There's plenty of small parks in PA, not to mention Kennywood (I will hit that place this summer).

Waldamere(sp?) and Conneaut can be hit in one day. Room rates are fairly cheap around conneaut. Hit those two in one and KW the next.

In mid PA, there's Dutch Wonderland, lakemont, Williams Grove (if it opens) Idlewild.

What will you be driving and is that part of your 500.00 limit (for gas?)

For me, gas is a factor. For me to go to, say, dollywood which is 600 miles one way, i'd spend about 160.00 for gas round-trip)

Indiana Beach has a deal on their all day ride session for ace members, and if you're going that way, I'd check out holiday world, too. Ace members get in cheaply there, also. Between those two parks I'd think you'd have a great little trip. You'll definately get your fill of CCI goodness with a (not so) little GG thrown in for good measure;) Also, Cedar Point and Geauga Lake make a good duo of parks to visit for cedar fair pass holders.

Actually, driving is out of the question. Both of the vehicles we have are lease vehicles and we can't go over the miles. Basically, we have to take the Amtrak train out of East Lansing (LNS) or fly out of Capital City Airport in order to get wherever. My mother prefers to take the train, if that makes any difference.

well if you wanted to stay in the midwest, you could always have your mother rent a car, and you could get fairly easily to ohio, indiana, pennsylvania. If you were going farther than that, I'd fly, but you'll still probably have to rent a car when you get there, so if it's close by, save your money and just drive the rental there.

See, I'll already be at Cedar Point three times before the trip, so I'd really like to stay away from there. Any other ideas?

EDIT: If we did a Six Flags Great America trip, how much would that cost to get from the train station to the park?

well how about a kennywood trip with a stop at geauga lake. I'm sure there's train service to cleveland and to pittsburg, and coming from michigan you'd probably even go through cleveland either on the way to pittsburgh or on the way back. Geauga Lake's free with your cedar fair pass (My gf and I got in with our michigan's adventure pass last season) and kennywood is an awsome park, especially if you haven't been there. You'll love it.

Just thought I would give my topic a bit of a bump, as now it seems that I've got a little more... well, FREEDOM with this trip.

I have a $300 budget, which, I know, isn't much. That includes all gas, park tickets, hotels, etc... Keep in mind, this is for TWO people (myself at 17 and a senior at 71). My grandma has a car, but gas counts towards that $300 budget.

I've been to quite a few parks recently, here's the list I'd rather wait for a few more years to return to: Michigan's Adventure, Cedar Point, Geauga Lake, Dorney Park, Knoebel's, Hersheypark, Walt Disney World.

What I'd like to do is two parks and then a day of sightseeing/visiting... after all, my grandma is going with me so it can't be all coastering like I wish it could be. I don't know how logical/cost effective something like this is, so I have no idea what to expect exactly.

If you have any suggestions, please let me know!

I'd just drive out to the Dells. You haven't been there (from what I could tell) the parks are cheap and really good, plus there is all kinds of nature junk for siteseeing purposes.

If you take the highway you'll pass right by SFGAm on the way. If you'd rather not drive through Chicago (ugh) there is ferry service from Muskegon to Milwaukee for $130 R/T.

You could even stop off at Little America in one of the creepiest small towns in America. Also there are tons of caves in the area that offer tours.

Given your budget and your location that's what I would do. You might want to increase your budget a bit or bring a credit card just incase you need something...gas/hotel/coaster t-shirt

Actually, I didn't mention the Dells because I was just there in 2004 and I'll be headed back again this year. It's our big trip we take every two years as a family. But yeah, the Dells is a great place.

Actually, I'm looking at Holiday World. I've never been there and I'd really like to go. Any advice on a Holiday World trip? It would probably be the week after TimbersFest in June.

EDIT: Two years ago was 2004... doh.

Driving to Holiday World from MI is only about 420 miles each way which should normaly only take about 6 hours. It looks like you can stay on highway the entire way as long as you go through Louisville.

Of course that means that you can stop off at SFKK on the way. Bonus park!

The trouble with Holiday World is that there really isn't a lot in terms of accomidations in the area if you're looking to stay cheap. The best bet may be to stay in Louisville and drive out to the park for a day and then drive back.

Holiday World will save you on cash with their free parking/soda/waterpark/sunscreen/ect... Plus if you haven't been there before (or heck, even recently) I'd pick that!

You can drive out, stay 2 nights in louisville, hit the parks, and make it back home right around your budget. If you want to save even more there is a KOA right across the river from Louisville in Indiana that I've stayed at before.

If you don't mind sharing a tent with grannie!

lol, "Grannie" doesn't camp. Trust me, I tried that with PPP last year, and I think the quote was "You want me to sleep in a WHAT?!?"

I think I found a great trip that would be around $350 to $400 after all expenses would be as follows.

DAY ONE

Drive from Lansing, MI to Louisville, KY

Spend the day at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom

Check in at hotel

DAY TWO

Drive to Holiday World

Spend the day at Holiday World

Drive back to hotel

DAY THREE

Check out of hotel

Drive from Louisville, KY to Lansing, MI

Are there any other things I could do on Day Three before leaving? I really don't care to spend two days at Kentucky Kingdom, but if there's something else in Louisville that would be GREAT!

^You could include a trip down to Beech Bend to ride the new GCI woodie there as well as the other coasters and rides. Its about an hour and 30 minutes from Louisville.

How you're going to do a trip on $300 I have no idea. It cost me $40 to go to Hershey today and I didn't buy food or need a hotel!

Posted

Yeah, I'm still not with him on the cost but that's on him to make it work.

Something to think about:

Day 1 Drive out to Bowling Green. You probably won't need that much time at Beech Bend. Also you'd be about the same distance from Holiday World as you'd be in Louisville. Stay somewhere in that area that night and go out to Santa Claus in the morning.

Day 2 HW and then drive back to Louisville for the night.

Day 3 hit SFKK in the morning before you drive home. You absolutely do not need two days at this park. By going to BB beforehand and SFKK last you'll also have less of a drive that evening.

Personally if I only had 3 days including driving this is what I would do. The drive down is about the same as the distance from my house to SoCal and I do that drive all the time.

Be sure to post a TR so we all know how this worked out!

I keep it down in cost by not doing the special things, as well as not buying souvenirs and stuff like that. Basically, our only costs are hotel, gas, food, and tickets. That's it.

I actually really liked that plan, Jeezus, so here's what I'm looking at right now:

DAY ONE

Drive to Bowling Green, KY (7.5 hour drive!)

Spend afternoon/evening at Beech Bend

Drive to Louisville, KY (1.5 hour drive)

Check in at hotel

DAY TWO

Drive to Holiday World (1.5 hour drive)

Spend day at Holiday World

Drive to Louisville, KY (1.5 hour drive)

Spend night at hotel

DAY THREE

Check out of hotel

Spend morning/afternoon at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom

Drive home (6 hour drive)

That's still a LOT of driving to do after Kentucky Kingdom though. And the only reason I really want to go to Kentucky Kingdom is for Hellavator and the coasters. Is it possible to do Kentucky Kingdom in about 5 or 6 hours?

I hate to bring up an old topic, but I've got more to add on to my trip.

Our plan is this:

SUNDAY, JULY 9TH - Beech Bend Park in the evening

MONDAY, JULY 10TH - Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom

TUESDAY, JULY 11TH - Holiday World

WEDNESDAY, JULY 12TH - Indiana Beach in the afternoon evening

Because I'm not familiar with these parks and have no riding buddy, I'm looking for someone that might be interested in joining up with me at any or all of these parks on these days... so if you're interested, let me know, cause I'd love to hang out with another enthusiast for the day(s)!

I'm confused, It's Sunday June 11th today, but your trip starts on Sunday June 9th. If that's the case your trip isn't till 2013 or already happened in 2002? That or Holiday world has a special time machine your posting from.
