pkdcoaster Posted June 24, 2010 Posted June 24, 2010 This past weekend I took my kids to Ocean city for some time with my extended family on my Dads side (most of whom I have not seen in 12 years) of course New coasters made the trip easier to swallow This was my first trip ever to Ocean city, it was very touristy which isn't a bad thing. The boardwalk was very lively with live performers, lights, food and rides everywhere. here are some pics from the weekend of fun. JEFF The view from the front of the Hilton. (nice pick mom) My kids are ready for a weekend of fun Sometimes the best rides in the world are not made from wood or steel! Aidan tackling the waves The beach was very nice but the waves were a little small The view from our room of the awesome kids pool A look down the beach (our hotel was about 5 blocks beyond the Boardwalk) I caught this awesome pic of a School of 5 Dolphins from our balcony. Sun is down......onto the rides Some Wacky Worm Whoring with the kids! The Jolly Roger Amusement park had a Wildcat coaster IMO still the best portable coaster layout. one of three Wacky Worms in Ocean City Jolly Roger also had a really Nice Waterpark (wish we had more time to try it out) Abigail is fearless Aidan approves of the sweet views the ferris wheel provides This is the "big" coaster in OC a 1986 Boomerang at Trimpers rides Could not resist a great opp. for night pics it was very well taken care of and had a very nice lighting package For some reason the back was much smoother than the front. when real estate is at a premium you have to squeeze everything in. They did have a Tobagan coaster till last year. but I did manage 5 new credits I was impressed at how many rides they had in a small area This was Aidan's first Boomerang he now has 23 credits Jolly Roger at the pier had a Looping star. It looks like it would be brutal but it was not that bad. My sister decided to tag along for pics we decided to take the Chesapeke bay bridge tunnel and it was a gorgeous drive especially at sunset (love this pic of my Abby) a few nice sunset pics I took from the observation area If you have the opportunity to make this drive over the Bay. I recommend it highly Thanks for reading
1pizza14 Posted June 24, 2010 Posted June 24, 2010 Looks like you had a great trip! In every picture it seems like you were the only ones in the park. Nice hotel room view BTW
cfc Posted June 24, 2010 Posted June 24, 2010 Trimper's Boomerang isn't bad as Boomerangs go, and I like their haunted house quite a bit. All you were missing from the, well, missing Toboggan was a trip to the chiropractor. Thanks for the TR, Jeff.
pkdcoaster Posted June 24, 2010 Author Posted June 24, 2010 All you were missing from the, well, missing Toboggan was a trip to the chiropractor. Small price to pay for a new credit Especially when I am so close to 300! JEFF
slicknixon Posted June 24, 2010 Posted June 24, 2010 (edited) Ah, Ocean City brings back so many childhood memories. Sad to hear Trimper's got rid of the Toboggan!! I took quite a few runs on that thing when I was a kid. Do you know if they put anything in it's place? If you aren't sure where it was originally it was right across from Pirate's Cove. Still love Trimpers' dedication to preserve the Bill Tracy classics and really that park hasn't changed a whole lot since I was younger. They used to have an Allan Herschell Sky Wheel which was removed somewhere around 2000-2001 but between that and the Toboggan the same big rides have been there for as long as I remember. Anyone know what the word is on Trimpers' battle with the OC property taxes? I swear a part of me would die if that place went under. Anyway, Ocean City is one of the best beach resorts anywhere as long as you go at the right time. August to late season is the worst time to go as it is really crowded and has sort of a jersey shore atmosphere. Early season to the end of July is the best time to take your family but even still OC isn't quite the same family destination as it was in the 90's. The best thing about OC is all the landmark mom and pop restaurants and businesses that have been there for many many years and continue to thrive despite the city's attempts to "modernize" by increasing property taxes and what have you. Regardless, every year small things leave and newer, more touristy things and high-rise condos go in. Even though it's happening slowly, OC will undoubtedly with time become a very different place from the one we knew and loved as kids so enjoy it while it's here. If you've never been there before, I implore you to discover it's wonders. A trip to Trimper's, an excellent dinner at the original Philips and a round of mini-golf at one of the many Old Pro courses are just a few of the unique things that makes OC such a great family beach resort. Josh Linn Posted June 24, 2010 Posted June 24, 2010 OCMD is that ish...it may not have as good of a coaster collection as other beaches, but the boardwalk and overall atmosphere is unmatched. I still have yet to get any of their credits, though.
slicknixon Posted June 24, 2010 Posted June 24, 2010 ^ Agreed. There really is no place like it. It's one of the few gems of the east coast and has always been like a summer home to me for a week every summer growing up. I'd love to see another park go in, maybe up near Fenwick Island or Fager's Island like where the old Ocean Playland park used to be. But really, the place has been great for all these years with just Trimpers, the pier, and Jolly Roger's. I do admit that I would like to see a bit of improvement out of the Jolly Roger company as they leave a good bit to be desired but Splash Mountain is a great water park. For how small of an area it's in, they pack in a lot of slides and a decent wave pool, lazy river and kid's play area. I always imagined Jolly Roger's would be better off getting rid of the over-priced Speedworld by expanding the amusement park and wrapping it around the water park. Seriously, Speedworld takes up at least twice as much space as the park and although I've had some fun there when I was younger, JR has the most overpriced seaside amusements anywhere. I do gotta hand it to them for the water park though. Admission isn't a terrible price and the quality is several notches above what the company has to offer with the rest of their stuff. Honestly though, I've been to carnivals with a better quality experience than Jolly Roger AP and Jolly Roger at the Pier.
Speeddeamon128 Posted June 25, 2010 Posted June 25, 2010 Awesome TR it looke like you had a lot of fun! My family is thinking about going down there this summer for the first time I'm looking forward to it if it happens!
cal1br3tto Posted June 27, 2010 Posted June 27, 2010 I love Ocean City; the boardwalk is so delightfully seedy. I'm still bitter that I did not get any of the credits. Thanks for helping bring back some memories!

It's too bad Jolly Roger still doesn't have the shuttle loop they used to have.
cfc Posted June 27, 2010 Posted June 27, 2010 (edited) Jolly Roger's also has one of the lamest dark rides anywhere--unless your greatest fear is riding around in a mostly empty aluminum box during a heatwave. (The Trimper's dark ride is very good, though.) Edited June 27, 2010 by cfc
Yamez Posted June 27, 2010 Posted June 27, 2010 I love Ocean City, I almost spent my last week there with a bunch of friends. Family issues though, alas. Its a fun place to visit, especially if you enjoy beaches and people. Also, the nightlife isn't too shabby
