Brandy524 Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 "That's easy, you don't have to right that one down. It's a cup of flour, a cup of sugar, a cup of fruit cocktail with the juice, and you mix and bake at three-hundred and fifty 'til gold and bubbly." Way back when Steel Magnolias was a new movie, my mom decided to try this recipe and see if it actually worked. It did. I was at Aldi last week and passed by the cans of fruit cocktail and decided to make this myself. Enjoy! I didn't add the ingredients in order of the recipe. Sue me. I would actually probably add a little extra fruit juice to this. Dollar General sugar! Action shot! Fruit and a pile of sugar. Yum. Dollar General flour! How many things can you say about adding ingredients to a dish? All stirred up and it kind of looks like it's already been eaten once. Did I just ruin the yum factor for you? Preheat to 350. And yes, this picture actually should have been the first one. Into the oven. Gold and bubbly. Actually it wasn't too bubbly. I think it needed more juice, and I think I left it in too long. I left it in for 35 minutes because it wasn't turning golden. Lesson learned.
doublestufforeo Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 Sounds like a dump cake to me what with the recipe how it's like a can of pineapple, a can of cherry, a package of cake mix, butter, and add whatever else you want, (i.e. nuts or other fruits and whatnots.) Awesome TR, I love to watch any cooking, I find it fascinating, and I'm going to have to make one eventually, when I crack open that bake sale book we have, and put that Kitchen Aid to work!
moinab Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 I've never seen Steel Magnolias. What is it supposed to be? Like a bread pudding/spoon bread kind of thing?
Brandy524 Posted March 15, 2011 Author Posted March 15, 2011 They don't actually cook it in the movie; they're just talking about recipes, so I'm not really sure. Every time my mother made it, it was always kind of like a fruit cobbler of sorts.
printersdevil78 Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Thanks for the recipe! I tried it tonight and served it up with Cool Whip. My fiancee liked it. My stepdaughter-to-be wasn't impressed... but she liked the Cool Whip, anyway! Here's how mine turned out.
Brandy524 Posted March 16, 2011 Author Posted March 16, 2011 Looks good! I'll have to make some again and add a little more juice and not leave it in the oven as long. I'm going to do a cake pop TR sometime soon, just have to find the time to actually make some!
BeemerBoy Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 I so wish I could have some of that for lunch right now.
Moose Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 How is this stuff? Is it good? It looks sorta iffy, but I am sure it's delicious.
Brandy524 Posted March 17, 2011 Author Posted March 17, 2011 It's good! It really needs more juice than I put in, and don't leave it in the oven as long. It's sort of a mixed fruit cobbler of sorts.
Moose Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 (edited) I tried this last night but with canned peaches instead of the fruit cocktail. It was ok. It tasted of raw flour, so maybe I didn't bake it long enough. Edited March 21, 2011 by Moose
