QueerRudie Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 Quite honestly, I'd only stick to TPR sanctioned RCT/NL etc contests being Front Page material. With the majority of the posters within the Game Thread falling between 13-18, most of them never complete the contest, let alone come up with really well hashed out ones. Once the Game Exchange goes live, we can add a "Contest" sub category, to easily differentiate entries. That being said, are there any other subcatergories you think we need? I am going to add "Patches/Trainers" as one option. Not surprised. I'm always rather taken aback by how little game software is on the shelves today. I miss the days of walking into an Egghead store, and spending an hour looking at titles. OK- Now I feel reallllly old... I too remember going to Egghead- and getting my first copy of SimCity... and SimAnt, and SimCity2000.... Patches and trainers- excellllent. Perhaps even a split-off category for Custom Scenery and Custom rides. Agreed on the TPR-Sanctioned rides/games contests. As for a contest idea: I've been thinking about this. I'd like to setup a 'test' run of a TPR-Sponsored game- a very basic RCT2 game (If the format works, it could be used for RCT3 as well as NL in 'concept' at least). The basics of the game are this: A basic park space is developed, and the contest-candidate must build a park based upon the specifications of the game. TPR gardens challenge: Robb and Elissa want to have the happiest place on earth, where Fluffy fluffy bunnies filled with medicine and goo are nowhere to be found. Build a park with XXXX rides and XXXX booths/food, and make it something they would like. You may (use/not use) Custom scenery. You may (use/not use) Custom rides. Your park may (be functioning/be static), The rides must be (realistic/full of imagination) and should contain an XXXXX(type of ride), an XXXXX(type of ride), and an XXXXX(type of ride). Elissa has stated that she wants an XXXXX to be her own personal TOGO coaster, so she wants an XXXXXX to be built. Your submissions must be loaded into the TPR Games Exchange by XX/XX/XXXX at 12:00. In order for you to compete, you MUST have the following title on it: [A.J.'s great idea for contest naming here]. You must also post a picture when you upload the file, and you must give us details on how you came up with the ideas. The XXXXXX parks will be then voted on by the TPR members, and the one with the highest number of votes will win... A SACRED TPR BAG OF CRAP! (insert TPR Gardens link to exchange where it is loaded) Good luck- and start building! - Now mind you, this is an -early- thought. Replace the XXXXXs with whatever is thought possible (I.E. number of rides, etc) and change the wording to fit the need of the contest that months, and all that's left is to come up with the basic format for the game level. Once the contest is then finalized, it can be moved to the front page, and advertising within the forums can begin- not to mention using the Social Media sites for promotion- a win-win situation. If it's OK with all- I'd like to go ahead and setup this format- if you have any ideas for refinement and changes, I'm open to it- But I think this is one of the easier things for us to be able to setup without too much difficulty all around. R.D.
A.J. Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 I likes it! Tonight I can spruce it up and post it to someone's approval. I like using the bold, white text to make the rules easier to understand.
robbalvey Posted February 9, 2011 Author Posted February 9, 2011 ^ Lets not get ahead of ourselves. I want all the tracks moved over and the exchange up and running for a bit before we start an actual contest. Like the topic says, start "thinking" about ideas, but we need to get the exchange in order and people on board with it first. I won't even have the point system in place for another week and that has to be done before it goes live.
A.J. Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Apologies. I got excited! Back to work then. Heh heh.
robbalvey Posted February 10, 2011 Author Posted February 10, 2011 ^ I know, I know...all in due time. As you can see from one of the threads in this forum we have been talking about the exchange since July of 2009. So while of course I want to get everything out there as soon as possible, we don't really rush into anything around here unless we know it's proven.
djbrcace1234 Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 Should we consider adding tutorials to the exchange as well? I can do a lot for the RCT2 series because a lot of the "standard" tutorials are being lost.
A.J. Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 (edited) Should we consider adding tutorials to the exchange as well? I can do a lot for the RCT2 series because a lot of the "standard" tutorials are being lost. Mcjaco and I went back and forth about that in another thread when I asked about posting guidelines for file upload stuff like exporting plug-in objects, etc etc. I'm thinking we should hold off on posting tutorials until the exchange goes live. Especially with head honcho away for a while - I always seem to screw up on Main Street when there's no manager around to call. I'd rather play it safe, y'know? I mean, we can prepare them (write 'em up in Word/Pages, etc), but at least hold off on posting them. One of us can do write-ups for a particular game, and the others can proofread them. I can write up stuff for every game we support except Scream Machines. I'm an RCT veteran! Edited February 11, 2011 by A.J.
mcjaco Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 If we do tutorials, they should all be in one "Sticky" for each game. The Sticky section will be a lot less cluttered once I get dmax's stuff posted to the Exchange, as well as some of the CS for RCT3. You can start drafting the Tutorial Thread in here, and once it's got enough stuff, I can move it into the Game Forum. We do that all the time with the Assistant Forum for PTRs, etc.
A.J. Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 (edited) Fantastic. So, who's going to do what? I can't do RCT1, because I don't have my disc with me down here in Orlando. I can do pretty much anything except hacking in RCT2. I can do pretty much anything except creating custom scenery, rides, and/or tracks in RCT3. I can do anything in NoLimits. I can't do Scream Machines, because I don't have it. Edited February 11, 2011 by A.J.
mcjaco Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 I think we'll just stick to RCT and NL. No need for Scream Machines. I think we've got a whopping two files on the Exchange for it anyway. Let's get the Exchange done, then this can be project #2.
QueerRudie Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 Sounds good about the Tutorials- I like the idea, as well as the different products we can build around it. BTW: I'm in SF for the next few days- (have to take care of BF for V-day; I'll be checking in and out of my e-mails as twere-) R.D.
robbalvey Posted February 22, 2011 Author Posted February 22, 2011 Back in town. Getting caught up on a few things. Looks like the "points system" has been added by the developer. I haven't had a chance to look at it yet. Have you guys noticed any additional functionality with it?
mcjaco Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 Looked at it briefly the other day. Not sure how to get it to work. Or how you had thought it might work.
robbalvey Posted February 22, 2011 Author Posted February 22, 2011 Here's some instructions: You can set following parmaters in manageconfig page POINTS_COUPON_ENABLE set 'true' will open coupon function POINTS_UPLOAD_TRACK point when upload a new track POINTS_DOWNLOAD_TRACK point when download a file POINTS_RANK_TRACK point when rank a track POINTS_GENERATE_COUPON set 0 will not generate coupon code POINTS_GENERATE_CODE set empty will generate an new coupon code with default amount POINTS_GENERATE_NOTICE will notify customer when generate coupon code You can edit notify email in /includes/language.php .
mcjaco Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 OK. Let me check this out tonight and play with it. Did you have any ideas on point values for items?
robbalvey Posted February 23, 2011 Author Posted February 23, 2011 Yeah I was thinking something like: Rank a file - 1 point download a file - 1 points Upload a file - 20 points Generate coupon = 500 points Basically, we need to make it so people can't really spam the system so we can't give away too many points for downloading and ranking.
mcjaco Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 You don't want to be sending out freebies all day? Cool. I check it out tonight. Seems simple enough. (Famous last words).
djbrcace1234 Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 25 files is a lot, but that seems to add up quickly on no limit submissions. Seems fair for 500 points.
robbalvey Posted February 24, 2011 Author Posted February 24, 2011 ^ And considering that a No Limits file is really small, I could probably upload 25 of them in about 30 minutes. We just will really have to watch out for people abusing the system. For example, there is nothing really stopping someone from taking 25 text files, renaming them to a .nolmits file, and uploading them just to get a free download. Or someone uploading the same file 25 times, etc.... Just something to keep an eye out for.
A.J. Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 The Upload > Delete > Upload > Delete way of spamming the system is really cheap. What exactly is "Generate Coupon"?
mcjaco Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 ^ We could deduct points for deleting. OK, I've set the Coupons for "true" and added point values......now what?
robbalvey Posted February 24, 2011 Author Posted February 24, 2011 ^ For testing, I would set it to something easy to generate one, like 1 point, and see if you get one added to your account!
mcjaco Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 AJ and dj, can you test to see if it's working? I can't download/upload stuff at work.
QueerRudie Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 I can give it a go- I'm at home today- R.D.
QueerRudie Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 (edited) Points system is working OK- Did 9 uploads in 12 minutes- and logged 180 pts along the way- Coupons generated works as well- Got 15.00 in coupons in my account listed! Just a thought: Perhaps we need to consider something along the lines of a 'daily limit' to uploading files- I.E. no more than 5 per day or such- it might work to prevent the 'get something for nothing' crowds out there?
