Whistling Sound?

In alot of wooden coasters, especially when it enteres a turn or helix, there is a whistling sound. What is that sound from?

The wheels screeching along the track.

 

You'll hear it even more when the train is "shuffling".

GhostRider makes that sound when it makes it turn over the station and helix.

Thundercoaster at Tusenfryd sounds awful going through turns in dry weather. You know the sound is bad when passengers arent putting their fingers in their ears during the ride.

I remember Hercules would somtimes make some really bad noises.

Is the noise due to a lack of lubrication? It sure sounds like it. I noticed Ghostrider making some pretty shrill squeaking through the turnaround near the station this past week. I've noticed it on previous trips as well, but not to the same degree. On the flip side, I had one of the better rides that I've ever had on it (right front seat, 2nd car on the silver train). So if the squeaking has anything to do with the ride quality, I'll gladly put up with the noise.
