Hercules Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 (edited) First, I would like to say thank you to Robb for giving me permission to post this, and for the kind words of good luck! I would like to announce a new organization that I am extremely happy to be a part of, and have been working on for the last couple of months, and very extensively for the the extent of this long holiday weekend - a big shout out goes to Henning's Marketing in Harleysville, PA for allowing us to use their dining terrace with their free wifi for about 45 hours from Friday until today. I would also like to thank a great person - Tricia Ciucci - my best friend in the world, and the brainpower behind this new venture. I would like to announce - Thunder's Angels Dog Rescue. Thunder's Angels is an incorporated, non-profit organization that rescues dogs from animal control facilities where they are scheduled to be killed in gas chambers by carbon monoxide poisoning. It is also dedicated to our cherished dog, Thunder, who sadly passed away on July 31, 2008 after 12 great years - we are looking to carry on his legacy with this organization, and try to save as many dogs from a tragic, inhumane death. I am going to use this thread as a source of information about the organization, place to share information about the cruelty of gas chambers as a form of euthanasia, forum to give information on how you can help, way you can learn how to adopt dogs that go through our program, and show how you may be able to volunteer for our organization. I will not bog you down with too much information in this initial post, but just want to shed some light on our new organization. We have been working very hard on our new website - www.helpsaveme.org Please feel free to check it out, and give some creative criticism if you feel fit. It is a work in progress, but it is a great source for information about gassing shelters, has cute dogs listed that are URGENT to get adopted, dogs that are currently in foster care, and a lot of information about how you can help, or adopt any of the dogs currently going through our system. You can also add us as a friend on Facebook. Just search Thunder's Angels, and add us today! We would greatly appreciate it. You can also follow us on Twitter, @ThundersAngels. We are currently looking for dedicated volunteers and fosters. Fostering is providing a temporary home for dogs that have been pulled from the shelter until they are adopted by a forever parent. If you are in the Philadelphia, Delaware, or New Jersey area, please feel free to fill out a volunteer or foster application, and we would love to have you with us. Even if you can only dedicate a few hours a week, you will still be a great help! Just visit http://www.helpsaveme.org/how-you-can-help.php to download an application. Now, if you got through all of that, thank you for your time. I look forward to all of this, and thank you to anyone that can help, adds us as friends, or simply just offers words of support! So, please meet out very first DOG OF THE WEEK! Petunia... My name is Petunia. I am an adult female mix between a Border Collie and a Basset Hound. Don't you love my cute stubby legs? To adopt me, please go to helpsaveme.org, fill out an application, and give me a loving home! Edited November 3, 2010 by Hercules
dandaman Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 It's really some great work you're doing there; the world could use more organizations like this. Nice job on the site, too! (Note: In the OP, the link technically ends with the period of the sentence, so it doesn't actually give the page.) Seriously, this is an amazing thing you're doing, and best of luck!
Hercules Posted May 26, 2009 Author Posted May 26, 2009 Thanks a lot! I greatly appreciated the kind words! Our new adoption application, and foster guildelines are now up in .pdf form. We also added a TON of great dogs to our system last night that are awaiting adoption! Like Dory! A great little black lab puppy needing a home! If you would like to adopt or sponsor Dory, please contact thundersangels@yahoo.com!
coasterdude5 Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 What you're doing truly is great. That video on the homepage really brings it into perspective how many dogs in "shelters" are put down.
frozenflames Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 As a new owner of a recently-rescued dog (she had been in a puppy mill, the poor thing), I can only say that this is great. Dogs should never be put through awful conditions, and helping to give a mistreated animal a second chance at having a good life is one of the best things anyone could ever do.
Hercules Posted May 26, 2009 Author Posted May 26, 2009 Thank you very much for your words! I can't begin to explain the OVERWHELMING response we are getting at this point in time. After "officially" launching yesterday, we have ALREADY saved 1 dog from the gas chamber, and I just recieved interest for another off of the website, so there is another adoption application pending. Also, we have received our first donation! On top of that, we have had over 1,000 hits to our website, helpsaveme.org , since yesterday. That is in less than 24 hours! Take that Big Mike!
moinab Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 I love Petunia!!!!! If only I lived in PA. And didn't rent. I'm sure she will find a wonderful home, if she hasn't already! Best of luck to you! I'm going to pass the link along to my NJ/PA area friends.
Hercules Posted May 27, 2009 Author Posted May 27, 2009 ^ Thank you for your support! And actually, that is the great thing about our organization. You do not have to be in a specific area to adopt! Just because we are located in the Philadelphia area, does not limit our adoption capability. We are currently working with a couple of organizations in the North Carolina area. The dogs that you see listed on the site, although it is not noted, are currently in gassing shelters in North Carolina and Georgia. We are looking for adopters throughout the country. We would be able to transport the dog to your loving home location. These transports are not new. There are actually a lot of organizations that do transports from shelters the south or Ohio, and bring the dogs to the Northeast, or elsewhere. Voluteers will actually drive 1-2 hour legs of the trip. For example, a transport from Nashville, TN to Hartford, CT could be broken down into 20-40 different legs, with 20-40 different volunteers donating their time and energy in driving the dogs to safety. However, we are one of the few organizations that focus specifically on gas chamber shelters. We are focusing on transporting from very high kill rate shelters. We have focused at this time on Spalding County, GA and pretty much all of North Carolina. Just to give you an idea of the numbers, in 2007 218,350 animals were gassed to death in the state of North Carolina alone. We hope to save dogs from that area, and influence local legislation to stop gassing.
moinab Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 That is fantastic! I swear, if we could have pets in our rental house, I would take Petunia. I totally fell in love at first sight! I used to volunteer every Sunday at a no-kill cat shelter in Minneapolis. Rescue organizations are very dear, to me!
BeemerBoy Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 Bump! Jay, I meant to respond to this when you originally posted, but somehow forgot to. I just spent some time looking over the website, and it horrifies me to learn of the gassing methods. A close relative of ours has her own business as a petsitter, and is heavily involved with our local humane society and adoption center to help do her part as well. Because of this, I'm always helping out with her overflow of pet sits, and random stuff. I see the devotion and effort she and her husband put into it, and it certainly shows with what you're doing here as well! Kudos on an excellent site, and your continued hard work for our friends without voices.
Hercules Posted October 28, 2013 Author Posted October 28, 2013 This is a major bump but I figured I would posy this here: http://www.youcaring.com/medical-fundraiser/thunder-s-angels-needs-you-/100287
