Loopy Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 In an effort to get this thread back on track: Any estimate on number of pieces used? ADMIN EDIT: Edited out unnecessary comment. The flaming stops here.
dandaman Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 Wow... even K'nex coasters come with their own controversy kit. We all know if this was built in CP's parking lot, it would be the "BEST NEW RIDE OF 2008"... actually, if I were to see this in person, I'd model mini-trash cans and place them every 10 centimetres. In short, this thing is awesome.
mcjaco Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 This is fast heading for a lockdown. Some of you are about to get a 24 Hour time out. Congrats.
tkkyj Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 I am impressed that something so big is able to stand on its own. That is pretty good engineering itself. I can't believe a bunch of people registered here just to point out bumps in the track from photos shot just as it was assembled for the first time! This thing is giant, and most people are only going to see it in pictures from afar. I think it is awesome. How much did it cost to build? How did you get a firetruck? ADMIN EDIT: REMOVED QUOTE. ALL OF YOU STOP NOW!!!!!
nagro5 Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 Is someone from some type of world record book going to come and make this official? If they are, will your name be in there? How awesome would that be?!?! Personally I think that it's really cool and that we all need to stop arguing. Who cares if it's bumpy! I'm just admiring everyone who helped to make this thing possible. Thanks for sharing this Ccron10.
Loopy Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 ^Exactly. The structure in monstrous. It's not as if we will have little tiny people getting off the ride, and asking if Vekoma designed it
TopThrillDragster33 Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 The only reason I joined was to say this. I am the previous record holder and I will let you know that Cosi, Michael and I worked very hard on Particle Accelerator to push it's height to the max. I wanted to inform everyone that our 40 ft. was indeed free-standing, although we used a cable to help with construction (to help make it more stable when we were placing parts on top) we took that off before we launched the car around the track and never putting the cable back on, there by making it free-standing. And just to let you know, I was bashed about everything that was wrong with my coaster as well.
dockers Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 It's nice to see a proportional record breaker, but oh my god that thing is bumpy. That would hurt more than Villain, Mean Streak, Cyclone, Boss, SLCs, Arrows, Boomerangs, and go-karting thru a pothole.
Ccron10 Posted July 3, 2008 Author Posted July 3, 2008 Alright. I don't have any pics to show you guys, but hopefully I will tomorrow of today's progress. We did a massive renovation on the incline. It was smooth on Tuesday but not smooth enough. We were having a problem of the car rocketing down the launch track at such a fast spped that it would just plow into the base of the incline and shatter the pieces (in one case it would throw pieces into the nearby parking lot which was over 25 feet away). The highest launch we got today was just 4 feet from the top or just before the turn. Just be fore we called it quits we tried launching it vertically (like the other guy did). We used one rubberband chain, pulled it back as far as we could and we got it up to the 4th support. All we will need is a few more rubberbands and more power and we should be able to have this thing over by tonight. Here are a few news links: From Monday: http://wfmz.com/view/?id=291140 From Tuesday: http://video.nbc10.com/player/?id=271662#videoid=271661 This video briefly shows the modified incline, but we re-did this one. More Soon.
Ccron10 Posted July 3, 2008 Author Posted July 3, 2008 It's not my project. I'm only helping out with it. Is someone from some type of world record book going to come and make this official? By the way, Brandon said that K'nex is going to try to get Guinness to fly out before we take it down which might be tomorrow. This coaster might be on eBay for sale.
Ccron10 Posted July 4, 2008 Author Posted July 4, 2008 We have some bad news. Yesterday was pretty windy out and you could probably guess what happened next. At 11:04 AM a big gust of wind came along and caused the world's tallest K'nex roller coaster to collapse. That morning Brandon got the coaster car only 3 feet from the top. If the weather wasn't as bad, we would've gotten it over. That afternoon we all cleaned up most of the pieces and placed them into seperate bags. When we got most of those done, we all went down the street for dinner to celebrate the world record achievement. When we got back we all did a little PR since the carnival was open and people were walking up to it. Around 6:30 2 friends of mine came and I decided to hang out with them for a little bit. 1/2 hour later a storm came in which caused me say goodbye to them and run back to the K'nex coaster when it's pouring down rain because I had my camera sitting out. Luckly for me I had it in a case, so only that was wet, not the camera. After the storm went by we picked up more pieces and called it a day. Today we plan to reassemble the coaster again in sections and glue the pieces together and plan to sell it on eBay. We are all thinking about getting a team together and thinking about our next project. HP's Fahrenheit? The Eiffel Tower? EDIT: Here are a few pictures from yesterday. They might be a little bright, but I had the camera set on nighttime. More soon. Here's the carnival from the coaster site. A bunch of other sections that somehow managed to stay together. POV on the launch track (or what's left of it). This is what's left of it.
dandaman Posted July 4, 2008 Posted July 4, 2008 Ahhhh... that's gotta be heartbreaking. Did Guinness manage to make it out there before the impromptu demolition?
Ccron10 Posted July 4, 2008 Author Posted July 4, 2008 Brandon would still need to figure that out, but I think K'nex will regonize it as the world's tallest freestanding coaster. This afternoon we moved all the pieces to be moved to a drier location and reassemble the parts and glue them together. We will then put the coaster on eBay for sale. Also some good news, but it's not confirmed yet. Our next project may be recreating Fahrenheit at Hersheypark out of K'nex.
nagro5 Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 Ugh, that sucks! I hope you guys do Fahrenheit. I wonder if Hershey Park will let you guys build it next to the ride. That would be cool!
Canobie Coaster Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 Sad to see it demolished, but the ride looked really cool and really must have been an accomplishment. Fahrenheit would be sick to see!
chemical_echo Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 This afternoon we moved all the pieces to be moved to a drier location and reassemble the parts and glue them together. We will then put the coaster on eBay for sale. So, you're going to glue the pieces together and then sell it on eBay? How do you plan on shipping a 36ft tall and 50ft long K'nex coaster that's been glued together? You might want to re-think that plan.
pacoasterrider Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 I'm curious how much that cost? I mean, Knex aren't the cheapest things in the world. It's a solid price for just the puny little coaster sets. Great job on it.
downunder Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 Sorry to hear about it falling down, it was really impressive, whether or not it was a record breaker. I really appreciate the amount of effort and time it would have taken to construct it. I'm also curious how most people could afford that much knex or are you one of Bill Gates children?
Ccron10 Posted July 9, 2008 Author Posted July 9, 2008 We basically got most of the K'nex from donations and that was $6,000 worth. Expect a new thread solely for the Fahrenheit Project coming possibly tomorrow!
