Nemmy Posted June 22, 2005 Posted June 22, 2005 Good News: The DBH is in the news. Bad News: The article sucks. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/features/lifestyle/sfl-licoasterjun21,0,4577655.story Mistakes: 1. It's not the tallest coaster in Florida. 2. The lap bar doesn't come down, you pull it down. 3. "Round" implies that there's a helix, which there isn't. 4. I didn't realize that a wooden coaster could have a corkscrew. 5. The coaster is a minute and ten seconds. That's not two minutes. Even if there were no mistakes, the article is written very immaturely.
Coasters 4 ever Posted June 22, 2005 Posted June 22, 2005 Even I could write a better article than that! That thing is horrible.
Guest Posted June 22, 2005 Posted June 22, 2005 OW! Corkscrew on a woodie? A corkscrew hurts on a steelie. While I agree with both of your statements, why don't you email the gentleman that wrote the article, I saw his email address at the bottom, and tell him that maybe he should do a little more research on his coastes, BEFORE he writes an informative article. Just my opinion. Katie
Nemmy Posted June 22, 2005 Author Posted June 22, 2005 Way ahead of you. I called him and informed him about the mistakes in that article. What makes this article even sadder is if you listen to his voice. Click "AUDIO: Experience the Hurricane for yourself. Listen to narration of John Tanasychuk's story." Sad, sad, sad.
Token Yankee Guy Posted June 22, 2005 Posted June 22, 2005 Up, up, up, 100 feet. They call this the lift hill. From: http://www.sun-sentinel.com/features/lifestyle/sfl-licoasterjun21,0,4577655.story Hahahahaha. This article is so dumb.
Twister II Posted June 22, 2005 Posted June 22, 2005 Have you ever thought about the fact that the writer isn't a coaster freak like you? 1. It's not the tallest coaster in Florida. And its the tallest wooden coaster in Florida. 2. The lap bar doesn't come down, you pull it down. Maybe the ops put them down! 3. "Round" implies that there's a helix, which there isn't. This probly implies this pix: http://rcdb.com/ig622.htm?picture=7 4. I didn't realize that a wooden coaster could have a corkscrew. intr. & tr.v. cork·screwed, cork·screw·ing, cork·screws To move or cause to move in a spiral or winding course. 5. The coaster is a minute and ten seconds. That's not two minutes. Restraint check, ride, breaks, back into station, unlock restraints, probly about 2 mins.
Sir Clinksalot Posted June 22, 2005 Posted June 22, 2005 Whether the writer is a "roller coaster freak" or not, most journalists have this thing called "fact-checking" which they oughta try before they make even the most innocent fluff piece (which is all this is) a complete waste. The article's title is "Shake, rattle and roll: Get your thrills on Florida's tallest roller coaster" They don't make a differentiation between wooden and steel. Therefore, the headline contains a blatant untruth. While it may be the tallest wooden coaster in Florida (there's competition?), that's not what the headline of the article states. That's just flat out BAD reporting. You can defend it with "well maybe he meant this" arguments all day long, but it doesn't change anything. The more you have to explain the article, the worse the writing of it becomes. //oh, and writing the article in present tense warrants additional point loss
Nemmy Posted June 22, 2005 Author Posted June 22, 2005 2. The lap bar doesn't come down, you pull it down. Maybe the ops put them down! . They don't. 5. The coaster is a minute and ten seconds. That's not two minutes. Restraint check, ride, breaks, back into station, unlock restraints, probly about 2 mins. He says "two minutes of pure joy". I didn't realize that the brake run is pure joy. Or the restraint check. Even if it was, the ride is still 1:10, including the brake run. Everyone runs to get back on, and the restraints pop up immediately, so that's about one second. With the restraint check, that'd make it 1:30, still not close enough to 2 minutes.
DenDen Posted June 22, 2005 Posted June 22, 2005 Being that he used the word "dude" in his article, I'd say he's fresh out of school, slow news day, and/or daddy got him a job there. The article is cheesy, poorly written, even for non-coaster enthusiasts. The only people this article will appeal to are the retirees in Hallendale Beach who are in their 80's, and the 12 year olds featured in the article. OMFG! I just heard the audio! ROTFLMAO! He's gotta live in Wilton Manors. LOL
Nemmy Posted June 22, 2005 Author Posted June 22, 2005 Due to the fact that he also used "butt", he's probably trying to fit in with the kids. I'd say he's about 45 years old and is writing here because he did chief editor.
Space Freak Posted June 23, 2005 Posted June 23, 2005 They don't make a differentiation between wooden and steel. Therefore, the headline contains a blatant untruth. While it may be the tallest wooden coaster in Florida (there's competition?), that's not what the headline of the article states. Wow, I saw that and thought mathematical derivatives. Hmmm. Differentiation. Its been a long time... Rob Even if the article was bad, I still liked it. It made me want to go on a coaster.
BiCoastal Kid Posted June 23, 2005 Posted June 23, 2005 I don't know what is worse... the article, or people bothering to point out stupid mistakes in it regarding coasters.
Mind Eraser Posted June 24, 2005 Posted June 24, 2005 People correcting the mistakes is far more laughable. Same goes for the enthusiasts who jump into other people's conversations, and correct them about stats. Hahah. -kip-
