Old Atlantic City indoor amusement park

Recommended Posts

Any east coast northerners remember an old amusement park inside one of the casinos in Atlantic City? For the life of me I cant remember the name but can still picture it in my head. I visited in the early 90s as kid just the one time and from what I remember they had a small coaster type ride and some small flat rides. Does this ring a bell to anyone?

Here's the best description of Tivoli Pier that I could find quickly online. From a 1998 New York Times article

Amusement Park: A Casino's Gamble

By DONALD JANSON

Published: October 09, 1988

A DECADE after the first casino opened here, the casino scene has added something totally different - a two-acre, $19 million indoor amusement park with a four-story Ferris wheel, a roller coaster and a fun house.

Officials of the casino that runs the park said it would offer diversion for gamblers and entertainment for non-gambling spouses and children and friends who accompany gamblers to Atlantic City.

Casino analysts expressed cautious optimism that the gamble on the park would be successful.

The entertainment center, called Tivoli Pier in recollection of the entertainment piers of the city's past, is part of a $193 million expansion of the Tropicana Hotel and Casino that comes with a name change to TropWorld Casino and Entertainment Resort. TropWorld is owned by Ramada Inns.

Besides its Ferris wheel centerpiece, the indoor midway also has bumper cars, pinball machines, a theater starring animated characters resembling big-name entertainers, a saloon presided over by a talking robot, shops, snack bars and, not yet open, a simulated space shuttle ride. Boardwalk-style rolling chairs take patrons on a ride past tableaus recalling Atlantic City history in tunnels illuminated with fiberoptic lighting. Hotel Tower Included

The new section of TropWorld, which also includes a hotel tower and new casino space, is designed to make it easy for the crowd to flow from the entertainment center to the casino, which has a well-marked entrance on the concourse near the Ferris wheel.

There were actually 2 places you could be thinking of- TropWorld and Ocean One.

Tropicana Casino built an amusement park with a ferris wheel, bumper cars, and other carnival type rides. They also had a Harry Anderson movie if I remember right....

The other was the shopping mall Ocean One outside of Cesears. They had a 3rd floor mini golf area, couple flat rides, and a large arcade in the back with a 2 story TV wall that blared MTV (when it still showed videos) and other stuff. There was also a great rib joint there called Jilly's....

Anyway, this was when I was a kid in the late 80's to early 90's.

Hope this helps!

I visited the Tropicana while construction for this was going on in 1987- then again in 1990 once the mini-Zierer coaster was added (BTW: You missed NOTHING!). The Biggest Six wheel sat in the middle of the atrium- and looked very similar to one of the money wheels that our "over 21" members would have seen inside the casino- all in all, it was an attempted diversion for the families- but like LV's attempt at parks- was a total bust. I was glad to have logged in this credit, though- as it's just about as rare as the Lightning Bolt at MGM-LV.

Thank you everyone first off. It's slowly coming back to me lol.

All I remeber, and it's vague, was a the small roller coaster sort of going up into the ceiling/tunnel and then coming back back down and then maybe the place having circular ramps going down to different levels. I wish I could find some pictures of it but so far no look sifting thru google for a few minutes.
