How to get to Cedar Point from Toronto (Canada)

Hi, everyone, I'm from Spain and I need your help.

 

I'll travel with a friend to Toronto in September. We'll stay there since September 8 to October because we are going to study English. Cedar Point is really near, so we think it's the opportunity to visit it.

 

Cedar Point is about 300 km from Toronto (I don't now how miles). I would want to know which is the best option of transportation to get there without any complication. We'll be obligated to assist to classes, so we'll make the visit any weekend. We'll have time since Friday evening to Sunday night. We want to buy a ticket for 2 days. Does it use to be a lot of attendance in September? Because I want to join all the park!

 

 

And one thing more. As we want to stay two or three days, any recommendation about hotels?

Take the QEW Niagara to Fort Erie/Buffalo and cross at the Peace Bridge.

 

Then take I-190/I-90 all the way to Sandusky. Then US-250 north, and follow the signs for Cedar Point.

 

Should be about a 4-5 hour drive. Though I haven't made the drive from Toronto as I live an hour west.

 

September crowds are pretty light. (other then during Halloweekends).

 

For hotels I suggest Breakers Express.

As inidcated already. You can go Toronto/Buffalo/Erie/Cleveland/Sandusky. The other route is the counter-clockwise route. Toronto/Detroit/Toledo/Sandusky.

 

I prefer the latter route because you are 3 1/2 - 4 hours to Windsor/Detroit and then only 2 hours or so once you are on I-75 south of of Detroit. Growing up in the London, Ontario area it was just over 4 hours to get to the Point.

 

PS. If going the Detroit route, make sure you take the bridge instead of the tunnel.

^ It's probably quicker to go the Buffalo route from Toronto though. Going through Detroit from Toronto involves a bit of back tracking.

 

Although there's probably not a huge difference.

Wow, I live in Toronto, and had no clue Cedar Point was so close to me. I've got to get myself down there!

I live in St. Catharines and I take the Buffalo route. It may take around 4 hours to get there but I always stop in Erie to do some shopping.

We'll probably rent a car. We saw prices and schedules of trains, buses and planes and are so bad and expensive, so we'll go by car. Does anybody know which is the minimum age to rent a car in Canada?

Yeah, car is the only way to go.

 

There is no easy way to bus/train/fly from Toronto to Cedar Point. Well you could fly, but it'd be expensive.

 

Not sure about the age to rent a car. But I think it's either 21 or 25. You'll have to check to be sure though.

Don't forget in January 2008, you will need a passport for re-entry back into the US for all types of travel.

^ That's a good point in general.

 

However the poster who is asking for advice is from Spain, and will be coming to Canada to study English. So he wouldn't get into Canada itself without having a passport.

The minimum age for most rentals is 25. Plus, you'd have to check on where you could drive the car. Most rental companies will not let you drive across the border.

Also FYI: I punched it into Google Maps, and for some reason it suggests the 401-Michigan-Ohio route, not via Buffalo/Erie. I checked off "Avoid Highways", and it showed the route line going straight through Lake Erie.

Now I punched in a different route, and apparently the Buffalo route is a half-hour shorter. However, given Toronto/Buffalo traffic, I'm not even sure anymore which would be better.

Depending on when you go, both routes take about the same amount of time... we've gone both ways [...hehe], and haven't found much difference. It's usually between five and six hours each way.
