Holiday World (HW) Discussion Thread
tykunkel1031 replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I wouldn't think that it would. Especially considering that it was a water ride, not even a coaster. A small park like HW would be more likely than for sure CF and most likely SF, I agree to add some kind of mega lite. The only problem is that this ride is obviously going to be the new star attraction. I feel like they're going to end up with lots of angry guests when/if the ride is down for the majority of the day. This explains why Thunderbird has generators. If flywheels fail, those are there to pick it right back up, with no downtime. Just because of that, I'm thinking more against them adding a mega lite. Holiday World is extremely smart with their investments, and I feel like they wouldn't want to risk this one. Not yet at least... -

That sounds pretty good too. I really wish their Intamin relationship wasn't jacked up. A Maverick in the woods is the definition of perfection. I guess Mack could possibly pull that off... -

Oh, I see. Well ya learn something every day. I guess I would say that that shows that they're stable, financially, to be able to add rides close together like that. I honestly don't think it'll be any longer than 2019 until a new coaster of some type comes. I agree about a Fury kind of hyper. Can you imagine something like that but then out in the woods? I actually would rather have a flyer or invert, though. The park has one coaster with inversions. I feel that would balance it a bit more. Then maybe the park could take the RMC train. It's kinda sad to think that this is all like 10 years away though. -

Hopefully so. I'd love to see a refurb of the Fourth of July section. It has that old American feel, but not exactly in a good way. Tons of cracked pavement, and just seems a bit old. They could probably somehow theme a spinner to Fourth of July. As much as I'd love a wild, huge spinner, it wouldn't be necessary I don't think. That, and it would save them money, keeping it short and sweet. I could see a hyper but it also really resembles Voyage in those first three hills. Although afterwards, it would obviously be a VERY different ride. I'd love a massive flyer. It'd be really cool if they would put it in the Pilgrim's Plunge spot, having the lift run over the Thunderbird hill. Lots of daydreaming in my head right now -

That's true. But the reason that there was such a big gap was the whole lawsuit. There was originally an invert planned for the park, but those got scrapped in the middle of the lawsuit. I can see maybe a couple of years of family-type improvements. Like possibly updating Holidog's Funtown/expanding it. I feel that that would balance it out a bit more. Or (hopefully) they would add something on that GIANT hike to Thunderbird. -

^ I would think so as well. I know that they made a small fortune from Thunderbird. They had such an attendance increase that they had to hire more people midway through the season. Hopefully we'll be seeing something awesome like a huge flyer or invert or something. Or 100% topper track Voyage. Can you imagine? -

I have a friend who works at the park. He said that when he got hired, he was with a bunch of other new employees and "one of the people who hired us" came in and said "I know what the new ride is next year! But can't tell you all!" So, I'm assuming it'll be something. However, I'm picturing a water park addition. It's been a bit since they've put anything in there. Although what I REALLY want is Topper Track Voyage. I love it's layout so much. It's just so rough, especially later in the year. I can't wait for a new coaster, though! I'm hoping for a B&M invert or hyper. I'm not too sure where they'd put them, but oh well. Anyway, enough daydreaming about something that's not coming for a long time -

I personally love the in line rolls on both. I think they're great finales to both. I just happen to love the hang time it gives. I like Thunderbird's slightly better for its very unique/weird lateral feeling too. It just comes down to personal preference. Also, did you ride Vortex with your head stuck out? I've found that as the best way to avoid the neck chopping (for my height) that they give with those odd restraints. lol. I've found it to be lightyears better that way. It's still a rough ride and it sounds like a shopping cart slamming into that MCBR but that does make the ride slightly better IMO. -
^ LMAO! Really though, PETA is so obviously in it for money. I'm sure they started out with good intentions, but at this point, those are out the window. They're destroying businesses that are obviously making a change (for what they want!). It's been a very short amount of time, considering an Orca lifespan, for them to be able to announce ending Orca shows. I'm an animal lover myself, but PETA just is constantly so extra

I was out of the loop during construction of Thunderbird. What system does it use for its launch? LSM powered by a flywheel. It would've been drawing too much power at once, so they decided to use the flywheels to just be able to slowly charge up for the launch. They have one big generator (last year it was 2 further down the hill) there as back up systems in case the flywheels were to fail. I think this is mainly because it's the star attraction. They can't really afford for it to go down, or they'll have plenty of angry guests in the park, since it's the only steel coaster there. Backup systems don't constantly run and emit smoke like that. They were using it as a primary draw last year. You could see the engines belch smoke when the trains would take off. Yes but that was last year. As of this year, the flywheels are constantly running. I have yet to see the generator be used. Glad to hear LR is finally open though! Hopefully the problems are fixed for at least a few weeks now! -

Just to add fuel to the fire, I like coaster studios. I don't get why some people are such pricks about his videos. No one snaps on half the people on this site (who are far worse) like they do on him. He's just making videos of his opinions. Jesus people, show a little kindness and respect. You know you wouldn't say most of this stuff to his face. I'm not trying to moderate or be in charge or whatever, but just think of what you would and wouldn't say to his face. Anyway, back to that 1847203 foot inverted aquatrax RMC B&M with a 13859 mph launch that will be coming next year... -

Screw that, those are for peasants. Gold VIP Tour is the only way to fly in style. They are only $450 per person per day. Shhhhhh, don't say "VIP Tour" . . . You'll awaken them. Apparently I am the only person on here that does VIP Tours at theme parks. When I posted about my first tour, and suggested others take VIP Tours a bunch of people got butt hurt because apparently "not everyone can afford a VIP Tour." So now I just refrain from talking about them. Sent from my cellular wireless device. I hate people If you like them, DO THEM! Who cares what they think about it. I really don't get some people. Just because you can't afford it doesn't mean other people aren't allowed. I'd LOVE to see you take a tour and then post some pics. -

I really doubt (IF RMC would be doing anything), that they would call it ___ Hawk, ___ streak, etc. I feel like that's a bit more 2007ish Cedar Fair. Like Firehawk, Nighthawk, etc. I think it'll be something totally weird and unpredictable (and unpronounceable). They've been very unique with names for coasters as of recently. Take Valravn and Rougarou, for example. Those are totally unique. Even Gatekeeper and Maverick would be, too. -
^^ This. You can't sit like its a seat, you have to stand. It should barely be touching you. If you sit on it, expect to never have kids again. In the end, your legs should hurt more from standing up than your crotch. Also, try your best giraffe impression and stick your head out in front of the restraint. This obviously prevents headbanging. Good luck! Let us know how it goes.

I didn't actually hate this ride! It didn't headbang or anything. Probably because I kept my head forward. But either way, I didn't find it rough really or anything. Just painfully on the legs, but that's all stand ups. Nice report. If you get a chance to go back check out Kingda Ka row one. It's worth the extra wait time. Thank you! I doubt I'll get the chance to go back, but I might be going back to CP soon, so I could ride front of dragster. Those rockets are some of the only coasters that legitimately scare me. I can't even imagine what it would be like in the front then. You're making me regret it for real now.

Thanks for all the kind comments, everyone! I had a 13 hour ride home from NYC, so why not yanno write a bible-sized story? I didn't actually hate this ride! It didn't headbang or anything. Thunderbird op here. It was used last Saturday, but not filled completely. It is used more often than you'd think. The main room has filled up in the morning most days this month, with the wagon room occasionally filled on busier days. Woah what's your name?! I'll look for you next time I'm there! -

Season pass night 2015. The definition of hell. The line went down around the corner of Crow's Nest with all switchbacks filled. This took about 2.5 hours. Boy was that a pain, especially when they alternated between one and two trains and cleaned up 4 vomit comets. It was a night ride and mind blowing, however. I may or may not have been a bit delirious from that wait too -
Trip report! This is my first real TR, so don't judge too hard If you go back a couple of pages, you'll see my whole rough experience, live I still loved the park, however! So we got there, on the first day, at about 1:00, and it was 1000000 degrees outside. Both of my sisters ended up with giant stomach aches and were light headed due to the mix of crazy heat, not enough water, and riding things. I even got a nice stomach ache after eating. So there's the prologue, but now the actual story! So we first got there, and we decided to try and buy flash pass to make sure we got everything in before the soon-incoming storms. Yeah, major bust, but more about that later. We reserved Kingda Ka with a 1.5 hour wait while we went on other things. So, we went straight to El Toro. The park was very dead today, except for that wild Kingda Ka wait, and Superman (why we decided to go for a Flash Pass), so El Toro was a one train wait. This turned into 10 minutes because of, I kid you not, 4 walks of shame in one train. So that took a while, but the ops were still doing a good job dispatching on good intervals (as I watched from other parts of the park). But wow, this ride is good. I'd say it cracked my top 10, but I'm not exactly sure where yet. I'll have to give it some thought. The air is crazy, especially in the back, where I rode. You know it's some good airtime when you come off with marks on your thighs from the restraint. Only thing though, it wasn't as smooth as everyone raves about. Yeah it was nothing like Voyage or something, but there was more roughness than I was anticipating. Either way, probably second smoothest woodie I've ridden, behind Lightning Racer. Awesome ride, 9/10. Then, we went to Bizarro. Nothing out of this world, but definitely a very fun ride. Of course the mist effects weren't working in the blazing heat Ok but let's take a second to remember this crew… They were soooooo dead! I'd say 4 minute dispatches or so. Not the worst, but the real problem was their expression. They all looked like zombies. This was probably due to the heat, but I've never seen someone look so miserable before. Anyway, I give this ride a 7.5/10 After this, we took a break on the log flume. Fun, just like any flume you'd expect. I liked how theirs was almost all elevated, very interesting. Here, we were going to try to go to Ka with our flash pass, but surprise surprise, it was down. So, they just gave us a free front of line pass for Ka! We didn't get to use this, though, as it didn't open again Next, we went to Nitro. Man this thing is impressive. I was completely greyed out for the majority of the helix and the first bunny hop. Probably because of the heat, but definitely more intense than Diamondback for positive forces. I still like Diamondback a bit better, just because I'm more of a fan of more airtime, and the helix made me nauseous. The airtime was very good, though. Especially in the back row on the first drop. Definitely a good ride, probably top 25 or so. 8.5/10 Here, it started raining, so we ran to Dark Knight. Nothing special, but definitely good theming especially for SF. I agree with my mom, she said they did so good on the queue, but practically gave up on the ride (theming-wise). At the end of the day, it's still a wild mouse. 5/10 Here was where we did Skull Mountain. I was expecting to be able to ride it again; there was no line. So I just went for a no-wait middle seat. Of course, we go around to the entrance, and it's closed! I'll rate the ride in the day 2 section, from the back seat Here's where things went downhill for this day. I'll just let you look back a couple pages back to see that story Day 2: If you haven't read the previous pages of this thread, we got rain check tickets to come back the next day! Awesome! This time around, we got there at about 10:00. We went right to Joker, and it wasn't open yet. We decided to try to wait for it to open. Well we waited 15 minutes, which was enough time for everyone to go to other rides. Then, an op came out and said they didn't know when/if it would open. We decided to just forget about it, as I'd rather get on Kingda Ka than Joker. So, I went there alone (the rest of my group wimped out ). I got in line, and man this line looked huge. I sat there for about 5 minutes in the massive switchbacks, when everyone moved up. We ironically moved right to the station. I went for second row, as the front row line was GIANT. I waited another once I first hit the station. Zumanjaro (butchered spelling I'm sure) really does wreck capacity here. They were doing a great job of getting trains out very quick. There was always one siting ready to be launched. There's just nothing they could do. I could see how this could become a people eater if they used both ends and sides of the station (which they did neither of), but man that wait for Zum takes forever. On to the ride. Woah. These accelerators are mind blowing. While I liked this, I still prefer TTD. The people saying the launch is rough, you're correct. It's not exactly rough but rather shaky, like the track is just bent or something. I don't get how a ride can shuffle like that on a straight track, but whatever. I did also feel that launch wasn't as consistent, it kind of gave tugs multiple times. Solid ride, but Cedar Fair/Point wins here 7.5/10 Afterwards, we went to Green Lantern. Hold your weapons, but I actually liked this ride. I was expecting incredible pain, but I didn't think it was bad at all. I rode row 2 and it was actually pretty fun. I've found with any OTSR coasters, whether it be Arrow, B&M, Vekoma, anyone, stick your head out. It won't box your ears this way. It does hurt your legs pretty bad, though. I actually liked it more than Riddler at SFMM. 7/10. From here, we hopped over to Batman. Intense as ever. I liked this a bit more than the SFMM version, not sure why. I am amazed that B&M can build and keep rides so smooth for so long. 8/10 We went to Skull Mountain at this point. Decent theming, for SF at least. Thank you coasterbill, for telling me the back seat! OMG EJECTOR! I rode with my 9 year old sister, and she said was close to standing up! 100000000000/10 Here, we went to go check on Superman, as that was closed too at the beginning of the day. We saw Joker open! We hopped right in line and waited about 30 minutes. Awesome addition. Nothing mind blowing, but coming over the lift, knowing you'll be spinning wild, is actually pretty scary. Nice addition to the park. 7/10. Also, I heard some enthusiast behind me in line, and he was saying that the green side is more intense. Is this true? If that was you and you're reading this, let me know After, we went to check Superman. It was finally open!!! We only waited 15 minutes. Man, I love flyers. I really wish there were more of these rides. Holiday World, help me out here I do wish that they could figure out a way to lower it into the invert-type of position on the brakes. Isn't that exactly what it is? So what would be the problem with just lowering it on the brake run? It would also improve capacity (not by much, but a bit). Even though people say it's nothing outside of the pretzel loop, I still loved every second. I didn't really feel like it was meandering. I think that's the point of the ride. It's supposed to give you a sensation of flight, and the "meandering", I think, represents that. I like this ride a lot. 8/10 Here we went on the parachutes. Fun! I wish more were out there. The breeze felt good, and the view was nice. Here, we had to leave, as we were headed to NYC. Tonight we had a Broadway show, so we headed out without rerides of anything We also did miss Runaway Mine Train, but I'm fine with that; I got on superman instead. Overall: Wow. This park doesn't even seem "Six Flags"! Great operations (almost, bizarro, I'm staring at you) across the board, AWESOME customer service, and great ride collection/maintenance. I loved this place! It's in my top 3 parks for sure. Now for some pics! Walking up to a couple B&Ms is always a good thing! And the tallest coaster in the world! Combo shot Stupid water cooler! Oh well. I still love Nitro's entrance. It makes it seem way taller as you watch it slowly climb the lift. The skies look a lot better on day 2! This was a rushed on-the-way-out shot, but hey, I'd say it's not that bad. Joker and the sky ride combo definitely make for a nice entry view. Good ol' Superman peering over the trees! I'm a fan of this (and all flyers at that) for sure! Green Lantern train, Superman train, AND and airplane?! I need to go the lottery. I can never get Thunderbird and Voyage crossover shots back at home. How many coasters do you spot? This park has an amazing first impression with the 2 B&Ms and now these two Intamin monsters, along with another B&M just barely standing way back in the back. Goodbye Nitro and Great Adventure! What an amazing park! I loved it!

So you mean like turn in the shed, and then roll into the station backwards? Then load and dispatch backwards, alternating forward and backward? If this is what you mean, I'm not sure at all, but don't trains have to be fitted to run backwards vs forwards? I thought I remembered hearing something like new trains when SF parks get NAMTAB. But I guess they could potentially, somehow design it to run both backwards and forwards if the train design is an issue. -

I'd say it looks like a pretty solid addition. It's nothing mind blowing, but that obviously wasn't the intention here. They were going for something for the entire family. But either way, if it ends up even remotely like Lightning Run (my only GCI), it will definitely be a great addition. Also, in GP eyes, Banshee, Diamondback, heck even Firehawk are all incredibly intense coasters. This of course makes it look like a massive gap in the lineup, as it doesn't look intense because it doesn't go very high or invert or anything. I think they think that wooden coasters aren't intense whatsoever. This all, I think, would explain those horrible reactions on Facebook, etc.
