Brandy524 Posted June 6, 2012 Posted June 6, 2012 First, a little background: Me, my husband, and a few friends of ours are working towards starting our own community theatre group here in Gadsden, Alabama. We're aiming for doing our first show (Brighton Beach Memoirs) at the end of August. Eventually we want to apply for non-profit status (totally different situation I'll need help with!), but until we get ourselves established and get a few shows under our belts, we're working as a fundraiser for a local historical society. We've come up with a name, The Yellowhammer Theatre. Here's where I need graphic design help. We need a logo. I can draw, but when it comes to computer graphic design, etc., my knowledge is extremely limited. Basically all I can do is download new fonts. Does anyone have any free time and want to take a stab at coming up with something? I can't really compensate you other than free theatre tickets if you're ever in Gadsden, Alabama, and probably a poster signed by the cast. But, hey, that poster may be worth something someday! And of course we would give you credit for the design in any programs, etc. We just want it to say The Yellowhammer Theatre, and incorporate a yellowhammer in it somehow. Any takers?
STR8FXXXINEDGE Posted June 7, 2012 Posted June 7, 2012 How about something like this? You could obviously have the background any color that you want it. Also, what kind of a file do you need? Can you use an Adobe Illustrator file? Feel free to tell me if you like it or not, or if you had something completely different in mind. I design logos, shirts, banners, etc. for people all the time, so I know how it goes, haha. EDIT: I didn't do my research. A Yellowhammer is a bird, not a hammer. I'm gonna keep the hammer design here, cause I think it's funny. But, here's an updated version with an actual Yellowhammer. Let me know what you think.
BeemerBoy Posted June 8, 2012 Posted June 8, 2012 I like 'em both! I'd go with the actual hammer just for the humor of it. lol
Brandy524 Posted June 8, 2012 Author Posted June 8, 2012 Looks great! We have a meeting Tuesday night and I'll show everyone and see what they think. I was starting to wonder if anyone was even interested in doing it; I know it was a lot to ask. So thank you!!
STR8FXXXINEDGE Posted June 9, 2012 Posted June 9, 2012 Alright, here's another updated version with the (hopefully) correct Yellowhammer bird. I tried to get as much detail in there as I could while still keeping it simple so it wont be a blob if you have to print it small. I also changed up the color of the lettering a bit so there's not as much contrast between it and the bird.
Brandy524 Posted June 9, 2012 Author Posted June 9, 2012 That looks awesome! Danny just gave me a history lesson on why the Alabama bird is called a yellowhammer but is not the actual yellowhammer. I had no idea! I guess I'm not the best Alabamian, lol.
STR8FXXXINEDGE Posted June 9, 2012 Posted June 9, 2012 Haha, that's funny. So, why is the Alabama bird called a Yellowhammer when it's not the actual Yellowhammer? After all of this, I'm curious to know. Glad you like it. Hope the others like it as well!
SharkTums Posted June 9, 2012 Posted June 9, 2012 Just letting you know I really like all the designs!
Brandy524 Posted June 11, 2012 Author Posted June 11, 2012 Danny and I both LOVE the latest one! He said that's definitely the right bird. I found a page that explains about the bird. Apparently the nickname came during the Civil War. http://www.outdooralabama.com/watchable-wildlife/Watchablearticles/yellow.cfm "During the Civil War, a cavalry unit from Huntsville joined up with Confederate forces in Kentucky. That Alabama cavalry unit wore new uniforms, trimmed in yellow. As thy rode by, the soldiers noticed the trim of the cavalry’s uniform and likened it to the yellow of the feathers from the flicker. They shouted “yellowhammer” as the troops rode by. From that point on, all Alabama troops were known as “yellowhammers.” The soldiers considered that name as a badge of honor and wore feathers in their hats and lapels even years after the war’s end when they attended reunions."
STR8FXXXINEDGE Posted June 11, 2012 Posted June 11, 2012 Interesting! I guess it all makes sense now. I found it funny that this was in the very first paragraph... "To those who have moved here from outside of this great state, if you say yellowhammer, they may mistakenly think that you are referring to a carpenter’s tool made by Stanley®, known for their yellow handles. I am quite sure that Stanley® tools are used in Alabama, but, in Alabama, a yellowhammer is the state bird!". Glad to know I wasn't just being an idiot, haha. Anyway, glad you two love it. Hopefully the others will, too.
STR8FXXXINEDGE Posted June 11, 2012 Posted June 11, 2012 Thanks, Scott! It's good to hear that people are liking it.
