Holiday World (HW) Discussion Thread
GayCoasterGuy replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
^I concur. The park has mentioned it several times over the years; at HWN, online, etc. The walk to Thunderbird will still be a shorter walk to and from my beloved American Eagle at Great America -
Kentucky Kingdom tried that years ago and were sued out of the name. Twisted Twins were originally called Twisted Sisters. Maybe if there was some sort of a complicated deal with the corporation that owns the band name. But even then, I think it would be completely lost on 99.9% of the Six Flags YOLO crowd. Dee Snider rocks and is super cool. Yolo is super annoying. But I get what you're saying I still have that VHS buried in a box somewhere! It is very cheesy... but awesome to watch at the same time. If you had coaster friends (remember, this was pre-internet), there were home made tapes going around, so it was nice to have something produced with half way decent quality (minus the creepy content). I think most of the coasters were sped-up in the POVs!

So true. Say it loud and proud! You got that right! Could you imagine it at (fill in the blank corporate park)? Trim on drop #1, trim going up hill #5, a complete stop at the MCBR and at least 2 or 3 trims going back to the station. And it would be rough, geez it would be rough. Raven and Legend would have sets of trims on their initial drops, too. Good thing this is not the case; we all know some corporations did what they could to get their hands on Holiday World: "no thank you!" Thank you Holiday World and your Coaster Cats! You swooped down like and underdog with Raven and haven't stopped since. -

This might also come in handy if/when you know exactly what route you'll be taking (and if you'll be taking the 407): http://www.407etr.com/highway/map.html Thank you! It's amazing how simply everything is explained on those sites. -

Another question for those who know the CW area. I'll be driving up from Erie (Waldameer) and when I leave CW, I'll be driving across through Detroit back home to Chicago. A friend told me to avoid a certain toll way in Canada (the 407?) due to obscenely high tolls (he said he was charged something like $138 for 8 miles of toll road; and got the bill in the mail). Any advice? -

I wonder if a general bulking-up of the superstructure around the bottom of the first drop would help. It might be silly to wonder something that would have been done could/should it have been done... but I just keep thinking about the bulkiest of woodies (Viper at Great America) and how smooth they seem to stay. The bottom of Legend's first drop is so high off the ground; that curve/drop combo is a high stress place. I'm sure the coaster cats know what needs done, I'm rambling. Legend is my favorite The middle child. -

How long were the waits? Very good point... I cannot find a Marineland thread though Is it that unpopular? -

Another Marineland question (does a dedicated thread even exist?): the park stops admissions at 6pm, but stuff continues to operate. I've heard from one person that that's a lie; I emailed the park and they said the park continues after 6pm - including Dragon Mountain. How late does it go? I also just talked to another friend who told me (besides how horrible and strange the park is) that Dragon Mountain has been widdled down to a one train operation. I'm most likely gonna stop in late in the day (around 4 pm) and wondering how many laps I'll be able to score on the old steel beast. -

^That sucks. I'm all about animal rights. But the coaster nerd in me has wanted to ride Dragon Mountain for years. -

Other than there being only one ride of interest and 10 miles between anything, what is so bad about it? I really really want to ride Dragon Mountain. -

I've already thrown the Fast Lane Plus into my budget (I'm not a huge B&M guy, but for $10 over the regular Fast Lane, it's worth it even if I want to ride each one time). Now I see both Martin's Fantasy Island and Marineland are right between Waldameer and CWonderland... now my head is spinning! MFIsland is closed on Mondays, and Marineland is a hefty price for one coaster and only a couple hours in the park (plus it's only open until 6?!?!). Would anyone recommend Marineland or should I skip? I'm not fond of rushing from park to park with little time at each (hence my 2 days scheduled for Canada's Wonderland). Of course, I could re-structure the trip to include MFIsland, but then I'd have more rushing around to do. -

^What would you say the waits are for stuff like the Vekoma SLC, Sky Rider and Vortex? I would rather pay (this time, anyway) to avoid even a few 20-30 minute lines. If it works as well as people say, I think it would be worth it to avoid the lines during this trip. -

I'm thinking about leaving the Waldameer area on Monday in the AM and getting a 2 day pass for CWonderland. So, I can go Monday night and Tuesday, or Tuesday and Wednesday. If I don't get the fast lane pass in advance for one of those days, it may sell out. I won't get to the park early after it opens on any day; I'm a slow poke and like to sleep in But I'm always up for staying late. -

Is there a merge point before the station? Is there any wait at all? I think I might end up splurging on the Fast lane plus. I've never been to the park and want to do everything - especially all those wicked looking flats! I have fond memories of the Skylab (BIG enterprise) that was at Kings Island, and I know CW has one -

^Thanks for the info! Is Fast Lane Plus much better? From what I've heard, it's run much different (better?) than those at SF parks. -

Thanks for the input. If I still opted for fast lane, does it cut my wait significantly? I'm not sure how it works... I read a review of CW from a couple years ago where they were saying it was a waste of money and didn't significantly reduce wait times. I'll most likely be there alone, and I don't handle crowds well. I might also be getting there later in the day, after noon time - but I can definitely stay until close. With SF Great America being my home park, I've seen many people with flash pass on days where they didn't need it. They looked silly going up the flash pass entrance queue when there was less than a station wait. In some cases, they ended up waiting longer (still on the order of 1-2 minutes, but it still looked ridiculous). -

Looks like I'll be going to CW for the first time on Monday August 25th and/or Tuesday August 26th. Does anyone know if those days are going to be crowded? I heard school goes back late up there, so I assume the park will be packed. Is it worth it/needed to get the pay-to-cut pass? -

If I were you I would definitely go the weekend before as the weekend after is a long weekend right before school starts (Sept. 2) so everyone usually tries to make it out that weekend for one last visit of the summer. I'm not going either weekend (looking at the way I worded it, I can see the confusion). I would be going either the Mon and/or Tuesday after Waldameer or the Thurs/Fri before Conneaut. Which weekdays are the best? -

I have a question for anyone that knows the park well. I've never been to CW and I'm thinking about going before or after a weekend at Conneaut/Waldameer (an ACE/WNYCC event), Sat Aug 23/Sun Aug 24. I'm trying to decide if it's better to go to CW before or after that event. When does school go back in? Like any coaster nerd, I'd rather go when the crowds are not as heavy. I've heard CW gets behemoth crowds... (When I realized how close the park is to Waldameer, I decided I must go and ride Sky Rider! I loved KI's King Cobra back in the day. My one ride on KD's Shockwave was not good; I've heard Sky Rider was the best out of the 3.) -
Fun Spot (Angola, Indiana) (SBNO)
GayCoasterGuy replied to GigaG's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
When I was in school in the early 90s, I stopped there on the way (to work for the summer at) Cedar Point. Fun little park, always have time for an Arrow shuttle loop! Those things are (were!) kind of intimidating. The funny thing was the little Zyclon coaster has shoulder bars. Zyclon is now at Santa's Village Azoosement park here in Illinois (Dundee) and no longer has shoulder bars (yay!) -
