Six Flags Discovery Kingdom Updates
Double0Kevin replied to Zonga's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
How was it held in place?! He's right, Zonga was not secured to the ground. I operated the ride for the 2 years it ran at SFDK. It simply sat on small wood/rubber pads. It stayed in place because the mass of the ride compared to the small size of the trains really didn't push on it at all. And I don't want to sound like a snob on this one... but THBS at SFDK is NOT a portable coaster. It is referred to as a Modular coaster meaning that it is assembled on a base frame rather than concrete footers. The ride is still bolted together and wired as a permanent fixture. Zonga was a portable coaster because of how it was built, the supports slid into each other and were secured with a bolt held on by a cotter pin. THBS's supports are bolted(multiple bolts with nuts) together. -
Said the SFDK employee. There's no bias at all in your opinion. Personally, I don't really think either park is all that great. They're both average parks to me. I'll keep visiting them to get the new credits, and have never had a bad day at either park, but there is nothing at either park that wows me either. What bias is there? I wasn't really nay-saying CGA, just annoyed how people point out faults in a park to make their favorite better. I'd say my favorite park is Holiday World, I'm not going to talk about how much I hate SFKK and how much they suck... I would rather talk about the plus side of HW. But back on subject, SFDK has made some great improvements the past couple years and so has CGA. Really what it comes down to is how you feel. Do you want Animals, Shows and Rides in SFDK or Water Park, and more of a rides driven park in CGA

I'm gonna be out in the Houston area this week visiting a friend. We're making a trip to San Antonio one day but sadly no SFFT or SW for me... for obvious reasons. But I was curious if anyone knew if Boardwalk Bullet is going to be operating? The website doesn't say anything except it may not be operating off and on during the winter. Thanks for any help from the locals.

Holiday in the Park
Double0Kevin replied to Zonga's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
So back to the actual topic(i know paint is amazing and all) Has anyone been to holiday in the park? What did you think? I personally enjoy the event. Nice to see the park open this time of year. The tree is amazing. The number of rides down sucks and all but the entertainment it awesome. You can literally start at 5pm and watch a different show every half hour all the way to 9... and then you have the parade at 930 which is short but cute. Not to mention the light all over and the rides that are still open. Kong may be an SLC but it's one of the smoother and enjoyable ones(if that's possible) and boomerang is not a bad coaster either. Plus they have a santa ride in the 4D Theater and what not. All around an enjoyable event that i look forward to seeing grow over the years. -
Holiday in the Park

Look for Medusa to be open weekends. Not sure if that includes fridays, but saturday and sunday you can still get your floorless thrill on. -
Your favorite/best looking park entrance!
Double0Kevin replied to zingo's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I'm a fan of the Discovery Kingdom entrance. -
I can't say for papa johns cause i've never paid attention. But the Cold Stone at SFDK seems to be very clean and the line is fairly fast paced. They seem to have put the best employees there. Then again i'm being biased with SFDK as this year all their employees seems 10 times better, SFMM has always disappointed me in every aspect

I'm sure those foundations are for the same billboards SFDK has been getting all over the place. Having worked at the JR in Cedar Point, that JR is horrible, kills the whole atmosphere and appeal of JR. Johnny Rockets doesn't have the best food in the world, but the service and look of the restraunts is what people like about it. SFMM's JR is nothing more than sh*tty food with your typical SF food services employees that are in no way similar to what we see in KBF or CP's restraunts.

Park is smart this year about Holiday in the Park... you noticed that in the news article but it's no where on the website... the calander even says they are closed. They won't announce that till late in the season so they don't have a repeat of last year where everyone buys Season Passes expecting to go to it and it gets canceled at the end of summer for unknown reasons. I think the changes are great. I have a feeling that they aren't done yet... I expect more announcments to come about new attractions within the park before opening day.

Downtown DCA?
Double0Kevin replied to speedracer's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I wouldn't say DCA is neither a mess, nor hopeless. Sure it doesn't stack up to Disneyland... did any of you honestly expect it to? Give it time and I'm sure the park can improve... hell, look at Epcot. As for the DD expansion... why? Spend all this time marketing the Resort as having 2 parks and then all the sudden it's down to 1 again? Seems like there is more money to be made by having it remain a park and just improving it. Wasn't DL considered a failure at first too? -
Skycoasters - Question about them.....
Double0Kevin replied to nihtro's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Yeah, being a Site Controller kinda ruined the ride for me. I've been on them enough times to just not care anymore. Skycoasters are all built by the same company, they have 3 models. Lattice Arch(the kind you see at Paramount parks, CP, SFMM, etc), A-Frame(single flight line, like the Kissimmee skycoaster) and finally the Dual A-Frame(an A frame with 2 flight lines). They also have 2 loading styles, The Rolling Flight Boarding Platform(did i say that right?) and the Scissor Lift(there is a 5ft and 10ft version of these). Hope that clears up any questions on Skycoasters. -

Photo Trip Report: Six Flags Marine World

too bad ya aren't going. Contrary to popular belief... SFMW is a hell of a lot better than PGA. Sure they have the most intense kids rides in the world, but that's all they have... you can't really call their stuff Thrill Rides. V2, Medusa, Roar, Taz Devil, Hammerhead Shark and VooDoo are way more thrilling than anything PGA has to offer... Hell, the Zonga concrete pad is more exciting than great america's rides. BTW, check ALL Six Flags parks guys... All top spins in the chain are required to run that program. So don't get on MW's case like they are the only one. I just watch SFGAm's run the same program a month ago.

Zonga, Thriller, Taz
Double0Kevin replied to buttonman700's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I operated the ride both years it operated at Six Flags Marine Worlda as Zonga. We had some die hard fans that rode the ride over and over with no complaints, but the majority of people would get off saying it was too bumpy. However you would see the people who complained ride the ride mulitple times. Zonga was also one of the only rides in the park that had a consistant line all day everyday. I personally wish the park didn't remove it, i always thought it was fun, just a little rough in certain sections. -
SFMW pass price hike
Double0Kevin replied to shepp's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Dude, i get that you want coasters, but SFMW is part of the SF chain and i would seriously doubt that they would be "special" cause they aren't owned by the park. And here is an interesting tidbit of information... All the rides, attractions, and animals ARE owned by(or in some animal's cases leased to) six flags. So if SF doesn't buy the park and moves out, they either get to take most everything in the park, OR they get to sell that stuff. Sure the city owns the land... but that is about it. Vallejo has no say in day to day operation let alone park expansions. They just get a check from SF every year. I understand your upset and would love to see new coasters in the park (as would i), but you have to realize how very unlikly it is for the park to get one any time soon. SF will start adding coasters to their parks again... but i doubt that will be withing the next 5 to 10 years. And SF gets to keep most the profit the park makes, so MW infact does help reduce the dept. And SFMW was one of the few parks that saw a signifigant profit last season, i doubt they would let that go.
