martinb
Sorry to start another topic on this, as I already have a topic about Cali, but I needed to draw some attention to a specific 'thing'. I went on Hertz' website to get a price on hiring a car for a couple of days, and when the prices came up, there were 2 different pricing columns running down beside each car type, one was; 'Pay on return' - Where you pay for the car after you've hired it. And the other; 'Pre-pay online' - Where you pre-pay for the car hire when you book/reserve it. The one thing that struck me as add though, was the price difference for each pricing system. The 'Pay on return' price was about $117, where as the 'Pre-pay online' was about £147. That strikes me as quite a difference, anyone used Hertz before and could help me out pwease? ebl
Looks like pre-paying really "Hertz" Sorry, couldn't pass that one up! Whenever I rent a car, I've always just paid upon return. Sounds like it's less expensive. Eric
ChrisZer0
Prepay supposedly saves you money. From my experience, its all about the same when it comes to total cost at the end of the day. Heres a question for you martin, renting at the airport or off site?
mash80
I've been looking at renting a car from a few European locations recently, mainly Germany and Holland, and experienced the same price difference but opposite. ie. the pre-pay online was significantly cheaper than the pay on return price. Pretty sure it was Hertz I was looking at too. Just want to make sure you've got it the right way so you don't end up spending more by mistake. It could of course just be a regional difference. Sir Clinksalot
From past history of renting cars, Hertz always seems to be the most expensive. I've had good luck with Enterprise quite a few times.
larrygator
^^^^^You must be doing something wrong because the Hertz website says it is cheaper to pre-pay, and also explains why.
ChrisZer0
I mainly use enterprise, as I get a discount with my AAA memebership or using entertainment book coupons for a better deal. Thats how im rolling when im in LA this fall...
martinb
Heres a question for you martin, renting at the airport or off site? If 'off site' means not at the airport, then thats what I'm doing. They're located just one block from my hotel. ^^^^^You must be doing something wrong because the Hertz website says it is cheaper to pre-pay, and also explains why. Me? I've done it a few times now and it comes out the same each time. Could some one else find the time to do exactly what I done to see what price it comes out at? Pick up at 9.00am Saturday 12th September and drop off Monday 14th 9.00am, with the Neverlost sat nav. Oh and its from their 'Downtown Anahiem HLE" branch. mash80
Hmmm, I get the same thing as you when trying it. The top 5 (the smallest cars) are all significantly cheaper to pay on return. Even more significant when you consider the exchange rate, as the pay on return price is in USD and the pre-pay price is in GBP, in fact for all those 5 cars it costs more than double at todays exchange rate. Seems very strange to me, can't think of many instances where you get such a discount for paying later. One thing I did notice was that it says; 'Pre-Pay Online rates include: Loss Damage Waiver, Tax, Liability Insurance Supplement, Vehicle Licensing Cost Recovery, Transaction Fee'. All the ones I have looked at in Europe have these included in the pay on return prices too. Maybe this is the reason? Could these double the price? I took a screenshot. These are without the sat nav.
larrygator
That just makes no sense. Why do they show US $ for one cost and GBP for the other option. 'Pre-Pay Online rates include: Loss Damage Waiver, Tax, Liability Insurance Supplement, Vehicle Licensing Cost Recovery, Transaction Fee' - that could reflect the difference, as you may not be able to decline these options with pre-pay. cedarpointfangirl
Have you thought about trying the "name your own price" on Priceline. I will be heading out for WCB early Saturday morning and will be renting a car at LAX. I looked around for a few days when I was planning my trip and every site that I went to the cars were just pricey, and that was with my corporate discount from Bank of America. I will have the car for three days, the best deal I could find before I hit Priceline was about 180.00 for 3 days. I named my own price and got a compact car through Hertz, tax included, for 110.00 bucks. That was 25 dollars a day, plus tax. That saved me a really good amount of money. Most places wanted 60-80 bucks a day. This is also a pre-pay, you have to pay right on the spot when priceline accepts your price.
