dandaman Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 I'm about a half-hour away from downtown and I had no idea there were any confirmed cases in the area, let alone 5. Dan "Refusing to invest in a tinfoil hat just yet" Smith
KnottsDisneyFarm Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 I think swine flu is WAY overrated. More people die every year from regular flu than from swine flu (or so I have been told).
netdvn Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 I posted the links to the stats on the bottom of page 1 and the top of page 2... 1. Mind you the potential threat was it mutated from another animal, not just the human virus mutating. But it still mutated nevertheless... 2. You have to keep in mind that the media struggles for news because everyone is getting information from the internet... they have to blow everything out of proportion to get you to watch. That's the main reason why I don't watch the news anymore. Yellow journalism was soo 100 years ago. If they want to get more viewers, they should focus a bit more on the Internet... And as far as antibacterial soap, I think it was the fact that people were actually washing their hands helped. Normally soap just washes away the germs. It doesn't actually kill them. Antibacterial soap kills the germs, but if you don't wash your hands correctly, it will only kill the weak germs and leave the stronger ones to divide and multiply. As long as you don't abuse it it's perfectly fine, however we live in a world where everything is "overclean" from abusing antibacterial this and antibacterial that... This leads to stronger bacteria, on top of the fact that antibacterial soap doesn't really kill viruses... Dan - We need to stop overcleaning ourselves in order to survive.
spaceace12 Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 2. It was the media creating the chaos, not the government. It would have been different if the government sat on their hands and waited. terry I am going to agree and disagree with you on these two points. Agree on the whole H1N1 mess, but disagree with the media creating hype due to internet for news. In fact, I know for a fact at my station we treat the website as our second (well third if you count our HD radar station). As for being low on news....in my town there is always a meth arrest, conviction, or something else we can plug. I am not sure how it is down in Miami, but that is how it is up here. You want to talk about over hyping a situation.....the weather guy is doign live cut ins instead of taped ones.....we are having a typical Indiana Spring. STrong storms, heavy rain, but no warnings and he is just going like it is really bad, abnormal weather. At some point, he is going to do this to the point of the boy crying wolf syndrome. No one will listen when he does have something breaking to due.
