The State of the Theme Park industry
Tmcdllr replied to Hayzle's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
You should count your blessings that you live in this period of time compared to when I was a kid. Turning people upside down was the biggest novelty/innovation in the 70's and 80's and Arrow was the king of the manufacturers, who pretty much capped off their long resume with their trio of mega loopers - Shock Wave, GASM II, and Viper (though KI's Vortex and the short lived Drachen Fire could also be included). In the meantime the Arrow suspended coaster (which didn't really take off like I thought it should have), the TOGO stand-up and Ultra Twister, and Intamin/Mack bobsled were all we had. Heck Vekoma introduced their much maligned boomerangs at this time. Also you figure launched coasters were left to the Arrow and Schwarzkopf shuttles, which there weren't many found in American parks and new wood coasters were few and far between. Yeah you got that right! You mentioned Arrow coasters, you can also add the interlocking loop design of the Loch Ness Monster to that list of innovations, the first ever to feature interlocking loops. Yep, this is what we had Yeah pretty much going upside down and being launched from a Schwarzkopf shuttle loop by weight drop or fly wheel was what was going on. Compare that to today and there is no comparison! So many innovations, so much advancement, many-many incredible ride creations. This is also the era, mind you, that Werner Stengel has created his 500th coaster (Maverick)....omg he has designed (more than) 500 rollercoasters! Amazing. I used to think being launched on Tidal Wave at Great America (weight drop Schwarzkopf shuttle loop) was one on the most amazing feelings ever. Then I rode the likes of Superman: The escape and Vertical Velocity and was completely blown away. -
TPR Bay Area Weekend - SFDK/CGA

YES! If its anything like the bash events I've read about, even on a smaller scale, I would go. I've always wanted to attend the WCB but was never able to and this sounds like it could be fun. Plus, CGA is my home park only about 10 minutes away and SFDK, which I also like to visit, is only a couple hours drive so it would be easy for me to get there. For those of you from out of town when visiting CGA, as said the Avatar hotel is a good place to stay. Its right across the street from the park basically walking distance, and there is an IHOP attatched to it! Btw, when is the next WCB, maybe I will be able to go this time. -

Oh my. This could be trouble. Imagine if someone looking for a lawsuit went on this ride and got a bruised knee like that person, gonna happen sooner or later unless something can be done about it. Since it seems this happens when the rotation is slowed with the pods still up in the windy area, a simple program change to make it not slow the rotation until it is lower to the ground, say 20-40 feet or so, and out of the wind "area" could solve that problem. Then once it got to this height the ride would "wait" until the rotation is slow enough that the pods could be safely lowered the rest of the way. There...done...fixed. -
If this is all true, the name "Stratos Fear" suggests it will be a very tall drop ride, 300-400ft, possibly even taller? I like that name the best. Stratus...being lifted so high you are almost is the stratosphere Fear... the fear of heights, the fear of being dropped from that high up. It seems to fit. Seems enough to theme as well, so not much work needed there...lol

Be patient. Sometimes the really great innovations come in small steps and not all at once. The era we now live in has seen some of the greatest ride innovations ever. Remember the 80s....did you ever even think there would be such things as inverted, floorless, flying, 400ft tall launched, and even 4D coasters? Dive coaster? Or how about the countless ride elements introduced over the years? All of this took time to develop, it didn't all happen at once. With so many great coaster/ride manufacturers pushing for more innovative ride designs, don't worry, you will be seeing some awesome stuff soon enough! When you've got companies like B&M, Intamin, Maurer Sohne, GCII to name a few, you are guaranteed something good will be coming. I do agree though it seems like there is a slight lull in development but that is just a phase and it will pass. You may not have been around in the 80s but compared to today, there wasn't much really going on. I am so absolutely amazed at some of the incredible rides that have been created over the last 30 years, it is astonishing what they have accomplished. I mean really, launching a coaster to over 100 miles an hour in a few seconds with magnetic or hydraulic technology? That's totally insane...can you imagine? When I was a kid none of this stuff was around and nobody ever dreamed it would get to where it has today. Just appreciate what is out there now and enjoy it, new things will come along when the time is right. -
Zonga at SFDK had lapbars and OTSRs, that severely restricted arm movement. If I remember right, when they put that ride in they had to put those on due to clearance issues since part of the ride was reprofiled and to get around those issues the "answer" was OTSRs that severely restricted you from sticking your arms up or outside the cars. The explanation of this can be read here...Zonga info, RCDB If you look closely you can see the OTSRs here... Tidal Wave only ever had lap bars, like it was intended to, I always really liked that ride. As for this Revolution rumor, if its true that's good, at least they are trying to improve the restraints. If its not true then that is a shame. I just wish something would happen with it already...how long has this been going on now? Seems like forever! Once they finally get this settled, maybe, hopefully someday, they would do something about the trims and maybe the reason its trimmed so heavily is because of the titanium retraints on there now.

Yes its a California thing. If this ride was in one of those states it would most likely never have gotten the OTSRs. It sucks that this state has to be so anal about stuff like this when this kind of thing would be perfectly fine in another state, thank you very much you sue happy greedy Californians, and your lawyers for that matter too!

^It's also an insurance thing too. The best thing that could happen to Revolution is to replace the trains with the new Schwarzkopf trains, this would provide a better ride and because the trains would have the new type of OTSRs not only would the ride be way more comfortable but it would also comply with the insurance company requirements. What would actually happen in all reality in a best case scenario is the current rock hard, incorrect size, look-like-they-don't-belong OTSRs would at least be replaced with new soft, custom fitted OTSRs that actually are the CORRECT SIZE to fit the ride and the riders and not something that looks like it was just thrown on at the last minute. That is the biggest problem with them, they are not the correct size/type or even mounted at the correct height. When I sit in the train the bottom of the OTSR pretty much is at my throat with a lot of extra room above me, obviously when you compare this to other rides that have proper restraints you really see how wrong these are. I don't think they will ever get new trains, they really don't need to as they are in very good shape and they won't spend the money, sadly, to replace all the trains just because the restraints are wrong. But, what they could do, less expensively, is at least replace these OTSRs with the correct size and type so they at least fit like they are supposed to, I think that would help tremendously.

QFT. If it was dangerous, the ride wouldn't be operating. I'm sure the ride is designed to do this, to ensure that there is enough lee-way on the joints to prevent excess stress on the arms. Besides, other chairswings and similar rides (especially those with chains) do this as well, so I'm sure that if it was unsafe, they wouldn't be operating the ride. And as someone stated before, it's not like the seats are swinging around at Skyhawk-like speeds. It's relatively slow, and I doubt it's enough to injure anyone if they were to bump up against each other. That's all it takes is for one car just to touch another one or not even that, just get close and the next thing you know there is a lawsuit because somehow some idiot got "injured" when this happened. -

^The video clearly shows the cars are able to swing forwards and back, not a lot but enough that they could hit each other. -
^Sure but what about budget and staffing? You have to have bodies there to do the work and if they are busy doing other, more important things or there isn't enough of them, it may not be possible to do both at once. Then there is the issue of parts. Rehabs require parts and since this is the first real rehab for these trains it could be that they required many parts that could not be ordered all at once or they were only able to order enough parts to do one train at a time. Then there is the budget and seeing as how they just improved one major ride, installed another one, and installed a completely new ride with the additional treatments to the backlot area, which could have taken a huge chunk out of the maintenance budget (money has to come from somewhere for all this), they may not have been able to do both at once simply because the funds were being put to these other things. And it could also be that the reason they are doing one at a time now is that the maintenance schedule for the off season would not have permitted time to do both because of many other things going on. Since none of us really knows the inner workings of the park to this extent, it is impossible to say why this is the way it is without really knowing all of the details.

Looks like maybe there was a strong gust of wind as most of it seems to be on one side and it looked like some of the chairs may have actually made contact with each other.......hmm very interesting.
