Philrad71 Posted January 2, 2016 Posted January 2, 2016 ^ Fair enough. I just Googled both Embassy Suites and if you book now, it's about $150 American per night with a king suite overlooking the Horseshoe Falls. I was surprised to see that the Embassy Suites in downtown Buffalo was running higher (about $180 per night), so I wonder if I tried to book a time when then there is an event planned for downtown. Also keep in mind that this search was done for mid-week Tuesday - Thursday in mid-June. My recommendation would be to not visit on the weekend as it looks like the rates just about double for a Saturday night stay ($242+) on the Canadian side. And definitely stay away from the Falls around any US or Canadian holiday weekend. Not only will the prices of everything sky-rocket, the wait times to get over the US/Canada bridges will be insane no matter which one you try to cross.
ArgoZ Posted January 2, 2016 Posted January 2, 2016 Nice find, and that's done on a wim. Using discounts like AAA, hotel promotions and etc, combined with strong dollar, the Falls is a steal right now. While my mind is running I must mention that most people just experience "The Falls" and don't realize what the whole Niagara area has to offer. There are amazing winery tasting tours in this area that people love. History buffs should take the drive down the Niagara Parkway to Qweenston Heights and Fort George. Very scenic areas that were the sites of great battles that shaped both our countries. Then there is Niagara on the Lake. An 19th century English town with small shops, tea houses, flower covered sidewalks, horse drawn buggies, and home to the Shaw Festival (Theatre shows) in summer. I've had people tell me that visiting that town was the highlight of their trip, never mind the falls. I realize this is far from the coaster loving enthusiast ideas we have, but I like to mix it up a bit on my vacations, for the wife anyway!
bert425 Posted January 2, 2016 Author Posted January 2, 2016 Thanks folks! making notations on all suggestions. . . leaning towards flight into Buffalo, and then booking a shuttle to take us to the Canadian side (found a decent FallsView room at Marriott right on the falls for a very reasonable price). so investigating if this plan (fly USA, shuttle to Canada) would work we'd be looking at likely Mon-Wed (Mon/Tues night stay) in Niagra Falls, then late afternoon flight on Wed into LaGuardia, which would give us Wed Evening thru Sun stay (5 nights) in Manhattan, with a flight back on Monday afternoon. that means we'd likely end up hitting Coney Island on a Summer weekend (which would be just fine, as the only things we'd really ride would be Cyclone, and maybe a few flats), and I have a feeling it would be more "fun" with the crowds. But the Great Adventure trip will have to be likely on a Friday.. . oh well, still not a weekend!
Philrad71 Posted January 2, 2016 Posted January 2, 2016 ^ I am sure that SGAdv enthusiasts can tell you if would need a Flash Pass, but the Buffalo, NF and NYC plans sound pretty solid for you now!
boldikus Posted January 3, 2016 Posted January 3, 2016 ^ Depends on when, and don't buy a flash pass for Great Adv til you get there and feel it out. Gold Pass will usually do the trick (around $60 per person) but a Friday in early June before schools get out you may be ok. Just have to keep an eye out for school trips, youth outings, etc. usually advertised on the website. In summer its camp trips on weekdays, but you do get lucky with a quiet park sometimes (if its hot everyone goes to the waterpark, overcast or off/on rainy days etc) But being in a giant hot packed Six Flags park with nothing but teens and preteens will make the flash pass seem more than worth it. However, again some weekdays can be REALLY quiet. But if you do plan on hitting the park and want to get it all in over the course of one day or afternoon, and it is crowded, splurge. So worth it when its busy. And you'll probably want to ride El Toro more than once.
ScreaminNewEngland Posted January 3, 2016 Posted January 3, 2016 Surprised nobody has mentioned Lake Compounce, its only about an hour from the city and night rides on Boulder Dash are unforgettable. Plus they will be adding the new Phobia, premier launch coaster to their line up. Six Flags New England is only about 40 minutes north of LC and has two of some of the best coasters on the planet. (Superman and Wicked Cyclone)
