Hercules
I'll be making a trip to Italy over Spring break. I'll have a day or two to myself, and I was wondering if there are any parks around Rome that I could make a half day, or even day trip to. I've been looking at RCDB and Google Maps, but just can't get the logistics of it all. Thanks!
SharkTums
The three decent parks are barely day trip, and certainly not half day trips away from Rome.
rollermonkey
Luneur is the closest to Rome, but for some reason I never made it there during the two years I lived in Italy. Gardaland is about 2.5 hours (by car) from Rome and is a pretty nice park that does get quite crowded in the summer and on weekends. This park is right on Lago di Garda and is north of Bologna and east of Milano. This park is somewhat accessible by public transportation. Mirabilandia is about the same distance from Rome, but on the east side, just south of Venezia, maybe 45 minutes or so. It is a beautiful park and has more, and better coasters, if that's what you're after. I do not believe that public transportation to this park is a desirable alternative. Have fun, but be sure to see the ABC's! (All the Bloody Cathedrals) Will you be doing much sightseeing outside of Rome?

SharkTums
LOL Yeah Belson...it's a bit farther than that...even if you drive as fast as the Italians! EDIT I actually took the two seconds to check the map to make sure... Rome to Gardaland 540KM ~ 7 Hours Rome to Mirabilandia 355KM ~ 4.5 Hours
DerekRx
I'm wonder what task Belson has on the ship. I certainly hope our country isn't relying on you for GPS estimations on missile launches, nor translations; as you sure do prove you're no expert on that sort of thing! "When I found the Terrorists, I was credit whoring a kiddie coaster like 2 hours East of Baghdad. Fire the missile in that general area." "Oops, I thought that was the Japanese symbol for 'Terrorist Headquarters' not 'Squidball distribution center'"
Carnage
I certainly hope our country isn't relying on you for GPS estimations on missile launches, That would explain bombing the Chinese embassy, and bombing Bulgaria during the Kosovo conflict. rollermonkey
Hey, it has been a few years... Yeah, I used to do 160+ kph on the autostradas... I forgot that the route I used to use doesn't actually get very close to Rome's downtown, and I was driving through the night. I was coming from quite a bit farther south, so by the time I neared Rome, it'd be about 7PM. When driving out of the country, I'd always approach the French or Austrian border about 1AM. My bad, I forgot that most people don't drive Neapolitan style or in the middle of the night. Sorry I underestimated. I never went to either by train though, Italian trains are some of the least reliable in Europe. (Spain's worse in the summer, though.)
Hercules
Alright, thanks a lot guys. These are pretty much the answers that I figured I would get. I guess I will just have to live with going to see the Vatican and crap like that I was kind of hoping to do something really fun over there in terms of coasters though. willski
LOL Yeah Belson...it's a bit farther than that...even if you drive as fast as the Italians! EDIT I actually took the two seconds to check the map to make sure... Rome to Gardaland 540KM ~ 7 Hours Rome to Mirabilandia 355KM ~ 4.5 Hours Geez, those must be some crappy roads or something, because I've gone 350 MILES in that amount of time (4.5 hours). It just depends on how you drive and where you are situated within Rome. If you're on the outskirts of the city (like the airport, except on the other side since the airport is south of Rome), it really shouldn't take that long. We were looking at doing it on our Italy trip and it wouldn't have been much over 3-3.5 hours. Plus, it's almost exactly on the way to Venice, so if you're going that way, it might be a good idea. We ended up flying into Rome and out of Milan though, so that didn't work. Just for those who are conversion-retarded like I am, it's about 210 miles. Also, good luck renting a car in Euope below age 25, it's a huge pain in the ass...
krouvi
I am not sure if the parks are opened during spring break anyway. I was in Rome as a kid 20 years ago and there was a park inside the city, not something impressive but there was a park. If you're considering a trip out of Rome I should say take a train to Capri which is amazing island reall y beautiful , but I have no idea how far is it from Rome. rollermonkey
Hercules, Luneur is a lot closer to Rome, so don't give up hope of getting some coasters in. Capri is down by Naples, maybe 4 hours by car plus city driving in one of the worst cities in the world to drive in, plus the boat ride. Train is probably easier and a tiny bit faster if you get an express.
Hercules
^ Really? Awesome. What do you think it would take to get there?
