FlyerACE1 Posted June 12, 2006 Posted June 12, 2006 A few weeks back, Tim Melago, Ellen Whitman and I took a trip to The Original, a Pittsburgh fixture that will sadly be closing sometime this year. Located in the heart of UPitt's campus, "The O" as it's lovingly referred to is famous for its super huge portion of fries, delicious hot dogs and beer. Here are some photos from our trip. The red neon of The Original. Places like this need to be saved! Damn, we did (well, almost)! The remnants of our french fry basket. The O also has beer!! Tim enjoys a local favorite, Iron City while I pound down a Yuengling. In addition to fries, they also have awesome dogs. Here, Ellen enjoys her Super Dog, topped with bacon and cheese. A better look at the massive basket of fries! Tim delivers the "large" fries. Damn! Will the three of us be able to finish this? There it is, The Original!
USRoadTripper Posted June 13, 2006 Posted June 13, 2006 Wow, they just talked about this place on Food Network last week. I'm surprised that they didn't mention that it was closing (y'know, it was probably an old episode, I guess). It looked great though! -Julie
PhishyBrewer Posted June 13, 2006 Posted June 13, 2006 What's BACT? The only thing google came back with is Best Available Control Technology. And I don't think that's it.
FlyerACE1 Posted June 13, 2006 Author Posted June 13, 2006 What's BACT? The only thing google came back with is Best Available Control Technology. And I don't think that's it. BACT is a little acronym that Derek came up with. It stands for Beer And Coaster Team. "Coaster Team" was a little inside joke started by a few friends of ours prompted by that toolish shirt that Six Flags sells. The Beer part was just added on by Derek to include that other little hobby we love (notice Beer is mentioned first). No official membership, just a way to distinguish us from the rest.
Rugged One Posted June 13, 2006 Posted June 13, 2006 Nice pics Adam. Holy crap, that's a big pile of fries! Hopefully they will still be open whenever we are able to make it back to Pittsburgh.
N'at Man Posted June 13, 2006 Posted June 13, 2006 Too bad you didn't get a shot of the 40oz cooler. It's impressive. We ate up at the "Top of the O" bar. It's a little nicer and calmer up there. We bought the food downstairs, brought it up and bought beer upstairs. Anyway, the owners want to get out of the business but they won't let a potential buyer call the place "The Original." If someone does buy it I suppose they could try to keep it the same, buying all of the equipment. But there is no guarantee that will happen. The property could be used for something else. I'm not sure when it is scheduled to close. I haven't heard anything recently so hopefully it will be open for a while longer.
