inflameswetrust21 Posted September 6, 2010 Posted September 6, 2010 As some of you know i have recently started using newton 2 to make rides. Well on this project in progress i will be making my first attempt at custom supports. PLease follow this project and give me feedback on the screenshots below. davisal771 Posted September 6, 2010 Posted September 6, 2010 Tips: Look at pictures of how real Intamin Hypers and Mega-Lites are supported. Then build off that.
inflameswetrust21 Posted September 7, 2010 Author Posted September 7, 2010 just started school so with homework and all this project will take about another week i hate my school
davisal771 Posted September 7, 2010 Posted September 7, 2010 ^ Haha, me too. I just started high school, and I'm taking all honor classes, and participate in a ton of after school activities. Today is one of the few days I didn't have much homework.
inflameswetrust21 Posted September 8, 2010 Author Posted September 8, 2010 (edited) your a freshman to? Edited October 2, 2010 by inflameswetrust21
Vekoma Fan Boy Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 ^Dude, you're gonna get chewed out by the mods if you don't start posting with proper English. Just warning you. And as for the coaster, it looks good, but you need to keep working on your transitions. They're still really weird and uncomfortable looking.
Montuman99 Posted October 1, 2010 Posted October 1, 2010 I feel that I would loose my butt from all the airtime on this machine! I would LOVE to see a POV!
inflameswetrust21 Posted October 1, 2010 Author Posted October 1, 2010 I will be finishing this project on Saturday afternoon. School has taken over my life so i had no time to work on it but it will finally be here.
inflameswetrust21 Posted October 3, 2010 Author Posted October 3, 2010 After about two hours of this weekend that i was not studying i finished this ride. It was my first attempt at custom supports. I hope you enjoy it. I give you Wing Rider. Wing Rider.nltrack
inflameswetrust21 Posted October 5, 2010 Author Posted October 5, 2010 Dose anybody have anything to say about the ride. I know the support work is not that good but give me a break its my first ever attempt at custom supports so I was not really expecting a masterpiece.
let1gre Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 It's a good ride. I really liked the layout, it had a good amount of airtime and lots of twisting. One comment I would have is the ride seemed kind of slow, especially going over the larger hills and towards the end of the ride, when it was crawling along at around 20 mph. I'm not sure how this could get fixed except for major track adjustments or launch track somewhere.
coasterlover420 Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 I agree with most of what let1gre said. I think the main reason the last hills are somewhat slow is that the default friction factor in Newton2 does not relate to trains. Like the tutorials say, the speed factor on N2 is based on a point, not a train; so a train would cause a lot more friction over a longer track or with a longer train. One of the unfortunate things about N2 is that you can't really change that after making a track, you have to consider everything before starting the track. Also, I know you mentioned that the supports need work, but I think you made them a little too complicated. Most of the supports would cause your track to fall over because they were at such an extreme angle. The point of supports is mainly to keep the track off the ground, not necessarily to combat the forces of the train. Roller coaster track itself is very very heavy. Next time, try to think about keeping the supports directly under the track rather then at a weird slant, and try not to use prefab supports. Even if you want a basic structure, hand-made supports are much more impressive.

One of the unfortunate things about N2 is that you can't really change that after making a track, you have to consider everything before starting the track. Not quite, close though. Its the train's mass that is calculated as if it is a single point, which creates a few subtle changes in how the train would behave in a frictionless environment. The real difference is that in NL, most of the friction from the ride is air friction, which is proportional to the trains velocity squared, so the amount of friction the train must work against is that plus the coefficient of friction created by its wheels. Newton2 uses a single friction coefficient which would act on the train as if it were in a vacuum. Since Newton2 can not account for momentum loss because of air friction, it takes a lot of time and practice to learn to tailor an appropriate friction coefficient for a certain type of ride with a certain number of cars. [/nerd rant] Kinda makes me glad that NL2 will have a more advanced FVD design system... heh.
mightbeawannabe Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 ^Basically, Newton only works at full capacity after you find the friction values and work around the vacuum-like issue in calculation. But even then it's still not 100% perfect.
davisal771 Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 So Newton2 is even more complicated than any of us thought I'll keep using it as I am currently; it's working for me
AJClarke0912 Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 (edited) ^There's one point in Algebra II in high school that when you learn graph types you say (to yourself) "Hey! That's how Newton works!". Newton is all graphs with pre-calculated forces and curves. All you have to do is move sliders (the tension/magnitude of the graph), so it's extremely watered-down from other programs like Redunzelizer's "Infamous" Prefabrication Purgatorium. In Purg, you have to start with no track and make formulas from scratch to construct things that RESEMBLE a layout (unless you're Red himself and can actually understand it ). Newton is so watered down..............which I particularly like! Edited October 8, 2010 by AJClarke0912
mightbeawannabe Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 I don't take the time to get values and stuff like that either....Just too much work for a less-than inspired individual. EDIT: Beat me by that much, AJ!
davisal771 Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 ^^ Within 5 minutes of downloading purgatorium I deleted it Guess I'll have to wait till next year in Algebra 3/4 to understand it better... That or I'll master Newton and be all smartlike in the class
