chadster Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 I am currently evaluating several Anti Virus/Spyware/Malware products with the goal of killing McAfee once and for all. (resource hog!) The requirements are simple, must have a central management console, must be able to push agents to workstations, must be able to kill malware and viruses. Cost is no issue, after all, it's your tax dollars at work So far I am only considering three choices. Vipre, AVG, and Kaspersky. So as not to taint the voting pool, I won't tell you which one we are currently more impressed with. I have royaly jacked up several test computers on my test domain. (Yes, it's segregated from everyone else and noone knows where it is, what it is, or what it's called, so in essence, it's super secret, till now, sort of, ha ha) and thus far only one has been able to fix/catch everything I've thrown at it. So, has anyone used any of the above products and if so, what has been you experience? Full disclosure, Norton and McAfee are off the table, which, I think goes without saying. Thanks!
ebl Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 I've been using the free version of AVG for quite some time, and I've been happy with it. Also, weekly, I run Ad-Aware, Spybot Search & Destroy, Malwarebytes, and CC Cleaner. Yeah, a lot of stuff, but it keeps my computer going. Google any of those to find out how to get them. Eric
chadster Posted January 10, 2011 Author Posted January 10, 2011 ^ Malwarebytes rocks, that's for sure, unfortunatley, when we talked to the company they couldn't offer us a central management console, why, who knows. We were willing to forgo the pushing of the software requirement since it's not an agent, especially at $4 a node, but no dice It truley is one of the best and I've paid for the full version for home use even tho the freebie works just as well, thought they could use some love. Have you had any performance issues with AVG's latest upgrades?
ebl Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 So far, everything is going OK and I haven't noticed any issues. I run a scan once a week and that seems to be enough. Eric
ginzo Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 Kaspersky is the best AV software I've ever used. I've had malware infections that other AV programs couldn't find even though the machine was obviously infected. I could see randomly-named malware processes being spawned with Process Explorer. I hate AV software because it winds up causing more problems for me than malware does. AV software kills performance. I just install a trial version of Kaspersky and run a scan if I think I have a problem. You're right in ruling out McAfee and Norton. Those are both performance-killing toys.
ebl Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 I've often wondered if companies that produce anti-virus/anti-malware programs have ever generated any "viruses." That way, their products would never be obsolete... Just a thought. Eric
Ace Of Spades Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 I do remember that once upon a time, I had Norton Antivirus flag itself as a virus and attempted to delete itself. I just watched as it did itself in and then went and grabbed Malawarebytes, and haven't had a problem since. As for your case, I've had decent luck with Trend-Micro in the past. AVG has never worked for me, and I've never even heard of the other two.
