The Great Escape (TGE) Discussion Thread

Let stupid people in for almost free, you have to take all the acting-out that comes with it. The park and the rider are at fault, in a way. There is a small exception clause for the girl if she is developmentally disabled. Is this still a Six Flags park? Something about the clientele they attract, and all the stupid things they do... and all the payments we've all had to make over the years because of it. Orange restraints (SFGAd, 1987) with ridiculous "Dolly Parton" grab bars (all Arrow coasters owned by Six Flags); extra seat belts; extra-tight ratcheting lap bars - to the point of pain., Super obnoxious and lengthy loading procedures (but it's ok to them, as they found a way to profit from this over a decade ago with Flash Pass.) And the list goes on. -

I've heard and seen some lame podcasts… But the holiday world podcast is really a lot of fun. It's the only podcast I've stayed subscribed to. -

There is always enough room. See Grona Lund, Blackpool, Liseberg, Indiana Beach... and on and on... -
^The app was interesting to look at, but only one time. I know enough about Six Flags operations to have a healthy level of ... how do you say.. the "desire to ignore it the best I can." Any information retrieved from anything having to do with SF will always change, depending on who you ask. I'm referring to employees, officials, etc. I wish they would someday attempt to match the operational level of a Cedar Fair park.

I would like to ride most other coasters, but can skip out on a few (especially B&Ms) if need be... as I have a notion Viper and Ninja are on a short endangered list. As for Revolution... HUGE Schwarzkopf fan here, and I have a personal history with Revolution. So, I'll take as many rides as I can. Even in July? Does the VR open immediately with the park? Or does the ride open w/o VR? I just need to figure out my game plan to get as many rides (and hopefully re-rides, happy to jump in empty single seats) on Revo. I might take one VR ride if I have the time, but want most of my rides to be non-VR. Also, is there a quick entry to the park? I have a Gold season pass. I saw some of the Six Flags have a "Goodwill" fast entry or similar in place of the former Discovery entrance.

My trip to the park is coming up next month, any change in Revo's operating/VR schedule? I have been hoping they would do VR only for a limited time each day as to enable regular wait times for those who want to ride classic Revolution (like CP with Iron Dragon and SFGAm did with Demon, which worked great!). Revolution, Viper and Ninja are the 3 rides I want to hit the most when I'm there. Been a loooong time... and an even longer time I've waited to ride Revolution without shoulder bars.

Frontier Lift, oh yeah! Who knows... maybe it will return some day. A new model, of course. Maybe a little longer. What a great view of the park that would give, very different from back in the day. Never say never. -

The majority of us coaster geeks have decent hygiene. I have smelled some stinkers though. The thing I notice the most is bad breath and gunked-up teeth. A friend was just in town for a couple days on his way to Holiwood Nights. I gave him an extra roll of dental floss as he was walking out the door, telling him he should give it to someone during ERT. It was kind of a joke, but really, people need to floss. Everyday. And brush. Don't forget to brush the tongue, that's where a lot of that gnarly breath comes from. And really, if your toes are going to be exposed why the heck wouldn't you clip your nails? Ew. Water coaster strangers.. we shouldn't go there. -

Even with a double loading/unloading station, and 6 trains? A 90 degree drop is a gimmick. Steeper really isn't always better. Just sayin... -

^Ha! Well, that's a way to look at it. I was surprised Dorney went with those ratchet lap bars. But I guess I shouldn't be after what they did to High Roller at Valleyfair! Totally unnecessary. Perhaps even less safe under certain circumstances. But they happen to satisfy insurance companies preferences. Some parks are very keen to keep stuff "classic," or as classic as they can (SFOG has the headrests and dividers, but retains buzz bars on GASM). I was hoping Cedar Fair would do that with their older rides. They can always go backwards! Speaking of backwards, what if the (new?) RMC trains for Thundering Brown Streak has backwards seats like that new MACK going in Australia!? Just brainstorming. -

Blue Streak on a wheel seat. That was something you didn't have to concern yourself with before all the extra hardware on PTC trains (most of that started mid-90s). More reason to cherish the very few true classic wood coasters we have, with old-style seating/restraints. People do stupid things and it ruins (part of) the fun for everyone else. Individual lap bars and associated assemblies - 200lb per bench, headrests with 40lb metal cores, I doubt the seat dividers add much weight. Every wood coaster that had that change-over has suffered in recent years from wheel seat syndrome. Don't get me wrong, former classics could get rough wheel seats, but it's much worse now. It really changes the entire feel of the ride. Just look at all the extra support, mid-bents, etc. that have been put in place on every single woodie that changed over to those ratchet bars. Dorney at Thunderhawk will start getting all that extra wood over the next couple years. And any roughness of the former trains will increase with these new heavier trains (the bulk of the weight, as mentioned, is in those individual lap bar assemblies. I know it didn't get the volvo headrests.) Ho-hum. Sorry guys. Venting done. Anyway, howbout that new Ghost Streak! I'm curious to see who thinks it will get extra laps with a mid-course (formerly end of course on Mean Streak) launch. How about a huge "stall" like Goliath over the entrance way!? Metal arches, of course. Didn't someone see concrete trucks going back there? Longest record of any coaster... now THAT would be a good brag. -

I've heard Lakeside in Denver (a true gem!) doesn't like pictures taken inside the park. I took pictures when I was there years ago with no problem, but was not aware of the policy at the time. -

Got to the park for the first time this year. Yesterday from about 3:30 to 7 (closing time). The new (half-length) coaster is a lot of fun! I was pleasantly surprised with both "sides." I laughed my ass off most of the ride. It did get my "boy parts" a bit once, though. It's a nice sampler of what this ride type can really do. It's like a cute little "test track," if you will... a sampling of a classic Zipper ride. I could see one of these at Cedar Point in the future, but with a 3 times longer track, and perhaps 2 parallel tracks for capacity's sake. Also rode: Logger's Run - awesome and excellent as ever! So grateful we still have our classic flumes. Even when Clipper is closed :/ Batman - always fun Little Dipper - still love it, all these years later. American Eagle - wow, I haven't seen the ride look this great since the mid-80s. Only the first hill has recieved the paint job so far. Drop - I guess VR is done. Got a great view of Eagle's new paint job. Demon - best seat on the train, 2nd to back. Still love my first looper. Raging Bull - after years of dogging this ride, I have really warmed up to it. Especailly after riding so many super-repetitive B&M (up/down/up/down/up/down) near clones all over North America. We really have a unique layout here. Put a sock in it about the brake on hill #3. Uniqueness wins. Whizzer - 2 rides, back car. What a way to end a nice short visit. Once again (after many years of changing taste and stuff) my favorite ride in the park. A true gem.

I also heard the Discover card contract ended. I have a SF season pass. I think it's a Gold pass, but they change stuff so often (to better confuse people?) so I really don't know what constitutes a Gold SF season pass anymore. I have parking with my pass and it's good the entire year, that's all I know. Would that be a Gold Pass? I would ask someone at my local SF park, or email/call them, but I will get a different answer from every employee I ask. Sad but true.

I'm planning an attack for my July trip to Magic Mountain. Is there a fast entry method in 2017? I will be there for 2 days, Monday and Tuesday in July. Up until last year, my home SF park and other SFs had the special Discover entrance. I didn't take advantage of that, but if SFMM offers something this year, I would do it as I want to make the most out of my trip. I thought about getting a Platinum Flash Pass, but that won't get me on Revolution. Which is the main reason I'm going to the park. I'm not too concerned with other stuff, but I would like to get on Ninja and Viper, as I've heard they are on the endangered list. I haven't been to the park in years. I don't care about Scream or Batman. And the other stuff will be there for a long, long time. No rush to get on most of those. And I know July isn't the best time to visit... any thoughts or suggestions? (Other than not going, of course. I will plan a trip next year as well, at a better time to visit.)
