  1. Done my part. TPR is winner by a mile (several, actually) in all applicable categories.
  2. No, that's at Euro-Magic Mountain. Or Bon Bon Land...
  3. Dido! Wooden coasters are so much more than.. bolt support, position track, bolt track. BORING! Dido? White flag? Thank you? Here With Me? BORING....?
  4. More from Germany! Loopless and mysterious, this Schwarzkopf creation has always fascinated me. Can't find it on rcdb. Did it also operate under a different name? And where is it now?
  5. In that case, here are a few more reasons to visit Kennywood. Are those pictures you took yorself? They are awesome! I like those dusk shots with all the shinny lights! Thanks for adding those! Yes, taken with my little no-frills digital camera while there July 15 & 19. Met a Hersyeypark employee while in line for Phantom the last night. I think Kennycon was the next day? He said the two parks have an agreement that allows Kennywood emplyees free admission Hersheypark, and vice versa. While I've been to HP several times, and like it very much, Kennywood seems to be more interested in retaining a nostalgic charm, especially evident at night. On this trip I hit all the western Pennsylvania parks, even stopping by Conneaut Lake Park for a look. Waldameer is another very charming park. And Idlewild!
  6. In that case, here are a few more reasons to visit Kennywood. Phantom's Revenge tasty treats around every corner Auto Race - is this the only remaining Harry Traver ride of this type? Racer
  7. Queueing for Jack Rabbit as a train of happy riders passes overhead. July 2008
  8. Is it possible to have nostalgic feelings for a park first visited only four months ago? Having known of Kennywood for about thirty years now, I finally got there this past July, twice in one week: on a Tuesday (Italian Day!) and Saturday. It did not disappoint. It's obvious that the operators cherish the park's history. I hope the new owners will continue with this philosophy. I have a few photos I'd like to share. Is this an appropriate thread? Or would Remembering the 2008 Roller Coaster Season! be better? Mmmmmmmmm......
  9. At the moment I'm out of Kennywood cards. Will dig deeper later. So here's a nice old one of Springlake, topic of recent discussion over at Scott's Coaster Closet. Photos I've seen show rolling stock of three different manufacturers during the life of this coaster.
  10. More great stuff Scott. Strange that those GASM trains were just sitting there, exposed to the elements. I remember seeing Texas Cyclone PTC trains in "storage" at SFOT, slowing slowly being stripped for parts for Judge Roy Scream. Flyer & Screechin' Eagle - two more woodies I knew of when they were operating, but never rode. Wildcat after its relocation was a bit of a mess. I've seen photos of those odd Springlake rides. I wonder if that hybrid train-coaster was completely unique to that park, or if similar attractions could be found elsewhere. Here's a photo that appears to be the same ride, and called Super Chief. I've looked for the manufacturer of that Orbit ride, but no luck. Looks like it could be Eyerly or very closely related. I think the entire ride rotated on that main column.
  11. Here's another dated 1989. Love that Jack Rabbit!
  12. More Kennywood for Kennyweek.
  13. This view shows what the Lost Kennywood area looked like in 1989.
  14. ^Wow, I've never seen a postcard of that ride. Nice one! Here's Cypress Gardens' poor Starliner in its original home.
  15. I had never seen the Katapult until I saw (fell victim to?) a very bad Shelley Winters film on TV many years ago. It was about carnies, where she and her husband were the owners of the Katapult, if I remember correctly. There's a brief description of the 1981 masterpiece at imdb. Were the two Wildwood locations the only US home of a Katapult? How many trips through the loop did one ride get you? (My, what a long train you have...)
  16. Here's a So Cal gem: Harry Traver's beautiful Cyclone Racer, which operated from 1930 until it was closed in 1968. Anyone here ever ride it? There was an episode of Leave It To Beaver that featured this ride and the Beaver's anxiety about being expected to ride it with his older brother and friends. I'm guessing that was filmed in the 50s. I had heard of it, but never seen the footage in this from 1936. There is an intro explaining exactly what it is. I... In the photo on this card it looks like some of the wood is unpainted. And I'm suspicious of the blank spot to the left. There was a large midway in that area which should be visable in this shot. Looks like it's been retouched/removed here. (See the only photo in the rcdb link above.)
  17. [Reposting due to Halloween poltergeist TPR outage.] Greeting card sent to me by a coaster friend. This park has a rodent problem! When AstroWorld's halloween event began in the 80s it was called Fright Nights. For this event they used an altered version of their multi-colored logo (the one that served as inspiration for Shane's Amusement Attic season 2 logo). I'm sure it appeared in print, but all I could find was my two Fright Nights shirts, so I scanned one. Pretty cool, eh? Fright Nights logo mid-80s inside Elissaland?
  18. Told ya. Nemesis opened two years after the original B&M inverted, Six Flags Great America's much-cloned Batman. Although its track length is a bit shorter than Batman's, its unusual sequence of elements and close-to-the-ground layout give a very intense ride experience... that really packs a punch... thirsty!... gimme more punch!
  19. Don't know if it still does, but when Nemesis was young it featured a bloody waterfall as part of its extensive theming. What I saw of it reminded me more of Hawaiian Punch, but maybe that's what alien blood looks (tastes?) like... I'm finding mostly cobwebs in my frightful postcards box. You're gonna see something very similar to this card tomorrow. postmark 20 Oct 1997
  20. Anyone know what year this attraction was put to rest? I'm' sure it seemed much bigger back then. edit: according to this site the pictured Skull Rock was just one of many attractions in the Skull Island section of the park. Skull Rock had gawked at guests from the park's opening year of 1961 until it was removed in 1978.
  21. Look familiar? Back on page 9 Shane posted a similar card, both from the park's debut year of 1992. It was known simply as Fiesta Texas until the Six Flags brand was attached in 1996. Cool logo. Pity about the ride.
  22. Although this would have made its demise even more tragic, I wish it were true. Actually, the park only removed the headrest part of the same old Morgan trains. Check the TPR photo gallery for the Texas Cyclone for examples, including a few photos of the last ride. Nice card, btw. I had never seen that one.
  23. If they jam it up against the Cyclone it can look just like AstroWorld did in the mid 90s. (...It was an eyesore.)
  24. That bloody waterfall is featured here, in yet another variation of a Demon postcard. postmark 11 Sep 1985
  25. And for all the vertical loop fans, here's some more Demon:
