Sir Clinksalot
Yeah, I tried to post our USH pics from yesterday 4 times today. Still haven't been able to, well mostly because I'm at work.
Homer
What was the reason behind TPR being disabled? Is the whole server lag thing the reason why?
coaster1
I'm seeing huge slowdowns today .. but normally I see some lag (10-15sec) but today it's taking 30-45secs to refresh or load a page. Whatever the shutdown was, seems like SQL and PHP are having a tough time restarting.
robbalvey
Is anyone seeing lag on the fourms today? Basically if it takes longer than 4-5 seconds from when to click to when a page loads, that's too long IMO. I am doing some work on researching webhosts that are better for forums now, and worst case scenario I might go back to Lypha. As much as I did not like their customer service and the fact that their server crashed TWICE, at least the forums ran faster. Anyone know of a good webhost that you reccomend? --Robb
Sir Clinksalot
^ Yeah, it's still taking 15-20 seconds for me today.
memphish
I'm averaging 5 seconds on replys. About 20 to browse threads. I just got a basic package with dreamhost.com. They have really cheap hosting (I got 3 domains, 600 e-mail, 75 ftp, 2.4gb of space, and 120gb transfer per month. This package costs $8 a month if you prepay for two years. If you signup with the promo code "777" they give you the entire first year for $8.) I got 2 years of hosting for around $104. They have other plans with much larger space obviously. I haven't gotten my sites up yet, but I did a test file of 40mb and averaged 570K/sec on my 6mbit home line. I don't think they have phone support though, so it might not be a good solution for you. Token Yankee Guy
sometimes, technology can be a b*tch. What is the difference between a memory stick and a memory stick pro? I bought a MS for my DV cam and it turns out the camcorder doesn't accept pro's. So I gotta return it to Best Buy in two days since I can't do it tomorrow since I bought it for NYC tomorrow! Looks like I'll have to bring my digi cam monster with me and the DV cam down to the city.
DenDen
When I get back from Europe I am going to fix all this. Sorry about the trouble. I am convinced there is no good webhosts in the world! --Robb Slow for me, from 10-30 seconds for page views. For instant gratification, you need a dedicated host. (Or, do a homebrew!) But if you don't have the budget for that, go with a higher-priced host, not a discounter! Yahoo/Inktomi doesn't cut it. Higher priced hosts have less websites, and less experienced webmasters that don't require processor time.
robbalvey
Ok everyone. Action is being taken! I am currently doing some tests with a version of the forum on another host and things seem to be working MUCH better! The goal is to have the forum up and running on the new, faster server by sometime next week. Thanks for your patience! --Robb
DenDen
Thanks for your patience! --Robb We should be thanking you for running "da bomb". Though you may know this stuff already, here's a couple tips I've learned for speeding scripts up a bit... (I run a perl-based portal, but the theory is the same) Avatars: Allowing users to hotlink avatars can slow down display time. If a user's avatar is huge, or on a slow server, sometimes the browser won't display your page until it finds, loads, or errors-out the avatar. It's more a browser-flaw, than anything, and being these scripts use lots of tables, the slow-downs are very common. And if the user is blocking "third-party images" with firefox, then it looks like a lot of people don't have avatars. Calendar: The script has to "think" every time the calendar is displayed. Displaying it only on a single page improves performance. Who's Online: This is another "thinking" processes that should be avoided. Putting a "who's online" option in a link to display who's on is much better than doing it on every page. Just a couple tips.
