In a freak accident at an amusement park on the outskirts of Chennai, Afia Magh (20) from Nagaland, a flight attendant with Kingfisher Airlines, lost her life on Tuesday after she was thrown off a ride.

Police said three persons — the manager of EVP amusement park, operator and his assistant — have been arrested on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

According to reports, Afia was at the park with her friends. She suffered head injuries when she was thrown off the “Octopus Ride” — in which cars attached to five to eight arms pinned to a central axis spin and move up and down in random.

She was rushed to a nearby private hospital, where she was declared dead, said sources. The exact cause of death is being probed. — With PTI

This looks like some kind of knock-off - never seen this kind of Polyp before.

Nevertheless there was years age an accident with the Schwarzkopf Monster at Heide-Park were a kid - persumably too small to be properly hold by the lapbar - was ejected from the ride and heavily injured. The ride was inspected and as the safety systems were working according to TÜV regulations it was deduced to be a rider error and the ride returned to operation without changes.

Wow, no ordered use of seatbelts of

over-the-shoulder restraints???

We'd never get away with this thing in North

America, unless "all of the above" were

installed for "the public's safety"

(Unless of course, there IS one one these

things already here, somewhere in NA...)

My thoughts and healing words go out to the

woman's family and close friends.

The newer Monsters by Gerstlauer have individual hydraulic lapbars instead of one ratcheting lapbar for both riders. The latter can be a security problem if a big person rides together with a smaller person. Attendants at carnivals normally have an eye on this but in parks the not fully emloyed students are normally blind to this problem.

It's also difficult here to order new security measures to old rides or for examle cars. Each ride only has to abide the laws and regulations which were imposed when the ride was first sanctioned. Therefor there are still Musik-Express from the 30s with no lapbars at all or VW Beetles from the 40s with no seatbelts - cause they were not law at the time. The principle is called "Right to Prevail" here.

A current example: As of 2008 all new flats have to be fenced in like in the US - but all older can continue as they are no matter how long into the future they are operated. As a side-effect nearly no new flats go into operation now as showmen fear losses if rides are fenced in.

Public safety is not the same other places as it is in the West. When I was in China on a a bouncy ride, the operator never checked my lap bar. I had to close it when the ride started to move.
