Help with abbreviations/jargon

Hey people, I'm new and feeling a little retarded, what I'm looking for is maybe a list of coaster/ride terms you all seem to use so fluently, I mean I understand SFMM means Six Flags Magic Mountain, bit some of the other terms I cant figure out..... for instance SLC, I'm guessing, Suspended Looping Coaster? Im sure thats wrong, and y'all are giggling, Is there a list available, or do I just need to make an boob of myself till I figure it all out......... Thanks

Well first I want to congratulate you on your "coming out" of the coaster enthusiast closet! Yes, you are right: SLC does stand for suspended looping coaster. There are plenty of websites for coaster definitions and jargon. One good website is: http://themeparks.about.com/cs/coasterbooks/a/coasterspeak.htm ...

 

This dictionary gives you a good basic sense of the jargon for roller coasters. If you read some of the other threads on here, some of the other members get really technical about the rides, and if you read through those you can learn the terms really quickly (not to mention you get smarter). My first post was about SLC's too. I thought it stood for steel looping coaster, like in RCT2. Oops!

You answered your own question, but don't even know it.

 

Vekoma's SLCs are Susepended Looping Coaters, because they actually are the same as suspended coasters, only they have those pistons in place to keep the car fairly in place. But the car is free to move side to side somewhat. (that is a major reason why SLCs produce head banging).

 

B&M/Intamin inverted coasters have the train physically locked to the track, producing a much smoother ride with no side to side motion. I think B&M/Intamin have a patent preventing companies like Vekoma from going fully inverted. Though that could be a bit of an urban legend.

Incredible, I didn't know they even made suspended loopers with any give or swing at all, I figured it would cause all kinds of death and destruction, I'm of course more for the smooth, trauma free experience, so should I stay away from Vekoma SLC's to keep my head-wound count down?

A "credit" is simply a coaster that you have ridden. If i've been on 50 coasters, I have 50 credits.

 

The donkey thing is a little random and (as far as i'm aware) has no significant meaning at all.

Jeff is what we term a "credit whore", though that's singling him out a bit, there are many of them. Basically people who will ride anything to increase their count. It's just an in joke thing

^^ IMO, I think that credit whoring sometimes has an interesting way of bringing people closer together, build great friendships, and making you scream until your lungs scar... but it's all good fun in the end. A great thing to do is to sign up for a TPR trip if you can, they are the pinnacle of coaster enthusiast fun... and if you can't you can always browse videos of their trips

Thanks all, for answering my questions, I've got this year pretty well scheduled, Italy (maybe Gardaland) and Paris (maybe Disney) at the end of July, then, I was thinking about Six Flags Fiesta Texas in October, but I dont know which group to Join/go with, until then I guess I could squeeze in a few more visits to SFOT as I live very near Dallas, I actually went for my B day beginning of June, and was surprized at how un-crowded it was, It was like ERT all day long (he he he look Im using coaster speak) LOL

 

Hopefully in 09 I can do one of the TPR trips!

In which case I guess the phrase applies: "It takes one to know one...". I think that it is much more interesting (and fun) to talk to people about something you share a deep interest in; and that they enjoy as well. You learn more. For example, if I were to talk to a person who didn't like roller coasters (and the physics of them to an extent) about how many g's of force on a coaster a person can handle before they grey out... they wouldn't understand. However, you can use that to your advantage by teaching them (if they are interested of course) about your interest using the jargon that you know, and you will be known as a enthusiast in no time (even though it seems you are learning fast).

Yes, I've even noticed some of the non enthusiasts find it wierd or even creepy, thats why its so nice to have a place to meet people who get that "airtime" is a great way to escape the daily grind...

This is a good topic to raise, there are two types of jargon on Theme Park Review, general coaster jargon and acronyms and more stuff that is native to TPR. I believe there was some kind TPR Dictionary thead but I can't find it anymore.

 

Hell, I used to think ERT was Early Ride Time.
