Kings Dominion (KD) Discussion Thread

Wind seeker was closed today, had a crane in the morning and was testing in the afternoon. Got about 6 or 8 rides on I-305 today, and man I greed out every time, some times much more so than others. Did the 2011 repairs to the track configuration make these occurrences less frequent to any of you guys? I never rode it in 2010 before or with the trims. -

I think in general B&M has done a great job with their inverted coasters. After GateKeeper's mixed reactions I'd say its new school B&M inconsistency. -

Can anyone say anything about the sit down trains? You can see what looks like colored tape of sorts on the restraints at 0:33 in the video. Not 100% sure what Togo sit down trains look like. -
If it gave you a headache the first time and the second time and the third time, why did you continue riding it? There's not a whole lot to do at SFA. I ride once or twice per visit because my friends think it looks like fun. But hey, it's better than nothing, and riding nothing is better than riding the nearby Mind Eraser.

I doubt that anyone would disagree that Gatekeeper is better that Apocalypse. But, overall, Gatekeeper isn't a great ride; CP's Maverick, Millennium Force, and Raptor are much better. I agree, but he said that it was the shakiest and mist unbearable B&M he's been on. Unless he hasn't walked 100 feet towards Mantis, I think that's a bit of an exaggeration.

^^You know, I haven't ridden IRat, or anything RMC for that matter, so I'd have to ride it myself and read some credible reviews, but I'm curious if some voters (not saying this is happening, just thinking out loud) will rank any RMC coaster higher than a theoretical exact copy of the same coaster by a different manufacturer. This may have been the case with some Schwarzkopf coasters in the past, as I've heard. Again, not saying I dislike RMC (quite the opposite, I'd love to ride one someday) or that's this is what is happening, but outside if the terrain elements and first drop of IRat, it doesn't seem like there's a whole lot to it. Any of you who have ridden it, please let me know what you think of it.

What is the reason you say that, being from Australia I'm very interested Also what is the actual ranking purpose of the poll, I gather it is the coaster that you have the most fun on? Not the coaster that made you scared the most? Sorry for the newb q's - first time I've heard if this poll Wing coasters, generally speaking, are considered essentially forceless and occasionally boring in comparison to some of the higher quality B&M's out there, or many inverted or sit down B&M's. As for the rankings, at least from my understanding, ballots are based on the best coaster experience, and voters can interpret that how they like, depending on what they prefer in coasters (airtime, intensity, speed, etc) I apologize for the double post.

KD's Shockwave has a painfully slow lift, but this thing looks like it barely tops 1 mph. You can also catch a glimpse of the restraints in the on ride video around 0:33, they look very strange to me. Also, the cables along the lift look pretty sketchy, that is, not like those seen on Togo standups (or at least not on KD's Shockwave). -

Looks like I'm making my second ever trip down to KD tomorrow... anyone that's been already or can answer, how should crowds be Wednesday, during Spring Break Week? I went last year the same time and the longest I waited was an hour for Volcano around 11. Any other tips would would be appreciated! -

Are the trains on Iron Rattler from RMC or Gerstlauer? Are they any different than the trains on topper track? -
I was there Saturday- all coasters were a walk on until around 1. Alter that, I didn't wait more than 20 minutes (Batwing and Superman), but that was due to poor operations with one train on every coaster. I wouldn't worry about crowds too much. Edit: as for processing, I did so around 4 as I left because the line was very long in the morning, but still waited upwards of 90 minutes due to line jumping and understaffing.

A question: "Lateral force"
Password121 replied to Dr. M's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
While we are on the topic, out of curiosity, is there any theoretical limit to withstanding negative g's? Would a certain point put too much stress on your body, like positive g's, or would it just be uncomfortable ejector airtime forcing you into your restraints? -

Not that B&M is really in the same category as Intamin, but they seem to be trying to catch up in height and speed by manufacturing Giga coasters now, with Leviathan and whatever is coming to Carowinds next year. -
That would work if most of the parks with Windseekers didn't already have drop towers... Demon Drop - Power Tower Behemoth - Leviathan Point? Demon drop no longer exists and Behemoth and Leviathan are not drop towers. I think the point is that you can have two similar rides at the same park without issue.

A question: "Lateral force"
Password121 replied to Dr. M's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
That makes sense, thanks. As for Goliath's stall under the lift, is that positive or negative? The approaching negative g's rotate into positive, but you are also suspended in the air upside down, producing what seems like a combination of the two. (Well, obviously we haven't ridden it, but that's what it seems like it will do.) -

What kind of forces does Outlaw Run's wave turn produce? There is no lateral movement, but gravity pulls you towards the ground, which is your right side, which seems like laterals. -

This topic is interesting to me. If a track were banked 90 degrees and curving at the same time (if I305's first curve was 90 degree banked), would that be completely positive g force? You would be moving in a circular direction, like laterals, but banked and curving in a way that the track only curves upwards, like a loop on its side. What would this do? -

Wait, I305 pulls laterals? If so, when? How is this even comfortable? Oops, didn't say that how I wanted to. G forces during lateral movement, producing positive g's. My mistake. -
Just want to post my thoughts on this- do you consider airtime obnoxious as well? Zumanjaro (not sure what "Kilo" is) will probably have a higher throughput than RT, considering low ridership. Also, 24 riders per cycle is comparable with most Intamin drop towers. Not sure how that's a capacity nightmare. Just sayin. Also, "Kilo" itself takes up 0 sq. feet. It's just the queue that requires the RT footprint, which was likely an excuse to remove RT (not that they needed an excuse, it's their decision). For "Nintro," I think Mitch Hawker would tend to disagree. Not trying to be too rude, but I wanted to point these out.

I'm really torn because I've always wanted to ride a B&M dive coaster but I really want to ride I305 as well. Does Griffon live up to the hype? Griffon is unique due to the diving first drop, but IMO I305's drop is more intense/exciting. Also I305 is arguably the best roller coaster in the world, and BGW has multiple above average coasters. -
That's a little uncalled for. I've only ridden a handful of operating coasters that are so bad I refuse to ride them ever again. I find very few coasters un rideable. The only ones I can think of are Mind Eraser at SFNE and SFA, Green Lantern (which I would ride again hoping that maybe I just got a terrible ride but if I have the same experience then screw this ride) and X2. I actually have a pretty high tolerance for crappy coasters... rides like Anaconda and Shockwave at KD, Mean Streak and the now demolished Son of Beast actually never bothered me that much. They're not good rides but they're not nearly as bad as X2. Maybe it's not that way in every seat, and maybe it's not that bad for people of different heights / body types but the 2 times I rode X (X2) back in 2002 and again in 2013 were some of the most horrendous coaster rides I've ever had. I have rides like Maverick, Kumba, El Toro and I305 in my top 10 so I'm actually a big fan of G forces, don't confuse extreme head banging for "extreme G forces". I've never been to SFMM so this is a serious question: why do you think the GP loves X2 so much in your opinion it is the worst operating coaster you've been on?
