  1. There are a couple of versions here: http://www.themeparkreview.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=661359#661359
  2. Hercules and Texas Giant where built in the same year and both billed as the World's tallest wooden coaster. They were fighting over where the height was measured. Hercules had a longer drop because it dropped down into that valley, while the Giant was the tallest from the ground up. I can't remember how it was resolved, I think they both just marketed their rides as the World's Biggest. Anyone else feel free to comment on the lawsuit if you remember more. In the mean time here is a home movie and an ancient souvenir book. [coastertube]http://www.themeparkreview.com/coastertube/play.php?vid=Six_Flags_Over_Texas_1sm1[/coastertube]
  3. More to come, but I have to go pick my kids up from their Guitar lessons. Check back later tonight for more Six Flags over Texas awsomeness including early home movies...
  4. SIX FLAGS over TEXAS Since Cowabunga Bay now takes up most of my summer vacation time I have to visit parks in the shoulder seasons (spring & fall) So it is especially nice when a park opens early. I am so excited to be going to Dallas in a couple of weeks to go to one of my favorite parks for opening day. Yes, the park I speak of is the original Six Flags park...Six Flags over Texas. I have not been to the park since the early eighties. Although I am excited for all the new additions the true reason I want to go is for a couple of spins on the Schwarzkopf masterpiece, Shock Wave. To get ready for my trip I have pulled out my file on Six Flags over Texas. Included is press releases, old photos, souvenir books and even some old movie footage I shot from 1980. So here is a pretty detailed update on the original regional theme park (don't call it an amusement park...that is a no-no). Yee Haw for TEXAS! -Shane How about some history... There is a lot of information here, study hard. There will be a test at the end of this update. You've come a long way baby! Donkeys! Attraction timeline old timers will remember this campaign. "We Care About You" This was back in the days when I was a ride attendant at SFMM "Sarajevo Boblsed opening CREW!" Here comes the Judge, Here comes the Judge... Finally a picture! Postcards from days gone by. Bring back the WHITE Shock Wave! Someone start a facebook page. They say Judge pushed out this gem...but true die hards know the REAL story. Well at least it is still in the same state So MAJESTIC in it's white scheme. Time for some coasters the 80's brought Roaring Rapids the facts Park Info Celebrating 30 years! Remember the lawsuit between Six Flags and Dorney park over whose was bigger? I love this picture.
  5. The good ol' days, when Montezooma's Revenge was yellow and not defiled by Jaguar. ZOOM!
  6. I am not really a fan of white coasters, but to me there are two coasters that should have or should always remain WHITE. They are Shock Wave and Revolution. Shock Wave has probably seem more color schemes that any other coaster, and some of them have been truly hideous. I am going to Six Flags over Texas opening day and can't wait to get a ride on Shock Wave! (I guess White Lightnin' at Carowinds should have always stayed white also, but since it is not around anymore we'll let that one slide)
  7. Yes, my avatar is of Lightnin' Loops that used to be the major attraction at Six Flags Great Adventure. I have always been a fan of the original shuttle loop models (Arrow and Schwarzkopf). With the closing of Kentucky Kingdom it seems that the Arrow versions have outlasted the Schwarzkopf versions here in the States 2 - 1. Worldwide, Schwarzkopf is still up by one. Which version do you prefer? Lightnin' Loops was such a great concept for the time and to this day I don't think there is a better coaster visual that two trains passing through interlocking loops at the same time...talk about the "money shot!" Here are a few more pictures of Lightnin' Loops: from Great Adventure souvenir book From Arrow's ride brochure From Great Adventure brochure Postcard from the park From the park map
  8. This is one of the few parks in the States I have never been too. It looks really nice (from the before pictures). I will have to get it on my travel itinerary soon.
  9. ^ Third gate at Universal huh? Now that is an interesting idea...of course with the "Hard Rock" name on it.
  10. Just watched the testing of World of Color...Still picking my jaw up off the floor. My faith in Disney has been renewed!!!!
  11. Here is a sneak preview of my SUPER HUGE update on Six Flags over Texas...coming up in Shane's Amusement Attic. A couple of early postcards from the souvenir postcard pack.
  12. Here is me movie footage I shot of the Viper back in 1982. [coastertube]http://www.themeparkreview.com/coastertube/play.php?vid=Darien_Lake_Viper_5xoz[/coastertube]
  13. Hmmmm, that gives me an idea, let me know when it goes on the market I've got my eye on a few other things too.
  14. Well thanks for joining the party. Better late than never. I think I did the update on the World of Sid & Marty Kroft a couple of years ago and maybe a hundred pages back. It certainly was an interesting concept for a park, but then again Sid & Marty were a couple of interesting guys..Lidsville, H. R. Puff-n-stuff??? Some one please pass the pipe!
  15. I'd rather ride Predator any day over Mind Eraser! Thanks everyone for adding your comments and memories of this park.
  16. Didn't George Clooney also work at Kings Island? How about Dolly Parton at Dollywood
  17. Chinese woodies are usually really small, I am impressed with how big this one is.
  18. Here are a couple more Darien Lake nuggets...
  19. Darien Lake "FUN COUNTRY" FUN COUNTRY??? Anyone remember when Darien Lake was Fun Country? Well that is the way it was back in the early 80's. Here is a look at the park in 1981 as they were about to do a HUGE $21 million expansion thanks for a unique partnership with Arrow/Huss. This park became a showplace for all HUSS rides: Enterprise, UFO, Ranger, Swing-A-Round. Not sure why they did not receive the Tri-Star or Troika. They also debuted a first class Arrow multi-loop coaster. "Viper" was one of the biggest in the world at that time and the one of the first rides to feature 5 inversions and the second ride to use the boomerang element. You can read all the other details here and see photos and marketing material in this update. I will add super 8 movie of the Viper shortly from it's opening year. -Shane
  20. Trust me you can do A LOT on six acres! I've done the same with a company that starts with "C" and ends with "owabunga Bay".
  21. That first drop is simply delicious...I want to eat it up.
  22. KUDOS to Magic Mountain's Guest Services... I have to compliment the greatly improved guest services at Six Flags Magic Mountain. I bought a season pass to the park in January knowing that I was going to be traveling to the park last week. I am also planning a trip to Six Flags over Texas and Great Adventure but since I was going to Magic Mountain first, I purchased the pass for that park. Well I made the trek from Salt Lake to Magic Mountain this past weekend, and like the Griswalds, when I got to the park it was closed (due to weather). I spoke with the park today about the situation and that I would not be coming to the park after all to process my pass. They were so friendly and never once did they lead me to believe there would be a problem in resolving the issue. The woman (I wish I could remember her name because she was SO NICE) told me that she would call the Texas park and put a note on my confirmation number explaining the situation. Not more than an hour later I received a call from Brandon in the Six Flags Magic Mountain Guest Services confirming that they had spoke with the Texas park and not only would they resolve the problem but they would refund me the difference in the prices between Magic Mountain & the Texas Park. Thanks Magic Mountain for a very positive experience.
