moinab Posted November 19, 2005 Posted November 19, 2005 We spent a few hours at the Jacksonville Zoo this morning. It was supposed to rain, but it was just a bit cloudy and cool. We arrived right at opening, and pretty much had the place to ourselves. It was great! We headed over to the Range of the Jaguar exhibit. It just opened this year, and we haven't had a chance to really check it out yet. We were very impressed. It is beautifully themed - almost Disney quality. On the way out, we stopped at the giraffe overlook to see the baby giraffes! Hope you enjoyed this little trip to the zoo! This carousel is new, but my kids aren't really carousel fans. Christian did enjoy getting up on this photo spot zebra and hamming it up. Blue dart frogs. Rhiannon loved being this close to the jaguar (or, as she referred to it, "cool cat.") Anteaters are cool. I think the capybaras are cute - like giant guinea pigs. Eventually, they retreated back into the landscaping, but they were with us for quite a while. Then, Mr. FancyFeathers showed up to join the party. She seemed rather pleased with herself. She stole the remnants of my peanut butter sandwich. A few peahens showed up to keep us company. He liked climbing on this little stage area. Christian had been asking to go to the zoo all week. Here is the entrance to Range of the Jaguar. As you can see, it wasn't very crowded.
PhishyBrewer Posted November 19, 2005 Posted November 19, 2005 Very cool! Those froggy's were bright. They sure weren't bullfrogs. Thanks for sharing.
coasterguy618 Posted November 19, 2005 Posted November 19, 2005 Nice Random Photo TR! Those Blue Dart frogs are sweet! ---Gaven
CoasterCrazy Posted November 19, 2005 Posted November 19, 2005 Thanks for posting the great pictures of the Jacksonville Zoo.
BelizeIt Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 I Love Jaguars, they are an Incredible Animal. Jaguars are a Strong and Powerful Animal, Which live in the Great Central American Country of Belize. Nice Trip Report!
Hattuchili Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 Nice photo TR. However, blue frogs? I´ve never seen blue frogs, they are looking cool! --Sören
moinab Posted November 20, 2005 Author Posted November 20, 2005 D'oh! I just realized I posted the same picture twice! Oh well. Thanks for the kind words everyone. Soren, those blue frogs are poisonous, and are used to create poison darts. That is where they get the name "dart frog."
Teddymonster Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 ^^Little known fact...they are only poisonous because of what they eat. If you have them as pets, which you can, you usually are only going to feed them storebought foods, thus ridding them of their toxic mucous. <

Of course, I didn't have time to read all of the information, because I was too busy taking pictures and chasing small children. I'll have to try to read it next time, to see if they include that bit of info. TPR - fun and educational!
