dammie16@vt.edu Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 I searched around and found out no one had started one of these, how crazy! Just discuss wines here, what do you like? With what food? Where do you do tastings? Last wine you drank? When did you start? How did you get into it? etc! I got into wine in jan. by taking a class called Geog. of Wine at Va. Tech and in town we had a wine shop that did free tastings on Sat.! I personally love a good dry red wine with earthy flavors. The best wine I ever had was a Chianti Reserve from italy. My favorite White was a bottle of Sauternes I got my hands on which was like sex in a glass as far as dessert wines go it will NEVER be beaten lol. I recently just hit up the local vineyard of Paper Moon here in N. Ohio and they had some excellent wines i bought a bottle of Sangiovese that pretty much tasted like dirt and it was awesome! I also bought a bottle of their dry Chardonney because that pretty much goes with anything! Other good wines I have had that rank hi on my list. Garnacha de Fuego - GREAT with tacos Burgundy Red - Don't remember the maker though German Reserve Riesling - Again no Maker sorry! Chateau O'Brien Reserve Vine Merlot from VA. - I was so sad i couldn't buy a bottle! EDIT: ***DO NOT POST ABOUT ILLEGAL UNDERAGE DRINKING*** I should've had that to begin with lol
mcjaco Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 For beer and wine discussion see here:TPR's The last Wine or Beer You've had thread. I'll keep this open (as this is a bit different from the Sticky thread). Perhaps this will get my wife to finally post on TPR! HOWEVER, same rules apply here, if you're under the legal drinking age in your country, DO NOT POST! You will be given a 24 hour time out. We can't condone drinking underage, I'm sure that's understandable.
dammie16@vt.edu Posted August 13, 2009 Author Posted August 13, 2009 Guess we could've left this locked seeing as it didn't really take off lol Anyway just had a taste of a white wine (blind taste) that was amazing but they weren't telling people what it was, which i assume is because it wasn't their product, which they did say after the tasting.
scooterdoug Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 I'd be delighted to add to this conversation! I am personally a fan of new world (e.g. California) wines. I like my Cabernets way oaky. Same with Chardonnays. Back in my college days, I used to host a wine and cheese tasting party once a year. Everyone would donate some money to the cause, and I would buy tons of wine. I would go to a wine store near campus where the owner would pick out about a dozen bottles of wine for me. He was very smart about it, picking wines in pairs. For example, a French Chardonnay and a California Chardonnay, or an Australian Shiraz and a California Syrah. It was a great way to compare and contrast. I would then buy tons of different cheeses (a good triple cream brie was always a favorite), crackers, and cucumbers (slices to cleanse the palate between wines). Everyone would dress up and spend the evening tasting. For living in a place that had a lot of great parties, those annual wine and cheese tasters were my favorite. It was always tremendous fun to experiment with different pairings...simply a delight for the taste buds! Tasting pairings of wine and cheese are one of my great joys of life. If I could taste wine and cheese while riding a coaster, my life would be complete Great topic! Now, let's here from other fellow wine aficionados. Welcome to the wonderful world of wine, dammie16! -Doug "Loves good wine, but also has a soft spot for a good Belgian Ale" Heim
DarkStitch626 Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 Personally some I recently tried that were very pleasant were among white wines that come from Germany. Some like Mosel,Saar, on occasion Ruwer. Every so often I go for a merlot, white zinfandel. Sake is another thing on my "oh my god I MUST have because I love it" list. Ginja or Daiginjo are really great quality.
