Richard Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 For those who don't know, Singapore is a small island at the very southern tip of south east asia. The whole island is taken up by the city of Singapore. The official language is english, due to it being part of the british empire at one point? i think. It's quite a weird place, it's like what would happen in western and eastern culture collided. There arn't any real theme parks there...yet =P but Universal Studios is planning on building it's next park there, on the island of Sentosa, apprently bigger than the Hollywood and Japanese parks. It's a man made island, build as kinda an escape from the city,.It is already set up like a themeparky/day out kinda thing. But atm it's got 2 rides, a skytower and this crazy gravity powered go kart ride! which is amazing, but still, it basically feels like a theme park with no rides yet. Right in the center of the island is a Merlion (half lion, half fish) statue which stands at about 100ft, which is the symbol for Singapore. I hope universal keep it, coz its mega cool. There appears to be alot of construction going on round the island, and a new monorail was just being tested when we were there. But the construction areas were pretty hidden and hard to photograph, and tbh, probably weren't very exciting. There were just masssssiiive cranes, some dirt and abit of concrete. Wikipedia on Universal Studios Singapore Wikipedia on Sentosa Also being built is the Singapore Flyer, it's basically a giant ferris wheel looking over the city. Theres the flyer there, building built. singapore! monkey musical fountains? i think they were called, we just kinda walked past em, they werent very musical =( fountains Carlsberg tower singaporeeee, looks kinda miserable there, bless it from the head RAARRR merlion monorail! monorail! turtle ^.^ volleyball anyone? protect yourself against those UV rays! whoossh you can go REALLY fast on it, or snail pace this is teh cable car that takes you to the top of the Luge (awesome gravity powered go karts!!) Palawan Cranes from the beach Palawan beach
rollermonkey Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 Nice photos, Richard! I love Singapore, except the stifling humidity, that is. Singapore actually has 4 'Official languages' and nearly all signage has all 4: English, Malay, Tamil and Mandarin Sentosa does have some small areas of landfill associated with it, but most of it was natural. Did you check out the old British fort at the western end of the island? There's a lot of history on that little island, mostly due to it's importance as a convergence of shipping lanes. Did you get to check out Escape Theme Park?
stingrock23 Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 I wonder if the Universal Park will have "Caning: the Ride"
metrock Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 Ah this brings back memories. I visited Singapore twice in 2003. I love that place. So much history and so many things to do. The monorail makes getting round the country so easy. I guess it is time for me to get out the pictures I took when I was there. Got some great night pictures of downtown and of the Merlion on Sentosa. It makes me sad to see what they want to do to Sentosa Island. Looking at the plans: The universal park could just about fit without removing any large part of what is curently there. But with the removal of the ferry building, the area where the water/light show is done and everything in between is upsetting. The one thing I love about Sentosa was how different it was from other amusement places I had been. Yeah, it was ghetto in places. But all in all, it was great fun. Loved the Fort on the backside of the park. I will get some of my own pictures up sometime todat if I get around to it.
rollermonkey Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 That water/light show was actually very good. It's been there more than ten years, and it rivals the show at the Bellagio.
Adriel Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 I love the Sentosa Luge ride ( the slide one ). It has thrilling track and you have to control it yourself. It's a but dangerous yes if you don't control. There's no exact track there, it's just a curvy downhill road. And Merlion!! What a great symbol for my country, hehe...
mr_teisco_delrey Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 I wonder if the Universal Park will have "Caning: the Ride" I assume that will be an interactive drama based ride. Seriously, great pictures. I think the two things I love about Singapore are the food circus and all the small islands you can escape to. I really want to go back some day.
MrMorgan Posted January 14, 2007 Posted January 14, 2007 It's funny I should come across your PTR because I just finished watching a 5 part television documentary about the new "Crazy Horse" Cabaret in Singapore. The original Crazy Horse is one of the famous topless show bars in Paris, (like the real Moulin Rouge). They have high class dancing shows with mostly nekked woman... but it's not trashy at all, it's very arty and beautiful, (I mean, of course the girls are all hot as hell, but anyways). Do you happen see the show at the Singapore Crazy Horse?
coasterdude5 Posted January 14, 2007 Posted January 14, 2007 Great TR! It looks like it will be a good location for Universal. The attraction line-up looks impressive.
Richard Posted January 14, 2007 Author Posted January 14, 2007 Do you happen see the show at the Singapore Crazy Horse? Nah i didn't see a show. I did see it! it's down at Clarke Quay where all the fancy clubs are.
MrMorgan Posted January 14, 2007 Posted January 14, 2007 That's too bad. The clips I saw of it looked really cool, (and not just because of the boobies and stuff. hehe.) Then again, I just noticed that you're probably about a year short of being allowed into a place like that anyways. Well, now you'll have something else to look forward to for the next visit besides the new Universal park!
matty_bhoy Posted January 14, 2007 Posted January 14, 2007 Its fun taking that chairlift(mind went blank so can't think of what it's called) to Sentosa island...it's so high up, I think that was the most scared i have EVER been
