pianojohn
The press release for my new show! If you're coming down to HHN or Hallowscream in October, check out my show too! Thanks! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Local members of Actors Equity join forces to produce The World Premiere Showcase Presentation of John B deHaas’ HALLOWEEN The Musical (And, “Yes” - It is indeed based upon the 1978 John Carpenter horror film!) Orlando FL – Michael Wanzie & Kenny Howard of Wanzie Presents are delighted to announce the world premiere presentation of a new musical with book, lyrics and music by John B. deHaas, opening at the Footlight Theater at the Parliament House Resort on Saturday October 3 playing through and including Saturday October 31 – Halloween! In addition to playing every Saturday night in October, there will also be a special Industry Night performance on Monday October 26. All shows are at 8PM. Tickets ($15 donation) are available by logging-on to www.wanzie.com/boxoffice “The Night He Came Home! to SING!” Halloween: The Musical is a parody of the 1978 John Carpenter film that introduced pop culture to the maniacal chop guy Michael Myers and actress Jamie Lee (the babysitter) Curtis. Campy, funny, and tuneful, Halloween: The Musical follows the residents of Haddonfield, Illinois on that fateful Halloween night when institutionalized killer Michael Meyers escapes the loony bin to have a bloody good time back in the old neighborhood. In DeHass’ musical version the cast of six tackle 19 different roles during the one-hour show, which includes actor John Graham who portrayed Bob in the original 1978 film. Other cast members include Shawn Walsh (Theme Park Diva Orlando Fringe 2003, 2005), Juan Cantu (Finding Nemo: The Musical), Jenn Warren (Theme Park Diva Orlando Fringe 2005 and Finding Nemo), Andrea Dunn Stack (Finding Nemo: The Musical)and David Houde (Theme Park Diva Orlando Fringe 2003, 2005 and Beauty & the Beast). Bringing The Warped Idea To Life Book, music, and lyrics were created by John B. deHaas, the creative mind behind the Orlando Fringe hit Theme Park Diva and the creator of music and lyrics for The Screw You Revue, Screwged, and Screw You: Déjà vu. John is an Orlando Fringe Festival four-time Patron Pick winner, who conceived of this deliciously all-wrong-for-the-right-reasons musical project. Douglas White who Choreographed When Pigs Fly (Orlando Fringe 08) and Directed Edges: A Song Cycle (Orlando Fringe 09) has been engaged to direct Halloween: The Musical. White’s D Squared Productions will also costume the show. Mr. deHass has created some very fine musical arrangements for keyboard and cello for the production. Extremely gifted cellist Paul Leiner does deHaas’ oft times eerie arrangements great justice while occasionally riffing on his own to perfect horror film underscoring effect. The two musicians will accompany the cast nightly, live on stage. FAST FACTS Wanzie Presents JC DH MM JW SW Productions’ HALLOWEEN The Musical The Night He Came Home to SING! pianojohn
Our review: 'Halloween the Musical' at the Footlight Theater By Elizabeth Maupin Sentinel Theater Critic It’s a wonder that nobody ever thought of this before — a musical version of the proto-slasher movie Halloween and the inevitable tag line “the night he came home – to sing!” So credit the ubiquitous Orlando musical-theater guy John B. deHaas with coming up with Halloween the Musical. And then give him a whole bunch more Brownie points for coming up with a musical that makes you laugh a whole lot of the time. Of course it doesn’t take a pack of production values to remake Halloween, the low-budget 1978 horror pic that famously scared the stuffing out of baby-sitters everywhere with a $1.98 William Shatner fright-mask. DeHaas has on hand six actors, no set to speak of and an avalanche of tacky wigs. But that’s all it takes to bring music to the doomed town of Haddonfield, where the baby-sitters really need to stop opening the door. What deHaas does have is a chorus of ghouls singing about the boogeyman (sample lyrics: “The boogey man, the boogeyman, the boogey-boogey-boogey-boogey-boogeyman”) and making it very clear what you’re in for: “When he’s ripped out your heart and spleen / you’ll feel real hollow this Halloween.” And in his corner there’s a bunch of game souls (all Disney regulars) who are happy to play the movie’s stock figures — babysitter Laurie, scared little Tommy, Sheriff Brackett and the like. David Houde brings spunk to his very tall Laurie; Juan Cantu gives a mighty voice to Brackett; and John Graham — a teenage murder victim in the original film — lends a weird meta-reality to the show, in which he doubles as psychologist Sam Loomis and as himself as Hollywood star. This hourlong Halloween runs out of steam halfway through, and many of the pop-cultural in-jokes fall flat. But the show still has a girl-group song, and a Music Man song, and a whole bunch of minor characters trying to stre-e-e-etch their parts. Best of all, deHaas gives Michael Myers a raison d’être that’s absolutely right for a spate of murders that take place in the trick-or-treating season. All fictional slashers should have such a defense. Elizabeth Maupin can be reached at emaupin@orlandosentinel.com or 407-420-5426.
