Astat
As long as things can fail, nothing is 100% safe. You can be close, but most times people are one burst hose or a bolt away from danger. Rocket coasters are no exception to the rule. Look at the two stratas. TTD chucked theming into the queue, sprayed shards of steel at people, and loves to pollute lagoons. Ka chucked brake fins into it's queue, scraped it's liner, and shot shards of miscelleneous metal around. All of those things were just "one of those things" where it was a small thing that went wrong and something big happened. I thought the tires on the back of the cars on TTD just started spinning one day and they took them off as a safety precaution?
shepp
^ I thought it was because they were rollback bait.

FlyingScooter
Here's KK's problem. Anyone remember the special on KK (discovery channel or travel channel?) One of the first things they said was:" We took the plans for Top Thrill Dragster and made a higher, faster coaster with one more hill!" That's right, let's copy a coaster that is down more than it's up/ spend 25 million on it and it should work better than the original, eventhough it is essentially the same thing... Nope, nothin' wrong there....
alpengeist04
I would have preferred a more unique coaster layout and not a record breaker, but KK was still pretty good. I think this years coaster will be a much better investment.
MattJackson
ok, fine. How would you all who call KK a clone design it? There aren't many methods of getting a coaster train to stratocoaster altitudes like that. TTD may not have had a huge break down like KK, but TTD has many small breakdowns. There was a breakdown of TTD at the end of the 2005 season that caused it to be down for the rest of the season. and the rediculous non-sense of TTD getting stuck at the top? Oh boy... FlyingScooter
TTD did get stuck on the top. In fact, there's a video somewhere here that shows it. I would've loved to been on that! ***found it: http://www.xtremecoastin.com/videos/misc_videos/ttdstuck_2005.htm
rjholla2003
At least TTD didn't seriously break down like a month after it opened! Nope. It breaks down for a month, re-opens for one weekend, and breaks down for another month to end the season. It all goes back to my "Intamin Problem" statement from the Kingda Ka POV thread. Ed
TTD's tires were removed because one of them fell off when it was coming down the 270 spiral. It could've easily gone into the queue or onto the path next to it, but it didn't so be thankful no-one was hurt in both accidents.

I would have it so that it launches, then take a big turn, then goes up the tower (which could still be as tall and with the length of KK's launch track, It could definitely get faster.) And at least with small breakdowns you know it's at least going to be open every day and you have an opportunity to ride it. If a big breakdown occurs, it is down for quite a while. rjholla2003
So you would make Dodonpa. With these 100+ launched coasters, there's only so much you can do with the land/money/combination of both that parks have. Sucks, but it's true. Untill a park has a lot of land, and a lot of money to spend, they are all going to be "launch-tophat-space filler-brakes", or "launch, overbank, hill, space filler, brakes." coasterlover420
Check out my coaster I posted for NL. That's the kind of design I meant.
rjholla2003
Just looking at the pictures you posted, I already see you made a better case for my argument. Think of how much steel that is. That would simply costs too much for any park to build. Then look at the footprint of the ride. That is simply too much land for most parks. The parks that do have the land don't have the money, or the desire. The park's that have the money, don't have the desire. Even with a more compact layout with less of those pesky BT problems that Real pointed out, something like my track "The Forgotten" is still a longshot due to land and costs.
