Sir Clinksalot Posted October 2, 2009 Posted October 2, 2009 I'm trying to decide which PS3 to get. GameStop is having a deal that you can trade in your PS2 and get $50 trade-in credit towards the new PS3 slim. I think this sounds like a great deal, and I know the system is a bit faster on load-up, etc. But ... they also have the 80gb 80% backwards compatable one, but I'd only get about $20 for the PS2 at that point. Plus, it's not "new". The only PS2 games that we still play are Star Wars Battlefront and DDR. So I'd trade those in as well and probably get another $10 or so. They are coming out with DDR for the PS3 in January, although there is no word on if we can use our existing mats with it (as we can't trade those in). Should I just say screw it to the PS2 and get the slim?
jjeerr Posted October 2, 2009 Posted October 2, 2009 Make sure the 80GB PS3 is a 4-USB port model, anything with 2-USB ports won't play PS2 games at all. All PS3s can play PS1 games. I'm going to guess that you can't use the old DDR mats on PS3 DDR, there are mixed reports of being able to use DDR mats though a PS2-USB controller port adapter on PS2 DDR games, but I wouldn't count on being able to do it. Personally, I'd get the PS3 slim. It's cooler, lower power, smaller, and is sealed-in-box. (note: I have a 80GB MotorStrom-bundle PS3)
Sir Clinksalot Posted October 2, 2009 Author Posted October 2, 2009 I went with the Slim!!! I had $200 in Visa gift cards so for the PS3, 2 games (Force Unleashed, MLB 2K8 (used)), extra controller, remote control and warranty ... only $189 out of my pocket.
jmicha Posted October 2, 2009 Posted October 2, 2009 ^Nice! I'm jealous, I bought an 80GB backwards compatible PS3 last summer for it's price then ($400 I think...) and it came with MGS4. The hard drive wasn't of worry because I knew I would replace it eventually, which I did this last January for my birthday. I got a 500GB hard drive since I like using my PS3 as more of an overall entertainment system rather than just for games. I currently have about 300 movies and 10GB of music on it which is awesome for parties. All of it uses one system opposed to fumbling around with different things. That's why I love the PS3 so much more than the 360. But enough of my rambling, enjoy your PS3 Slim. They're awesome to own.
Sir Clinksalot Posted October 3, 2009 Author Posted October 3, 2009 Yeah, that's the next thing, to get some music on this thing since we don't have an MP3 hook-up on our stereo. We have the Verizon FIOS Media Manager thing, but it SUCKS. Oh, and I just found Katamari for download.
Vintage Posted October 3, 2009 Posted October 3, 2009 Tell me how the Slim works with heat. My slimmer PS2 overheats alot. And considering that the PS3 puts off a massive amount of heat compared to my PS2 I'm curious as to how it works. That will be my decision maker as to which PS3 to get.
jmicha Posted October 3, 2009 Posted October 3, 2009 ^^Yeah it's really convenient to just have it hooked up to your TV and your stereo via said TV. I use it when I have people over and the visualizer is a nice touch too. It really is the easiest way to get everything out of an entertainment system.
jmicha Posted October 4, 2009 Posted October 4, 2009 ^Lol, that's if you don't like having a system that allows you to interchange the hard drive with any 2.5" SATA hard drive, doesn't allow free internet access, web browsing, easy use of media from other sources, such as music and movies, and plays blu-ray movies. If none of this matters to you, then yes, buy a 360 and have fun with having to replace it countless times. I don't know a single person that owns a 360 that hasn't had to send it in the be fixed. Of all the people I know with PS3s, not a single one of them has had a problem. I myself have had to replace my 360 twice so far in about 2.5 years. My friend Chris is on his fourth in the same amount of time. My friend James was on his second when it broke and hasn't bothered sending it in since he has given up on the system for the time being. The 360 is just a mess of a system and frankly, I like the PS3 game selection better. Obviously that's just personal opinion, but still, I see no benefit to owning a 360 over a PS3 when the PS3 gives you so much more for basically the same price.

Free internet = Crappy Internet, meaning there online play sucks. Sure, You got your blu-ray, But I've had no memory problem with my 360, it's a 20 Gig, and I've had it since 2007, No issues yet. Me and several friends have not replaced a single 360. I think a few people had issues, but who doesn't. If you leave a 360 on for a week, yeah, it'll die, but so will a PS3 and a Wii. 360 a wider game selection, and as I said, Online is much MUCH better. PS3 has what? Kill Zone? Resistance? 360 has the Halo series and the Online on CoD 4-5 and Left 4 Dead is incomparable to the Ps3, and now, it's cheaper to get a decent setup. Ps3's the only system were I've seen an offline game mode LAG. For god sakes, LAG on a offline game. Ridiculous...
jjeerr Posted October 5, 2009 Posted October 5, 2009 L4D (and to a lesser extent Duty, which is as fine/as great/as good/as mediocre on PS3 as 360, depending on how much you like Duty) is PC all the way. XBLA (and community/indie/whatever games) is the reason to get a 360. PSN might have flower and PixelJunk, but XBLA has Ikaruga, Portal, Rez, and Shadow Complex. Jasper 360s shouldn't have any problems, just leave them horizontal. And I could fill a 20GB 360 HD within 48hrs, assuming I don't install disk games to the drive (uhh I think I need to buy a 360 now =( or , I don't really know)
jmicha Posted October 5, 2009 Posted October 5, 2009 ^^No offense, but as I said, game selection is totally opinion. I like PS3's game selection a lot more, and frankly, if the Halo series is in someone's argument for the 360, I can't help but laugh. Bungie has no clue what they're doing in my eyes. Halo 1 is one of my favorite games, then right when I got excited about the series, they managed to make two of the worst games I've ever played. Halo 2 was fun online just because it was so accessible, but other than that, there was nothing going for it. And don't even get me started on the craptacular Halo 3. I've yet to enjoy myself in that game. And I've yet to ever have a problem with PSN. Is it quite as good as XBLA? No, but that doesn't mean it sucks. Sure it'll have a few more hiccups here and there, but for the most part, I've never had a problem. I've never been booted from a game, experienced anymore lag than on my 360, or run into any real connection problems. And free is a heck of a lot better than fifty bucks a year for a (now) broke college student lol. But to each his own. I personally need a lot of memory since I like to put everything media related on it. I'm lazy lol. I don't like having to search for somewhere else to play my movies or music. I just do it all from my PS3. There's currently 312 GB worth of extra stuff on my PS3, and obviously there isn't a 360 hard drive that can support that. And bluray is really important to me as I splurged about a year ago and bought myself an LCD TV and intend to use it to its fullest lol. It really is just a matter of what your intent is for the use of the system and the 360 doesn't even come close to meeting my needs. And honestly, you are very lucky your 360 has lasted that long. I know of a few people that had theirs break in a matter of weeks after buying it and they weren't overusing it either. It's just a sloppy system in terms of quality of construction. It's fun, yes, and if the game choice is superior in your eyes, which I have no doubt it is, then I'm all for someone buying it. But personally, I feel that the PS3 suits what I want out of a video game console a lot more than the 360. In terms of games so far anything I've wanted to buy has either been exclusive to PS3 or has been dual system, so it has been a win-win for me. Oh, and Uncharted 2 is reason enough for someone to get a PS3 if they don't already have one
ernierocker Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 By the way, he already bought the PS3. Okay, now back to your pointless argument.
jmicha Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 ^True, but I'm not trying to argue. My first post was meant to be taken with a slight tone of sarcasm as I really don't care what system other people buy. I'm just discussing why I feel the PS3 is right for me, not trying to argue which is better since it's all a matter of what you want out of a system and which has the more pros for your wants.
FeelTheFORCE Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 How about both systems have their pros and cons? I own both (all 3 actually), but like both the PS3 and 360 pretty much equally. I like the power and massive disc storage capabilities (a la MGS4) of the PS3, and future titles such as God of War 3, GT5, Twisted Metal, etc. But I bought a cheap Xbox 360 Arcade because the 360 is what most of my friends have and use, and Xbox Live is far superior to PSN. Perhaps some features that one person likes, another doesn't really care for. Who cares "which console is better?" I'd rather have a few to choose from than one console that costs like $900. They are both GREAT consoles.
paintballer Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 Ok Argument over. I own all 3 next gen. systems, there all great, I just like 360 better, done and done.
