MASH80554077
I rode Voodoo at Dorney and on the back spike the holding break makes a freaky screachy noise. Is this like a cool effect? It sounds like it is supposed to make that noise. Could anyone tell me for sure?
Y2J2003Y2J
Yes it is, that is the sound of the LIMs on the spike holding the train up. I would assume it takes a lot of power to hold that train up. If you listen carefully you can hear the similarities in the sound of the launch and the holding brakes.
CoasterEricHP
Yeah when it launches in the station it gives out a similar SCREEEEECCHHHH that sounds like a person dying very traumatically. Â In my opinion they should just stop using the holding brake. I think it kind of ruins the last big drop. Save some electricity!
Guest
V2 and Wicked Twister both make the same noise as well, during the launch for WT and on the brake as well as the launch on V2. It makes an even stranger noise when pushing the train back into the station after the ride has completed.
jamesdillaman
Just be happy the brake is on, the last time I rode it (at Geauga Lake) the brake wasn't turned on, and the back spike (with no twist and no holding brake) was a total letdown. Tmcdllr
LIMs are very interesting. Even though there are no moving parts (except for the fins on the train if that counts) or swords that actually make contact with the brakes causing friction and wear, they still make all kinds of noise. Is all that noise just the electrical current going through them causing the 'screechy brake sound? I could understand if it was a friction type brake with moving parts but I don't get this. I guess if you have an electric motor (which is basically what they are if you unrolled the stator) that big with that much current going through it would be pretty loud. But what is it exactly that is making the noise?
vacoaster
Well I work at V2 at SFGAM and there's nothing to worry about. The sounds are perfectly normal for these rides.
mattnz
The sound is normal for LIM launches or brakes. But then of course coasters can often be noisy things... If it's not LIMs it's an Intamin 'fart', Intamin 'rattle' or a B&M 'roar'. But for me nothing compares to a Schwarzkopf Shuttle Loop launch! Music to my ears!
