I agree, Medusa seems to be by far one of the best aged Floorless coasters. Every other floorless I've ridden was pretty tough (I don't even bother riding Scream) but Medusa still runs as if it's new. I would also include entering and exiting the block brakes. It's not always apparent but on warm summer days it definitely throws it in there. When I would ride for morning test rides I didn't always get it because the wheels were pretty cold, but if I hopped on in the afternoon it was always noticeable. As far as everyone talking about Superman's small station, they are reusing the Tony Hawk station (just in a new location). So that should give you an idea of the size.

I was referring to the smaller ones as well. Those got trashed almost immediately, only the T-Rex lasted for a while before it was toss (I think) too. SFDK has a little museum of their own in Explorer Outpost but it was never heavily advertised and I think it's mostly just pictures. P.S.... Thanks, I operated it both years it was at the park and was pretty fond of that thing.

Weirdest Things The 'GP' Have Said
Double0Kevin replied to maliboomer's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
When I was working at SFDK management decided to soft close the park on Fourth of July one year because the park was still so crowded. A guest asked me why rides were still running and I explained that the park would be open until 11pm rather than the scheduled 10. He complained that it was stupid and that Disneyland would never stay open longer. They would close when the said they would. I was honestly speechless, how do you respond to someone complaining about getting extra time for free? -
I haven't been in that building for years, but as it is, I don't think it's big enough. However, the space itself with the outdoor queue where all the dinosaurs were would be big enough. I'm not a huge fan of dark rides, but I think it'd be super cool to have one of those coasters that are partially indoors, partially outdoors with good theming. Speaking of dinosaurs BTW... are all of those long-since trashed, or are they still around in storage somewhere? Also, I was looking on the SFDK Facebook page, and I couldn't find the post with the pic of Pandemonium deconstruction. Do you think they took it off the site because too many GP complaints? IWerks is definitely big enough for a small Dark ride, but would require some pretty extensive work to accommodate it. Also, though the park has made strides in quality over the past few years, I don't think they would be able to sustain a dark ride and it would likely fall into disrepair pretty quickly. Those dinos are long since trashed. The T-Rex sat in the area where the warehouses are for a long time but was in awful shape, I think they eventually tossed it. I also noticed the picture was gone, the only thing I could guess is that the photo was taken from the lift hill. Maybe there was something against being up on a structure that's being disassembled? The park's safety manager is pretty anal and may have had issues with that, but I honestly am only speculating on this.

TPR Front Page RE-Design Contest!
Double0Kevin replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Personally, I can't stand drop downs. They are temperamental and always like to pop up when you don't intend for them to. I also recall Robb saying less text and more visual. I totally agree with this. TPR's design has always worked, but wasn't always visually pleasing. Need to get rid of the clutter. So far everyone seems to just be rearranging what is already there rather than making something new. Just my 2 cents. -
TPR Front Page RE-Design Contest!
Double0Kevin replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I think by far this is the best design, but my only peeve is the text. Why do the updates need the full date above them and a description below? I think it would look much more clean if the pictures filled all that space and then you had the text bar with a brief description over the top, similar to how the "A Final Look at Jaws" looks, with maybe a small date (A Final Look at Jaws - 1/10). -
Hersheypark (HP) Discussion Thread
Double0Kevin replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I honestly was originally kind of disappointed with the simple figure 8 track layout but now looking at it, it looks like it will be a great ride. -
I was the supervisor of all the rides in Roar Plaza that first year. Those rides were closed in 2007 because of rehabs. The park had to close some major attractions because they hadn't prepared throughout the year for long operation like that. HIP wasn't even official until the season began that year. Roar needed track work and V2's train takes longest to rehab in the park. If they operated both through HiP, those rides wouldn't have been ready for the first couple months of 2008. 2008 (and I think 09 and 2010) had V2 and Roar open because the park prepared throughout the year for extended operation. In regards to Pandemonium construction, Pandemonium pieces didn't even start arriving at the park until February of 2008, well after HIP was over. Also the area they are building Superman has plenty of spare room to store the pieces on site and not have to transport them from a backstage area.

Technically no coaster is in "Land" or "Sea" All coasters are in "Sky" so this is right where it needs to be regardless of where it is. It was always kind of a poorly thought out idea that really should have excluded "Sky" all together and made half the park "Land" and half "Sea" and themed it like that. Also, the park has enough happy family attractions, it's one of the few SF parks that really is family friendly. I think it's great they are finally adding a new thrill. It's been 8 years since they built Zonga(and 6 very sad years since it operated). I agree, though I've always thought it's funny that all the rides that have an animal theme, the park doesn't actually have those animals. I actually think the GP will respond better to a name like Superman than if it had a name themed to the park. Zonga never really caught on but Tony Hawk packed em in. Same for the kids lands, no one really cared about Tava's Jungleland but everyone loved Thomas Town.
-
I'm kind of sad that this will be the first coaster on the Zonga pad that I WON'T be operating. Looks like a lot of fun though. I'm curious if it will end up like V2. A lot of craze at first and then not a whole lot of attention afterward. As for the name, I agree with most of you that Superman is out of place... but then I remember that I could care less about the name. It's not like I ride Medusa and get upset that there is no giant Snake lady.. I go to Six Flags for the coasters, plain and simple. If I want theme and dependence on a name I head to Disney. I think this one is really the ride to watch for 2012 in regards to Six Flags rides. Everything else has been done. This one was definitely the big surprise.

Cedar Point (CP) Discussion Thread
Double0Kevin replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I'm in no way sad to see Paddlewheel go. When i worked there for the summer of '05 I never even knew it existed. Went back in '06 for a visit and was still oblivious to it's existence. It wasn't until I took another trip in '08 that I stumbled upon it while taking pictures of TTD and remember thinking it was a giant waste of time. I'm not one to bash on rides like this, typically I love when parks do stuff like this but it just felt like a cheap rip off of Jungle Cruise with worse jokes and less to look at. I think cutting the maintenance and operating costs of the ride and using that elsewhere is a smart move by CP. I like the DA idea. SFDK had an exhibit like this called "Dinosaurs!" back in the early 1990's when they were still Marine World Africa USA. It was located on the hill where the 3D cinema, Taz Devil and Johnny Rockets are now. I remember it being a really fun exhibit and really made my day. I think I was 5 at the time which is exactly the demographic this one will appeal to as well. But I tell you what, if they had charged for the one at SFDK, there is no way my mom would have gotten out of it. -

It sucks that you had a bad day, but did the TPR Forums just become MiceChat? -
You mean like all those drop towers, coasters, bridges, insane buildings and other insanity that exists in Japan, an even more active seismic area? It's like I always say, and parks ALWAYS agree with me...if they wanted to build something, they'll figure out a way.... Plus, Steel rides fair pretty well in earthquakes because they flex a lot. I would imagine a big vertical pole would sway a lot in a quake and come out of it with no, or next to no issues. That wouldn't be a very tough ride to place, and like Robb said, if they want to do it... they will find a way and do it.

3 Epic California Parks, One Week!
Double0Kevin replied to MrSum1_55's topic in Photo Trip Report Archive
Ya know, I've never thought about that. I bet they have to do one train, then park that on the second lift to get the clearance and and do the second train, or Jaguar might be able to make it from the get go, cause of it's design. Cobra isn't exactly quick, even when it's all warmed up and full of people. -

I'm not hating on StarFlyers here as I have yet to ride one, but the Windseeker rides just look so much better to me. I'm talking the actual look of the ride. I'm not sure how to describe it, but they just look more bad ass to me. I kinda wish they had some decoration on the hub though, that is one place the StarFlyers win in my opinion. Can't wait to get on my first StarFlyer this summer (SFDK) and my first Windseeker (Knott's... if they ever build it). -
3 Epic California Parks, One Week!
Double0Kevin replied to MrSum1_55's topic in Photo Trip Report Archive
They weren't doing that to Cobra for fun. Because the train is so long and moves so slow that is how they warm the bearings in the wheels. It has to roll a certain amount out of the back of the station before you know the wheels are warm enough to get the train all the way around. When it's cold it takes ridiculously long, I'm talking 20 to 30 minutes. It's pretty hard not to suck at Hammerhead. Since that thing is a prototype that have an annoying amount of steps you have to do just to insure the restraints are locked and if you do one thing out of order the ride errors. Plus it's supposed to be a 2 op ride but since Six Flags loves budget cuts, they cut the 2nd op position almost 10 years ago and only sometimes use it on extremely busy days like 4th of July. Just throwin in my useless knowledge of that park. Good to see the employee quality is about the same as when I left when it comes to the whole camera on boomerang thing and the Roar throw-up. Some things will never change. Great pictures, at least that park has it's looks going for it. Haha. -
PhotoTR:Old Magic Mountain pictures
Double0Kevin replied to thrillrider's topic in Photo Trip Report Archive
Haha, I agree with Robb, I thought these were super old pictures and then I saw the pic of Deja Vu next to Psyclone and was like "Oh." I think Psyclone was a completely aweful ride, and you all know you agreed with this at one point. I just think it was really to blame on those trains though. Had they gotten some PTC trains it may have ridden more like Viper at SFGAm. I remeber my first trip to SFGAm I avoided Viper cause it was like Psyclone but I sucked it up and rode the following year and it is still one of my favorite wooden coasters. Back on subject, awesome pics. I love looking at pics from only a few to 10 years back because you can see how much has changed in such a short time. -
New TPR Header Logo...
Double0Kevin replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I can't say I'm honestly a fan. But for the sake of progress, I like that you are showing the logo some love instead of just leaving it the same forever. Maybe if you darken up the Green (even more than the test one you posted above) and just slightly darkened the red it would be a little more pleasing on the eyes. I guess my biggest issue is that I've always considered TPR's colors to be Green, Red, Blue and Yellow... But the first three always had their spot in the logo and the yellow was always the regular text... It almost feels like the yellow is taking over. Whatever you guys all decide won't change my opinion of the site though... and I think that's what really matters. -
The 3D theater was never an upcharge attraction, and they stopped using it because of maintenance and operating costs when Mark Shapiro went on his cost cutting rampage. Also Zonga opened in 2003, not 2004 and operated much more than just 3-4 months. Believe me, I know, I operated it most of the 2 years it was at the park. As for the coaster plans, we will see. SFDK has prepared for coasters before and never got them (the B&M flyer most of you never knew about that was canceled by Mark Shapiro in favor of the name change in 2007).

In California the holiday thing is only required for full time employees or union employees that have negotiated it(or companies that are willing to pay it like at Disneyland). And also six flags isn't required to pay it cause they are considered an entertainment venue and it's not outside of normal operation to be open on holidays. But when it comes to Christmas eve and day, six flags just doesn't get the attendance to justify it. Also, with the lack of holiday pay, you get a lot of call-ins from employees on those days who just don't care enough to go to work. Those were reasons for SFDK being closed on those two days back when I was there at least.

Great TR! DLP is a resort I would love to visit. It's got such a similar story to the original Disneyland, rough start but grew into a great place. I also love their castle. Glad you missed that snow storm that just shut them down! P.S. Is it just me or is it really weird to see the exact same Tower of Terror as DCA sitting their with different surroundings? Other Disney clones tend to have variations that make them unique but this one is dead on.
