simon8899
As the day temperatures slowly go above freezing and it will be sunny for the week I'll finally visit the two big carnivals going on right now. First will be the Frühlingsdom in my hometown Hamburg - this time with the Schwarzkopf Double-Loop Teststrecke. Other highlights are a Zierer Star Shape and Witchdance (Hexentanz), a Schwarzkopf Monster and of course by Huss a Dancer and a Take Off. Finally a KMG XXL Afterburner is also here. On the weekend I'll hop over to Bremen to visit the Osterwiese - the smaller brother/sister to the Freimarkt each fall. Here you'll find a Mack Seesturmbahn, a SBF Super Jumper as well as two Dancer - a standard and a bigger No.2 - and a Schwarzkopf Monster with the nice name Octopussy. simon8899
Hamburg.de has put up a nice gallery with historic DOM pictures like wooden rollercoasters that were only built for the few weeks of the carnival. DOM History on hamburg.de
simon8899
And now finally some photos from Wednesday! 55 meter ferris wheel greets you at the St. Pauli entrance The 1950s Siemens Rotor is still big fun Huss Frisbee by showmen Robrahn is mostly a favorite with girls Portable 50 meter Star Flyer halfway up Mondial Shaker this time on another spot on the fairgrounds Even at only 7 degrees C some people ride the rafts Finally arrived at Teststrecke Which family ride has such a nice backwall painting? A Zierer Hexentanz - Witch's Dance - quite harmless but giving some small pops of airtime A slightly taller Zierer ride is next up Star Shape No.1 looming high over the midway On for some classic EDIT Cosmont Musikexpress fun No carnival is complete without bumper cars. And as they should be: Without seatbelts or lapbars like in some other countries... XXL Afterburner soarin high! DOM Dancer got it's first LEDs this year Seems to be fun... On my ride the operator did a great manual program synched to "Scream & Shout" Look what's coming up next... And another family-friendly painting Wilde Maus XXL the second coaster this spring Anyone has the Huss serial numbers memorized??? It belongs to best-run Take Off I know! The operator mostly spins the compartments clockwise at full speed. Hint: The Take Off at Särkeniemmi never runs at full speed... With the also clockwise spinning mainplate the G-forces are freaking intense - at full speed IMO even higher than Mission Space: Orange at Epcot! All Schwarzkopf fanboys go OOOMMMMMMMM Big Monster always a fun ride Final pic for now. More DOM and Osterwiese pics in the upcoming days and weeks! the ghost
Oh European carnivals... crazy in all of the right ways! I will now be the one thousandth(or so) TPR member to say this, but the awesome fairs in Europe make me VERY jealous! That being said a flat ride more intense than mission space orange seems like it would make me very sick... the spinning does not bother me, but I don't want to see I'm spinning if that makes sense... everything moving by so fast in a fast circular direction... BLEH! Thanks for sharing!
Jew
Every time you post more amazing pictures I always think the same thing: I wish we had those rides in the U.S!
simon8899
^ You've the huge themeparks - we've the best carnivals... everything moving by so fast in a fast circular direction... BLEH! At full speed everything you'll see is in a wild blur. I normally never get affected by fast spinning but on this Take Off the high Gs combined with the spinning blur makes me wonderfully tupsy-turvy exiting the ride - like having drunk quite some beers. On this Take Off I nearly always see people turning the content of their stomachs outside...
simon8899
Only one hour from Hamburg by high-speed train is the city of Bremen which - at the same time of the Hamburger DOM - hosts the Osterwiese. Being a little smaller than the Freimarkt in autumn it offered no major coaster but had some most beauiful rides on the german carnival circuit. First ride of the day was a KMG afterburner A standard portable log-flume by Reverchon which you'll find on many European carnivals The crsip weather notwithstanding people ride it The first highlight is a Mack Seesturmbahn like the Kolumbus-Jolle at Europa-Park - but far more beautifully themed It's the ride with the mermaid! It also has a fountain in the middle - in wamrer weather the operator can spray the riders Yes we Germans like David Hasselhoff! The only coaster here is a standard Mack wild mouse This wild mouse also got it's LED package as lightbulbs are no longer allowed in the EU View down the midway One of the most beautiful Break Dancer - the Happy Traveller with the cocktail umbrellas over the gondolas This unique swinging ship was made by showmen Kalbfleisch in 1978 and is on the carnivals since then The most beautiful Schwarzkopf Monster on german carnivals: Octopussy The whole ride is a paintbrush marvel Even each gondola is individually paintbrushed But what is Octopussy doing here??? Next to all the eyecandy this Monster runs on a great program and the gondolas spin freakingly fast A Jumper still with Easter decoration A self-operated looping swing The most beautful Mack Musikexpress - Troika You want inversions? You get them 55 meters over the ground! A random kiddie ride Note the great backwall painting Final ride of the day is the big Break Dancer No.2 with the cow Waiting for the ride to stop. This Dancer is owned by showmen Dreher - "drehen" translates to "to spin" - a fitting name for a showmen... Thats the last pic from Bremen, folks! thrillerman1
Wow thank you for sharing all of these AMAZING photos...so many beautiful rides! It is odd to see those newer looking trains on Teststrecke instead of the older familiar Schwarzkopf design. Were those made by Intamin?
simon8899
The trains were made by SAT Rides GmbH - they also made the trains for the Boomerang at the Vienna Prater
gisco
Love the pictures. I would be nice if we had carnivals like that here in the US.
