thrillrideseeker
Ok I searched and did not find anything like this so I have a question. What is the deal with the brakes on Hypersonic XLC? I mean why do they sound so bad? All the other S&S coasters I have ridden have quiet brakes, so why Hypersoinc? ~Matthew
kraxleRIDAH
My guess is that the BRAKES on Hypersonic are different from the BRAKES on S&S' wooden coasters. I hear the ride BREAKS down a lot -- probably something to do with its poor BRAKES.
CoasterJunkie82
Prototype ride, prototype brakes..... that, and only about 60 or 70 ft to stop.....
Dailey Enterprizes
They should add Dyna braking. It's magnetic... that is if Intamin doesn't sue.

RCoasterny
Actually, it does show the difference between a coaster enthusiast and a wanna-be. The enthusiast calls them brakes while the wanna-be calls them breaks.

bgwfreak
To answer the question... I think they are used to control how fast you go over the top, but I'm not sure. I've never felt them come on, but usually I'm in so much pain and shock at that point I'm not really paying attention. Scrap the stupid thing. Guest
I think as said, it's just because it has such a short stop. The trims on the spike aren't so loud, but the final brakes are killer, so I think they're just set really tight. However, I don't think they're S&S brakes, but PTC rather. The brake seems to be the same design as the PTCs, and other S&S rides have used them as well (Eejanaika). Also, PKD has PTC brakes on Flight Of Fear as well, so that may tie into it some. I do think the ride should have mags, but I doubt they'd put money into it.
bgwfreak
The strangest theory about them I've heard was that they are there in case of a rollback. Uh, wouldn't that be somewhere on the launch section? Why would you stop it on the vertical section of the track.
firstbase11897
Perhaps those would trim off speed if there was a rollback.
Calvin
Scrap the stupid thing. They can't scrap it, it looks like a penis! Perhaps the fact that it's a sort of prototype has something to do with it? And the brakes on the spike are to trim speed in case it launches too fast. Wow, I didn't really contribute anything here.

By the way, the they-can't-take-it-down-it's-a-penis thing is a horrible in-joke having to do with a shrub some guy had on its front lawn. A bunch of people got up-in-arms about it, and this led to jokes about it.
