arrow shuttle loop, the Roaring Tornado. At the time (1980) they installed a pretty major attraction , but a couple of years later it was gone and with out a significant replacement. (it was sold and relocated to the old Elitch Gardens). I had heard a couple of things about the reasoning, one was that it was too terrifying for the people (and I use that term loosely) of Arkansas, the other was that they stopped making their loan payments on the ride and the bank resold it right out from under them. I don't know what the real reason was maybe some of our friends from the area can solve this mystery for us. -Shane obviously the park used the coaster from Circus World for their promotions. the park in it's early years the parked stepped up their game when they relocated the Florida Hurricane from Boardwalk & Baseball.
  25. ^ I rode both rides...and Big Bad Wolf was WAY better than the Bat!
