NEWS: "Bobsled Roller Coaster" coming to Kambarnir, Iceland

A group called Zalibuna is planning to set up a track for a one-person bobsled roller coaster in Kambarnir, close to where the Ring Road slings down Hellisheiði mountain pass towards Hveragerði in South Iceland, hoping to open it by spring 2015.

 

The idea was inspired by roller coasters in Europe. “Thirty-five such tracks have been set up in 11 countries. They’re common in ski resorts in Austria where they’re used in summer,” Sindri Rafn Sindrason at Zalibuna told Fréttablaðið.

 

“In Austria people ascend in cable cars or ski lifts but we will have transit cars for people when they come down to drive them back up,” Sindri added.

 

A student of the University of Iceland, Sindri said the idea had been born in an engineering class. His classmates Davíð Örn Símonarson, Skúli Sigurðsson and Dóra Björk Þrándardóttir are also involved in the project. They launched the project during the Startup Reykjavík event which started last week.

 

When asked when the track can open, Sindri responed, “The most optimistic goal is for next spring but that can only happen if everything works out in terms of licenses and funding. The realistic goal is the spring of 2015.

Is it pathetic that a teeny tiny portion of my being was weeping for joy at the fact that maybe a new Mack Bobsled coaster was being built?

Sounds like they still have a ways to go before this thing becomes reality. Don't think this is enough for a TPR stop on a trip to Europe!
