traincrossin Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 I was recently on a college trip in the St. Louis area and went to Six Flags St. Louis for an afternoon hoping to get on every coaster in 5 hours. Six Flags St. Louis is very nice for a park of its size. While it doesn't have the biggest coasters around, it still seems fairly well rounded. My favorite coaster had to be Evel Knievel. It was my first GCI coaster and I loved every bit of it! There were lots of awesome curves and pops of airtime throughout the ride. Another surprise was Mr. Freeze. The launch was nice but going through that inverted top-hat backwards with only a lapbar was my favorite part of the ride. I did take some video at the park so hopefully i'll have that up in a week or two. Enough of my random ramblings, onto some pics. I do have larger and higher quality versions of every pic if anyone would want a copy. Also, I suck at captions so bear with me. Night rides on Evel were way better than during the day! I was able to ride in the front and the back and it was a tie between the two. Overall it was a very nice day. Thanks for reading! Now imagine an enterprise with the seats facing outwards attatched to a giant frisbee. That makes this one of the most unique rides ever! Unfortunately I didn't get any daytime pics of Xcalibur. Who knew that villains liked mexican food? Batman has the longest line ever, not because it's crowded but just because it takes 5 minutes to walk through with no switchbacks open. It's like i'm looking in a mirror... Doesn't that just look lovely? Ninja, smoother than Screamin' Eagle. Although you can't see it, this ride has a tunnel which instantly makes it cool. Since when did a river need a king? And since when did a river need a train? Yup, it's a tree. Didn't I tell you I suck at captions? Is that the St. Louis arch? After riding I realized that the eagle was screaming in pain. It wasn't horribly rough, but it didn't make the ride any better. Next up was Screamin' Eagle. Mr. Freeze off in the distance. You might think that's the first drop, but it's actually part of the strange layout that is The Boss. When I saw this I thought that The Boss was going to be the Iron Wolf of wooden coasters. Oh no, The Boss is on fire! Lifty lift lift lift lift. What is up with Six Flags St. Louis naming rides after people? A cool part about Mr. Freeze is the dual loading station and the fact that the lights dim whenever a train launches. I nominate Mr. Freeze for the most shades of blue used on any coaster. It's big and blue and now it has you. Mr. Freeze is the coolest coaster on the planet, if by "cool" you mean ridiculously hot inside the queue. Does anyone actually follow the second rule? Because we all love the chainlift. Is that a stuffed animal behind the chain? Upskirt shot of Evel Wood, wood, and more wood. *drool* First up is the GCI goodness known as Evel Knievel. It's always fun going to a new park! Here's the entrance area. Why does this ride seem so familiar? Welcome to St. Louis!
jbarner14 Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 Good Photo TR. I was actually there that day too. I was only there for a few hours though: I got my coasters and left.
traincrossin Posted August 25, 2009 Author Posted August 25, 2009 I finally was able to upload the video the other night. Hopefully it's half-decent. Enjoy! [coastertube]http://www.themeparkreview.com/coastertube/play.php?vid=SFStL_i76l[/coastertube]
Team Thriller Posted August 25, 2009 Posted August 25, 2009 Where you kidding saying Ninja is smoother than the Screamin Eagle? I know I rode them a few years back. But Ninja is down near the bottom of my rankings for coasters. It was very rough! Screamin Eagle was actually one of my favorites of that trip. --James
traincrossin Posted August 25, 2009 Author Posted August 25, 2009 ^I might have just gotten a bad ride on Eagle, but I got no airtime in the back row and it was very rough so I really didn't like it. That was actually a direct quote from a mom who was waiting for her kids to get off Ninja and I had to agree with her on that one.
jjb297 Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 Did you find the Boss rougher than Screaming Eagle? I go to SFSTL often, but have not ridden the Boss this year due to bad previous experiences. I did hear it was better due to retracking work though. If Boss is still rougher than Screaming Eagle, than they definitely have more work to do...
steel Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 I agree that Screamin' Eagle is not nearly as bad as Ninja. Screamin Eagle isn't particularly forceful, but I wouldn't call it painful. I think that Boss isn't that bad, even in the back. Other than the helix, it's pretty enjoyable and intense. This is a nicer park than it gets credit for being, I think. It's no Great America, but it's a nice place to spend some time.

Considering everyone else is saying that Screamin Eagle isn't rough, I wouldn't take my word but I thought Screamin Eagle was worse than The Boss. While they were both rough, they weren't that bad.
jjb297 Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 Before 2006, the park I don't think deserved attention. Now, with 2 new coasters, cleaner park, new multi-million-dollar parade and new waterslides, the park is clearly getting a lot of attention from SFSTL management and the corporation itself. Next year it would be nice to get another "specialty" waterpark slide (ie. bowl slide) or a dark ride, as a new coaster seems very unlikely. A Hyper in 2011 would put STL on the map big time, like with Goliath at SFOG. I need to ride one after another (Boss after Screaming Eagle) this year, but I remember from 2008 Screaming Eagle being rougher. The Boss definitely gives a different ride each time it seems. Maybe it depends on which train you get?
some sort of coaster dude Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 by total benevolence and providence my high school band trip went to SFSL on Boss's opening day, which was a bit earlier than they predicted 4-26 is my recollection, but mr freeze was closed, i have never been on it it was closed all the times i went to six flags over texas, which might 2 is the spinning coaster nice?
traincrossin Posted August 26, 2009 Author Posted August 26, 2009 is the spinning coaster nice? Tony Hawk's Big Spin is a pretty average coaster for me. Fun for the entire family, a couple cool moments, plus is better than your average wild mouse coaster. So yes, I would say it's nice. Plus it's cool seeing Tony Hawk footage in the queue instead of the normal Six Flags advertising.
jjb297 Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 Its a clone of the SFOT and SFFT rides I think, but SFDK Tony Hawk Big Spin is different then the other three according to rcdb.com. I would say its 5th best at SFSTL, after Mr. Freeze, Evel Knieval, B: TR and Boss, but before Sreaming Eagle, the Mine Train and Ninja. Its much smoother than any wild mouse coaster.
coastersfosho Posted August 27, 2009 Posted August 27, 2009 whats the name of the song? great vid by the way
coasterfan21 Posted August 27, 2009 Posted August 27, 2009 Ya he might have just had a bad ride on Screaming Eagle. Though I have never been to SFSTL I have had 2 completely different ride experiences on coasters by just moving a few rows forward or back. Like on Wildcat at Lake Compounce, which to me was very rough in the back but near the front it was a great little wooden coaster. Plus with wooden coasters you never know how they are going to throw you, from ride to ride. Nice TR by the way, I hope you had a great day at SFSTL.
traincrossin Posted August 27, 2009 Author Posted August 27, 2009 whats the name of the song? great vid by the way The song is Can't Slow Down (Radio Edit) by Robert M. Glad you liked the video!
